How a Romney Loss Would Impact the GOP

National Journal: Today, the media and their pollsters are to blame for Mitt Romney's political troubles, according to Romney's fans. But if Romney does lose this year, blame will quickly shift to the Republican presidential nominee himself, his shortcomings, and his ability to articulate a conservative vision for the country. And the fallout from a Romney loss has the potential to reverberate through the Republican Party for a decade.

Had you told any Democratic political strategist a year ago that the unemployment rate in September 2012 would stand at 8.1 percent, he or she would have thrown up their hands in despair. President Obama, conventional wisdom held, would be headed to certain defeat.

But six weeks from Election Day, the picture is very different. Obama's approval ratings are on the rise, positive economic news hints at a recovery in the housing market and a slightly brighter jobs picture, and state-by-state polling shows Obama ahead of Republican nominee Mitt Romney in virtually every battleground state by significant margins. Even the dreaded enthusiasm gap, which showed Republican voters more likely to head to the polls than Democrats this year, is fading as more Democrats tune in.

Continue at National Journal - this snip appears later in the column:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the picture of the Republican establishment, has hired Rep. Ron Paul's campaign manager — one of the party's best field operatives, to be sure, but one who brings tea party credibility to a candidate clearly worried about his right flank in the meantime.

Benton has credentials?

Since when?

Nepotism isn't a credential, it's a free ride. I'm sorry Ron Paul chose to engage in it.

I wish Dr. Paul bought Jesse a house or a car, instead he gives him a half million dollars of our money to work for the Romney campaign.

I don't know what you guys been smokin

After the election I anticipate Martial Law. There may not even be an election in november. There is little chance of an election in 2016 any different than the one in Russia. We are heading for Communism folks.

I've consistently stated that

I've consistently stated that after the general election of 2012, Americans have a choice of WW3 or civil war... The choices aren't pretty, but they surely ARE by design.

Do you think Rommey would be any better?

If the RNC in Tampa proved anything, it confirmed that Romney is a malicious and petty person, who does not tolerate any type of disagreement or dissent from his word.

I think a Romney win, would justify his actions in his mind and he and Ryan would do everything in their power to crush our movement and bring about martial law, all for the "safety" of the nation...

Romney is a terrible human being and disgrace to everything this country was built on.

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

When Robmey loses

it will be hard for some. But is anything really different? No. Obombya is just continuing the Bush advisor's policies, and he will continue with their agenda, just as Robmey would do. Until someone is able to break this cycle of evil leaders, it will be bad for the U.S. and the world.

Nearly everything about this article annoys me

Forgive me for my upcoming rant, but I know this is one of the few places where people are intelligent enough to understand my points and to feel similarly.

I am growing absolutely sick and tired of the media consistently LYING to us about everything. I am only 22, and growing up you are told all the time how the media is suspect and to question things. However, it has gotten to a point of such blatant dishonesty that I cannot sit through 5-6 minutes of a CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews broadcast without becoming visibly upset.

REAL unemployment is 22% when factoring in U-6 and long-term discouraged workers (those out of work for over a year), REAL inflation is 9% when utilizing the old SGS Alternate CPI of 1980 (before they deceptively changed the basket of goods to help reduce benefit payouts to retirees in the 1990s). We now have the Fed enacting QE3 where banks will have such an UNIMAGINABLE amount of excess reserves ($1.5-2 trillion). What the heck do these people think will happen when rates go the other way, or the Fed raises reserve requirements and these excess reserves enter the general economy? DISASTER!

Then on foreign policy, I literally want to throw a SHOE at my TV when I hear how these media talking heads are CONVINCED that hundreds of thousands of protestors are so sensitive and stupid that they are upset over a YouTube trailer from 3 months ago! These people are tired of unending occupation, and they haven't forgotten the gas canisters during Arab Spring in Egypt that read "Made in the USA".

What will happen if Romney loses? I disagree with this baloney article, I think it will be fantastic for not only the Liberty movement but for America in the LONG RUN. Because when the real crash comes in 2013-2014, instead of capitalism getting blamed in a Romney administration (even though he isn't really capitalist, but thats the perception), then Obama will receive the backlash and we may finally witness the true DEATH of Vulgar Keynesianism.

I am sorry I got so heated, but I knew you all would understand and let me vent so there haha

Unemployment might be that In NYC,LA, & SF,but not in Midwest

I have 3 roommates. They and myself are all employed. I have a house elsewhere where I rent to 3 others. One is retired, and the other 2 are working. My ex-husband has 5 people at his house. He is retired, one is disabled, two of the men are working. The two women in the house really do not want to work and their dad supports them, but they do odd jobs, babysitting and other. The two are basically lazy. They hardly ever clean their dads house or even do mowing. You should see the restaurants out here, if the food is good they are full.

With all due respect

You are talking about a handful of people you know personally, or through some extension. In which case good for you, I'm happy for you that you and your friends are so fortunate. However, painting some brush over the entire country based on the employment of the 6 or 7 or whatever people in your post does not change the fact of where our country lies.

I never said that consumption is down, with interest rates kept low as long as they have been it should be no shock at all that people continue to borrow and consume. One of the biggest flaws of Vulgar Keynesianism is the belief that all the interest rate is necessary for is calculating the rate at which consumers borrow and spend, apparently it has nothing to do with saving, or various types of investment on the production side, etc.

I can assure you, respectfully, the restaurants here in Manhattan are quite full as well (much more full than your restaurants, I'd wager), but consumption is not an indication of economic growth or prosperity. Consumption is nice, but it cannot stimulate an economy on its own and high volumes of it certainly is not productive when in the current situation where are in.

Red states do have generally better unemployment rates, thanks to better fiscal policy by their state governments, but it doesn't change the economic facts of where our country is today.

I couldn't agree more

The train is going over the bridge. All we get to do is choose who is the engineer when it does (assuming the elections aren't rigged outright). I would rather a Liberal Dem get the blame than a "conservative Republican". Plus if Romney can't beat Obama, who has absolutely no business being in charge of a taco stand let alone the U.S. then it should shake the party to the core and we might be able to slip in...otherwise screw em.

What about the idea that they've chosen the loss?

What if they already decided to lose this race and they needed the rule changes to keep us away in 2016?

Then what's next? Go to LP or what?

It's something we need to look at and come up with a solution!

More disillusionment and

More disillusionment and confusion resulting from a Republican presidential loss only makes it easier for those folks who are trying to gain control within the Party, imo.

“Wasting a vote is sometimes voting for somebody that you don't really believe in."

Screw the GOP establishment

That is my take.

How would it impact the GOP?

Who cares?

The Constitution Party.
The Libertarian Party.

Brother Winston Smith

The r3VOLution is NOT republiCAN.

And it will certainly pave the way

for a RON PAUL WIN IN 2016!!!!!!
We all heard him on Leno. This man is a MASTER at biding his time.
What's the saying? First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they throw all your delegates out of the convention, then you win the Presidency!
Ron Paul has repeatedly said he will not hide himself away and he is no way ready to retire from public life.
I think the sheeple NEED another 4 years of BO to wake 'em up.

Hopefully when Mitt looses,

Hopefully when Mitt looses, the RATpubliCONs will fall with him.

Here is what WE need to do!

Here is what WE need to do! When Mitt Romney loses, WE need to constantly harp every where we can that the RNC has given us two failed runs in a row by pushing mushy moderates down our throats! And WE Republicans need a total turn over in leadership! All of those in positions of power in the Republican party (i.e. those that fought against Ron Paul and us) MUST BE FIRED! It will be very easy for us to turn the Republican base against the establishment and use this 2nd loss to unseat the powers that be. When this happens, WE, Paul supporters step in to fill the vacuum! This will become very important in 2016 when Republicans are narrowing down the primary challengers! We need to be in a position to push back if and when those few remaining NeoCons push against Rand Paul in favor of Paul Ryan or Lindsay Graham or some other RINO!

I Agree 100% Vote 3rd Party but stay GOP

This way we can rebuild the GOP out of the ashes of the Neocon purge that will occur.

GOP 2.0 - The upgrade is coming...

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Gop 2.0 - The upgrade is coming

Absolutely ... Gary Johnson for president, liberty candidates all the way down the page regardless of party, intense political engagement through the GOP here on out.

Rights belong to individuals, not groups; they derive from our nature and can neither be granted nor taken away by government. Ron Paul

Where's Granger?

This is where you step in!! Do yo thang!
In NC we will be attending the conventions not just election year but every year .. bringing new and young recruits, making changes in positions, building connections, EDUCATING everyone on a principled, un-hypocrytical stance to small government.

Yes...this is why we stay

Yes...this is why we stay republican! Because we will pick up the pieces from a failed system and rebuild it our way...the way our founders wanted it to be!

It is time we take a look at

It is time we take a look at our goal for the future and make the changes necessary to win the election in 2016. Can we take over the Republican Party at the local and State level and have a shot at taking over at the National level? Have we made enough progress in that direction to stay the course? Or, should we throw our support to a third party and forget about the GOP? I am droping out of the Republican Party so the answer is very clear to me.

As much as I detest the GOP right now, I say stay the course.

In 2008, we carried Nevada. Now we have 5 to 7 states (even if most were not officially counted). At that rate, taking over the GOP is very possible in 2016.

Why start over again from square one when we're the ones with the real momentum?

Not even a mention of the Liberty Movement in that article.

The current schism in the GOP is not about conservative vs. moderate, but freedom vs. tyranny.

I'm sure the old guard would love to see Santorum take the Republican helm in 2016. Bah!

Exactly, we must defeat

Exactly, we must defeat neo-conservatism, then theo-conservatism.

We have to fight my mom!

She's the Hucklebee in 2008 and Santorum in 2012 type.. but like another comment said it's about freedom vs. tyranny. Fighting the church's that desire power and influence in politics. Don't get me wrong though, I am a Christian I just don't believe you can regulate morality, so I believe in liberty.

Its mitts to lose

I think mitt wants to purposely lose to Obama. He's not a conservative you know that I know that and the tea party knows that Paul 16
