Tom Mullen: A Skeptic's Case for Gary Johnson

Washington Times - TAMPA, September 26, 2012 – You may be an independent that finds the major party candidates for president particularly weak this year. You may be an “Old Right” conservative that can’t bring yourself to vote for Mitt Romney. You may be a died-in-the-wool liberal who thinks Barack Obama’s presidency has been just a little too similar to Dubya’s.

Or, you may be a libertarian.

If you belong to any of those groups, you might be considering voting for Gary Johnson. Ironically, if you are a libertarian, you may need the most convincing.

Gary Johnson isn’t well-grounded in libertarian theory and it results in him taking some positions that libertarians don’t like. I made the argument myself that Johnson is not really a libertarian at all. In two subsequent interviews (here and here), Johnson didn’t allay those concerns.

Regardless, Gary Johnson is the best choice for president this year for voters from all over the political spectrum.

Gary has my vote.

Specifics are not important. When LP is in the Major league and Electoral College is populated with our delegates, we can select a better leader and refine the policies.

Today, only LP stands for capitalism. Growing LP to the point that people start sending LP congressmen and LP senators to Wash DC is the main objective.

Please Answer Me This

Given our intention to take control of the GOP, do we or do we not want the LP to get the matching funds that it would earn if Governor Johnson reaches the 5% threshold?

To me, this is the pressing question. I like the idea of the LP getting matching funds, but then I wonder if we might not want to empower the LP when we are trying to take control of a competing party.

We need the LP as a safety valve

that we turn on whenever the Republican establishment rejects our candidates.

Don't worry.

Gary Johnson, nor any other third party candidate will never get even 3%.

That's where you're wrong

That's where you're wrong Trixie Dixie. Well, come to think of it, you're right, considering your grammar. We will indeed garnish 3% or more. Ever, not "never".

Sorry, I'm not buying what

Sorry, I'm not buying what Johnson is selling...

Military intervention, because of "genocide" and Kony 2012 junk. What BS... No... I will NOT be voting for neocon warmonger lite, Gary Johnson. I'll be writing-in Ron Paul.

And unlike Ron Paul, Johnson does not run a fiscally sound campaign...

I would hope Johnson wouldn't run the country like he does his campaign i.e. in the red.

"I would hope Johnson

"I would hope Johnson wouldn't run the country like he does his campaign i.e. in the red."

It would probably be more like how he ran the state of New Mexico.

bump for peace

The only peace presidential candidate with a chance to win is Gary Johnson.

Vote for peace.

If only...

... Gary had the same respect for the unalienable right of Life for all human beings that Dr. Paul has, I could stop thinking of him as the least of three evils and instead vote for him.

What's that? Leaving it for

What's that? Leaving it for the states to decide?

Well...

...according to Dr. Paul's address at the South Carolina Pro-Life Forum this past January, he views sending it back to the states as an interim step that will save many lives while the federal amendment goal is still a good one, just hard to achieve. I'm fully with Dr. Paul on this.

You have to understand that this isn't just about the logistics of sending it back to the states; it's also about the character of the man and how his outlook on the value of ALL human life informs his worldview and decisionmaking as a whole.

It's kind of like asking me to vote for someone who wants to end the wars, end the Fed ... but, oh, he happens to be pro-choice on infanticide for a few months after birth. But don't worry, he's for letting states decide. You might not equate the killing of the unborn a few months before birth with the killing of the born three months after birth; and my goal isn't to convince you of that in this thread. The point is that I DO equate these things, so you can see how voting for someone who is ok with it would grate against my conscience.

Micah..Listen to this ..

It is a lecture Ayn Rand gave at Ford Hall Forum

It has to do with attitude of the Church towards sex

No Man's need constitutes an obligation on the part of another man to fulfill that need.

Didn't see links for the audio...

... but I've read Ayn Rand's thoughts in this regard, and I find her disregard for unborn human beings sad and frightening. 'All men are created equal...' -- the unalienable right of Life is inherent with every human being from the moment they are created.

I am certainly glad my great-grandmother, whoever she was, didn't share Ayn Rand's disdain for the unwanted unborn. Because she gave her unwanted baby up for adoption, my grandmother, my father, myself and my son are alive today.

If only Ayn had shared, if only Gary did share Dr. Paul's respect for ALL human life...

Sounds familiar...

He has no chance, you say. Where have I heard that before? Let's get real. A good showing by Johnson is an advance for the liberty cause, whatever his flaws may be. Local elections are important but so is the national election because of the greater visibility to the general public.

Johnson has my vote

I'd vote for Obama before I voted for a sociopath like Romney... Thankfully, I have the option of voting Johnson in my state.

Linda Cross's picture

The chosen one will win,

no matter who you vote for. But, wouldn't it be nice to take as many votes away from both Romney and Obama as possible? It should be easy, most voters dislike both candidates. There is a choice on the ticket in all 50 states who is neither Obama nor Romney. It's time to vote NEITHER.

If you see something, say something, the government is listening.
Silence isn't golden, it's yellow.

The first step

The first step to winning is admitting that we have the power to change the course of history.

Great news from Ohio

Latest poll has GJ at 10.6% (was 4.5%)

If Romney and Obama campaign

If Romney and Obama campaign long enough maybe they will raise that number more yet :)

LOL good point

Obama and Romney attacking each other seems to be working for Gary Johnson -- they destroy each other and there is no dirt thrown at GJ.

How come an article about Gitmo Gary is on the front page,

but not other more important things like Justin Amash's money bomb these past few days? For example:
http://www.dailypaul.com/256345/win-a-dinner-with-ron-paul-a...
http://www.dailypaul.com/256070/justin-amash-moneybomb-is-on...

The moneybomb is way more important IMO. We NEED to make sure Amash stays in the House. He is the best representative there other than Dr. Paul himself. The presidential race is a joke. Johnson has no chance so there is no point to focus on it. Right now we should put our energy into electing and reelecting more local candidates.

“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till." -J.R.R. Tolkien

Well, how much chance did Dr.

Well, how much chance did Dr. Paul really have? It did not stop us from working hard for it anyway and we came close to getting a nomination. The next president is probably already decided anyway, but why not make it harder for them. It will open people's eyes even further. If Johnson gets into the debates - more people will wake up. Other countries know what is going on - let's wake up more Americans! Who know's what might happen! Gary Johnson may not close Gitmo - but it's just a location - he is against torture and for civil liberties.

Look, I agree that there are things we need to do to keep pushing Liberty candidates, however, I believe it is important to push for Gary Johnson at this point. He is on the ballot in 47 states, he is fighting for three more and I believe he will succeed. A lot of people said Ron Paul would never win, but we kept pushing on, and of course, the establishment kept him from the win. If not Gary, who do you propose we fight for at this point? Romney? Obama? A candidate that will not be on the ballot in enough states to have a chance? I considered writing in Ron Paul, but at this point I believe he would rather see us vote for Johnson, with what he said about him. "Gary Johnson is wonderful." - Ron Paul
With that said, saying Johnson has no chance is throwing in the towel on the Presidential election, and I believe we need to send a clear message to both parties from their blatant disrespect of the peoples voice in both conventions, so, let us try to get behind someone, and let us continue to fight for Liberty candidates everywhere. I would like to see suggestions on other candidates and where they stand with ballot access. Virgil Goode is on the ballot in 26 with a possibility of write-in in 7 states.

i like this article

but you have a point. Justin's MOney bomb's should be on the front page.
