75 Year Old Veteran wearing USAF ball cap commented on my RP T-Shirt in Grocery Store

I live in an area of Florida that is completely surrounded by the MIC. I read somewhere that over 70% of our local economy is supported by Active Duty Troops, Civilans working on base, Government Contractors, and Retired Military receiving their benefits from Uncle Sam.

Even though I know the statistics about Active Duty Troops overwhelmingly supporting Ron Paul, most of the time when I get into a conversation with someone in uniform they generally don't seem to care one way or the other about politics...at least not outwardly or publically. However, when I do find members of the military that are stong supporters of RP's message, they are almost always young people.

I just went to the grocery store wearing one of my new RP T-Shirts (that a DP member got me when she went to Tampa) and while I was walking down the isle with my wife a man walking toward us that had to be at least 75 years old, wearing a USAF ball cap that had lots of pins on it, stepped right in front of me and started poking on my chest where it said Ron Paul. I have to say my first thought was that he was going to call RP a kook and that being a pacifist with all the "terrorism" in the world was naive....But much to my pleasure as he was poking my chest, he said "Ron Paul huh?...THAT man should be our president!"

My wife and I just smiled, shook his hand, and I tapped the bill of his hat and said "I really love it when people your age who have served in the armed forces say things like that to me...waking up for young people is unsettling at best and very few people I have met from your generation seem to want to know the truth"

He replied "there are a lot more retired people like me that have figured out what's going on than you think...but we learned too late...it's you and your kids generation who are going to have to save this country" I told him I was doing my best.

Made my day! Spontaneous encounters with Ron Paul supporters ALWAYS make my day!

Just so you know, it's because people serving active duty are not allowed to do much with politics. And that is really how it should be. We don't want the military involved in politics at all, that's best. A bumper sticker, a sign in the yard, and that's about all active duty military can get away with. I know this from personal experience. That's all I will say! :)

It did my heart good to hear of your fine experience and the hope stated by that 75 year old vet. Thank you for sharing!

For decades it was almost impossible to hear Ron Paul's message

I just heard a small part of it until the last several years, because the only time you MIGHT get to hear Ron Paul was at 3:00 am in the morning on CSPAN, and not everyone even had cable.

I started following Ron Paul in the late 1980's, but still it was impossible to actually hear what he had to say, I was inspired by his libertarian actions and, of course, his votes. For those that bothered to pay attention to the house votes, we would wonder "who is that one vote?"

The first thing out of my mouth when I came home from work the day of the Fox debates when they were showing Ron Paul's run in with Giuliani, the first words out of my mouth were "They let Ron Paul on television, during the day?" I never saw him on TV during the day before.

Didn't watch much TV

Or look into anything of consequence until after 9/11. Still don't watch much TV. I was your average eyes wide shut "Go republican" sheeple. So I did not ever hear of Ron Paul until 2006/2007. Such a long journey, sprinkled with a little denial.
Don't remember much about the first time I learned of him, but I remember thinking he was a small island of sanity in a much bigger sea of insanity, after listening to him. Finally got my wife truly on board with him during the NH Primary, that was fun :P Now she, like me, is a diehard Ron Paul supporter.
So now I put plugs in for him where I can about some of his ideals. I hate seeing unanswered and blatantly false criticism of him...

There is no one generation to

There is no one generation to blame. Young voters were all over Obama last time around.

We may have increased our numbers tenfold since 2008, but we still have an uphill battle in the War of Information. As young people, don't forget that most of our peers, and that's in any generation, are still statists.

I am a member of the American Legion, We have three Posts within a five mile radius. One is the Pat Tillman post.

We/They all know who Ron Paul is and they continue to support him and the message of Liberty.

Active duty and retired, we are everywhere. : )

My 93 year old..

uncle who is a WWII vet, and his wife support Ron.

"but we learned too late"

"It's you and your kids generation who are going to have to save this country"

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Ive talked to many old timers

about the issues and both my grandfathers served in WWII and i can assure you that they are not the problem! Its their kids, the Boomers that have been the problem and for the most part remain the problem! If it were not for them i could hate Obamacare much more than i do but the last thing we need is heroic healthcare to keep them alive until they are 120 years old. This is one area where Obama may have got it right.... ;)

can't believe anyone voted

can't believe anyone voted this comment up. Obama has got NOTHING right. Also it's not the boomers. Most of the nanny state crap came from the ww1 and ww 2 generations. they , the boomers were the ones who went on the dole and get get out.. welfare etc. It was Roosevelt who got us really rolling down the socialist path. Not the boomers.

What Do You Mean By "Heroic Healthcare?"

"Bipartisan: both parties acting in concert to put both of their hands in your pocket."-Rothbard

Conservative Warrior...I'm not quite a baby boomer but

for the most part I agree that it's my generation in which everything has really gotten out of control but the reasons why that happened are not so cut and dry.

We I first figured out what was going on, I grilled my Dad (who is 74) and asked him why the heck his generation allowed the Government too get so big? Why didn't he tell me about the Federal Reserve System, etc.? IMHO the awakening is a direct result of the availablity of information on the internet. I'm almost 50 but easy access to the TRUTH really did not become standard in everyones home until the late 90's. Broadband internet access along with vast public and private information websites IMHO is the key.

So, I give anyone older than 60 a pass because they just did not have such convenient access to books, videos, and podcasts. We don't have to go to the library and checkout a book on the Federal Reserve System since there are bunches of ways to educate yourself online...on your own schedule. The library of congress is online. Presidental Executive Orders are online, etc.

I hated schuel and if were not for the internet I would not know all I know today. I wouldn't have taken the time to go hunt down information at a library or bookstore. I would not have sent off for public records, etc.

My generation is the first that I feel should be held somewhat accountable for letting the country go to hell, but even we deserve a little compassion.

I was born in the early 60's and during my youth TV's became so inexpensive that we all had one in our room. I had no idea that I was being brainwashed with propaganda. What I learned about history, American Government, and Civics in highscheul has turned out to be far from the truth. I went to college and got a bachelors degree but I didn't really learn much. I just wanted the diploma and to party.

My primary goal in life now is to do whatever I can to help restore freedom and liberty to America so that my daughter and future generations won't be debt slaves and live in a totalitarian police state.

So, right now I think blaming any age group is not really fair. BUT, there is NO EXCUSE for anyone under the age of 50 to remain ignorant of the reality in which we live.

As far as Obamacare...it's nothing more than another program that increases the power of the State and provides another way for Big Pharma, the medical monopoly, and politically connected people to raid the public purse.

I agree

I think the Internet is what is making the difference here. I ended up a Ron Paul supporter instead of a neocon because Glenn Beck did a show once on Friedrich Hayek and I did an Internet search on him and found myself on the Mises Institute's website. Without the Internet...I'd still be a neocon.

That said, at least half of the people who've commented positively on my Ron Paul gear have been 50+. I don't think it's as rare as most people think it is.

The Young People Are Catching On And Made Ron Paul

succesful this primary season. I attended a Springfield, VA rally, hosted by George Mason chapter I believe, and the audience was a majority of young people. I just hit 40 and felt sorat out of place at the rally, but there were people of wide range of age. If the Socialists are to be defeated, it will be through the energy and determination of the youth who are truely fiscal conservatives and liberty-lovers. I just can't tell who which side has the most support and money. The GOP better grab that RP energy and enthusiasm or it will be in the dark for a long time in my opinion and we will end up like Europe or Russia or part of some NWO.

to add to that

this is what it all boils down to. You can tell a lot about the Boomer generation by the Politicians it produced and have kept in power under their rule . If you look at George Bush, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Mitt Romney, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John Boehner, Newt Gingrich, Janet Napolitano etc, etc, etc, etc etc etc all the way down the chain of command for the last 3 decades they all have 4 things in common:
1 The current conditions
2 They are totally out of control
3. They are ALL Baby Boomers
4. You cant get rid of them! they just keep coming back like a bad dream over and over and over... I rest my case.....:)

Excuses are like assholes

everybody has one. Fact is their parents handed them the most prosperous country the world had ever known and they took over, outsourced it( or turned a blind eye to it) to collect the proffits and ran it in to the ground and for the most part still vote accordingly and are in the tank for bigger and bigger government if you look at the age brackets and who they vote for along with who's been at the helm for the last 25 years or so.
All this legislation coming down on us brought to you by GUESS WHO...Boomers...not grandpa ! They have internet just like the rest of us so wtf is their problem? I agree with you to a certain extent but they are out of excuses! They know the issues just like everybody else, they ( for the most part) just dont give a chit, its that simple and the numbers prove it!

As I stated below

Most boomers do not want to know the truth. It will upset their world view. I've had conversations with many people @ my age (49) and several have litterally come out and said "I'd rather not know the truth...it will only get me depressed and there is nothing I can do change the way the world works"

I do not agree that there is nothing we can do but I do believe the process of awaking, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor." (Just kidding here...that passage just popped into my head when I was typing and I thought it was funny)

I have similar experiences at work

Someone said they would rather live a lie than know the truth.

May the LORD bless you and keep you
May the LORD make His face shed light upon you and be gracious unto you
May the LORD lift up His face unto you and give you peace

You guys are on to something here

your just confused as to why they would rather believe the lie is all.....

The only thing

that will wake that generation up is when they have lost everything and have burned their kids and grand kids furniture to the ground ...
If there ever was a true "me" generation it is the Boomer generation...they legislated as if they are the last generation on earth. Just look at the unfunded liabilities for them and the wealth they accumulated from the outsourcing of America. Its all about THEM isn't it ? Sure seems that way....

You're blaming the people for the money that the Government

stole from them. My Dad worked his entire life. He paid into social security, paid payroll taxes, withholding, etc. The Government lied to the people back then and told them they were keeping their SS in an account and it would be available to them when they retired.

I was born in 1963. I knew by the time I was 15 that there was no way there would be any money left for me when I would be retiring but I still have to pay into the ponzi scheme to this day.

The boomers certainly are due their fair share of criticism but most (I believe) trusted Government in the 50's and 60's. Hell, I trusted Government until about 5 years ago..(not with money but as a general rule)

BTW-I'm not sticking up for the boomers...like I said, I'm not offically a boomer and I stopped communicating with my parents several years ago...I couldn't care less about them or any other boomers. I just try to put myself in their shoes and I'm pretty sure without the internet and without a thirst for the truth....I would have never known Government was a criminal institution.

The Government has been lying to people

for 100 years. I have to pay in to, the only difference is i pay because i have to, not because i trust them or ever expect to get it back. One thing has always been true and that is if the government gives you something, even something that is owed to you, they have to STEAL it from somebody else. Ive had this argument a million times and the fact is your right, their money was stolen from them SO NOW the boomers want to pick my pockets and my sons pockets and his sons pockets AND YOUR POCKETS to pay themselves back what they promised themselves through a corrupt government to the tune of 120 Trillion with a T over the next 20 years...AMAZING isn't it? So now you understand why they like the government ? I'll tell you what, Next time i make a bad investment and lose some money i'm gonna come by your house and you can pay me back what i lost so i can reinvest it back in to more corrupt government programs and promises...Sound Good ?

Probably one of the biggest

Probably one of the biggest lies in the liberty community is that older people are ignorant.

Forever Liberty...

No way do I think older people are ignorant...quite the opposite. What I have found however is that older people seriously do not want to know the truth. They sense something is wrong but if they go down the rabbit hole late in life...they think they will be depressed the rest of their life.

I was 47 when I "woke up" and it took me 6 months to start feeling normal again. It's not easy finding out you have been lied to all your life. It's not easy finding out the country that you have held up as a beacon of freedom and compassion turns out to be the biggest bully and terrorist on the planet. It's not easy finding out about the history of money and banking and The Fed. It's not easy breaking from family and friends that think you have lost your mind or gone crazy.

If learning the truth were easy and painless...I suspect more people would seek it out. What I wish is that more people would understand that once you find out the truth the readjustment period only takes about 6 months. And THEN something I never expected happens...a personal freedom and a stress free happiness like you have never experienced will follow.

I went down the rabbit hole first...then my wife...lastly my daughter. We have never been closer and we are all extremely happy. All this even though our income of roughly $125k a year has virtually disappeared.

Minimizing and getting off the hamster wheel has been the best gift I have ever given myself. And now I thirst for knowledge and the truth. I'm still amazed at what I find out sometimes but nothing much surprises me anymore.
