U.S. Raids L.A. Marijuana Shops

Officials send warning letters to property owners and operators of an additional 67 dispensaries, giving them two weeks to comply with federal law.

Los Angeles Times: Federal officials brought their war on medical marijuana dispensaries to Los Angeles on Tuesday, raiding several shops and issuing warning letters to dozens more.

Officials at the U.S. attorney's office said it was the first large-scale federal action taken against cannabis shops in the city, and said more will probably follow. "We couldn't do all of L.A. at once," said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the office. "There's just too many stores."

The crackdown adds a dramatic element to the already tense fight over the fate of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. And it underscores the stern stance of the federal government that the sale and distribution of cannabis is illegal, no matter what cities do to try to regulate the industry.

Over the last year, federal authorities have targeted pot businesses across California, including a high-profile raid at a marijuana trade school in Oakland, where proceeds on medical marijuana are taxed.

State laws trump Federal laws

Everyone in this country needs to READ THE CONSTITUTION! The federal government does these raids because NO ONE QUESTIONS THEM! States' rights trump Federal Law. If the Federal government said there was a "War against swimming in the ocesn" would L.A. allow them to raid the beaches? When the people of a state vote to legalize medical marijuana then the Feds can't come in years after it was legalized in a sovereign state and do raids. The issue should have been addressed in the courts immediately after the law was passed if it was an issue. Don't these dispenseries pay taxes to the state and federal government for profits? Don't they pay salaries for the employees who pay SS, Medicare, Federal, state taxes etc??

Has the state and federal government taken the taxes and fees collected from these businesses and spent them? I don't get this garbage any more, I'm not an attorney but it appears to me that the states should be taking a stand against the federal government and protecting their, businesses and citizens. If they are doing illegal activities then they need to go after the city's licensing policies, the sales tax, property tax etc that these dispenseries pay. What about the doctors that give prescriptions to the citizens in the state that use these medical dispensaries, shouldn't they go to prison if they are illegally giving out prescriptions?? This is one big fat joke with the federal government doing these raids on medical marijuana and dispensaries AND even with the Raw Milk co-op's. It's about money and CONTROL, period and the states had better start standing up for their businesses and citizens.

It's like a father watching his child ride his bike on the driveway every day for two weeks and then smacking him for doing it and then allowing him to do it again for another two weeks. Either he CAN or he CAN'T ride the bike in the driveway. They won't put it in the courts because the Feds know they would lose.

The problem is, when you get

The problem is, when you get into 'Federal' court, the 'Federal' judge will tell you what your 'State' laws mean to the Feds, (not much, if anything).

It wasn't always this way, the turning point came in 1913 when the 17th amendment to the Constitution was ratified (? highly contested). That's when the state governments lost their suffrage and ANY power they had over the Feds...

This is indeed true

but don't forget, the Fed is holding money over their heads to surpass the laws. The Feds win by the endless money they dump to the states. You don't listen to the Feds, you don't get the money. It is a tug of war between the Feds and the dispensaries, who ever produces the most money for the state will win.

Sad, these business owners are having their lives completely ruined, just for trying to offer people a natural choice in medicine.

At least Big-Pharma is getting their money's worth out of their bought and paid for scumbag politicians.

What to do when tyranny is knocking

I hope it doesn't happen, but wide scale riots against police is inevitable.

Clearly the only weed the US government wants people to smoke

Is the stuff smuggled in from south of the border by their sponsored cartel of choice, run by ex-Mexican Army elites who had no problem breaking off from their previous underworld employers after being armed to the teeth with US weapons to eliminate their own rivals in efforts to ensure that the US government will have a strong, long-lasting business partner in the failed yet exorbitantly expensive and equally lucrative War on Drugs.

Its A States Rights issue

and California needs to step up to big brother and tell them to go fuck themselves cause they have no right to tell a state what they can and can't do. They let Alcohol and Tobacco two things that can kill you be legal but yet a medicinal herb that has many uses medicinal included is illegal, it amazes me the type of people that we have in office

yep

this is mostly a cali phenomenon, in cali they (local thugs) invite the feds in to bust the mmj dispensarys. in Colorado the locals (gov) tell the feds to get lost. i haven't heard of one raid in co where the disp was following state law. we have 1000's of disp.
