Will having a medical marijuana farm be profitable in the future?

I was wondering this, because I am thinking about putting my gold and silver savings into it one day.

Normally, anything plenty of

Normally, anything plenty of people would be willing to work at for little more than a couple of bong hits a day, will never be able to command much in the way of earnings.

But, if you are a real pot connoiseur, who can breed, grow and harvest better stuff than anyone else; or you happen to be able to pick up prime bud growing land, you may have a shot. Like those bastards :) who happen to sit on prime Cabernet Sauvignon growing plots in Napa Valley.

Seems like a big risk given federal attitudes

but on the other hand, it's to the point where pretty much EVERYTHING WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO DO TO SURVIVE IN COMING TIMES IS/WILL BE ILLEGAL.

So at a certain point, WHO CARES?

depends

Cannabis plant loves to grow in the sun, but if industrial hemp becomes legalized, medical grade grows will be forced indoors to prevent cross-pollinization.

IDK

if I would put all my eggs in that basket. As someone mentioned below, the states where it has been legalized are exporting to states where it has not, and are driving down prices. This is great for the consumer but not so good for the farmer. Especially with all the work and risk that goes into it.

It is MUCH more expensive to do it indoors than outdoors. There is simply no substitute for the sun. With that comes greater risk. Not only of being spotted by the authorities, but spider mites, deer, and a host of other critters can decimate an entire crop within weeks.

Also the typical mistakes of being a beginner and maybe cutting it too early, not flushing out the nutrients properly toward the end of its life cycle, or letting it mold while trying to cure it, can also turn a large investment of time and money into a big green pile of doo doo.

It's not as profitable as it used to be, but it sure would be fun. There aren't many plants that are as beautiful and aromatic as the cannabis plant. (so I'm told....8)

Jim Rogers (the investor) recently said that agriculture was a safe bet in the coming years, so who knows?

Put your gold into a decent piece of land

I doubt a marijuana farm would be more profitable than any other cash crop if it is legalized (supply will equal demand) but at least if the SHTF you already have a piece of land where you can raise some food. Last I checked you cannot eat gold. Better to put some of the gold money into land and tools to feed yourself and your loved ones.

On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.

Not if you smoke the profits

Of course - if/when medical mj becomes standard, the big farms will take it over, the government will make sure to regulate to no end... so small farmers likely won't even get a start.

Probably not...

Today it is harder and harder to profit on Medical farms...Over production and under consumption, in the USA, has caused a dramatic drop in price...And contrary to the lower post on this thread...Most Medical farms are not indoor grows...NorCal is absolutely full of outdoor grows and they are still turning a profit, but every year growers are less and less enchanted with the economic, and legal, environment...Now a small indoor op can create a nice income coupled with a low amount of work and may insure you of a nice lifestyle but I doubt you will get rich..A large outdoor crop on the contrary could get you a big payday and allow you to buy some gold to keep your wealth...It is a huge amount of work and of course you will be fighting the Federal government and their bullshit War on Drugs...And if you are caught you will do 5+ years...Where as 14 states and DC allow Medical Marijuana the Feds don't and I know many people doing tall time because of this...Not to mention that Obama lied through his teeth, when he said he would allow the states to have their right on this issue, he lied and is arresting more people than the douche bag Bush...If you are super interested in info on this subject...Feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer them...I am very well informed on the subject, and here where I live if you have a medical license you are allowed to grow whatever your prescription permits...No Feds and no police state and no private prisons....Etc...

1000+

Outdoor grow...Reward=2.25 million+...Risk=20 yrs in a Fed pen for growing and conspiracy...Do a risk reward assessment, then make your decision...200k to 400k start-up cost...

How about moving outside of

How about moving outside of the U.S. and grow it? Is there some safe country or area such as central or south America where there isn't a tyrannical DEA or government that doesn't crack down on it.

You can legally..

grow in Canada...!00%....South and Central American have crazy laws etc...Or all over Europe you can grow with minimal penalty...Switzerland is a free for all too...

depends...

most people that grow "medical" grade pot do so hydroponically. So, Im not sure thats a "farm" really...an indoor farm I guess.
I dont know about it being very profitable either...at least not like it is now. Once it's legal it will most likely go way down in price.
