Professor: Drones Will Soon Be Able To Kill During War Without Human Assisitance

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Drones could soon operate without the help of humans.

Agence France-Presse is reporting that the Pentagon wants its drones to be more autonomous, so that they can run with little to no assistance from people.“Before they were blind, deaf and dumb,” Mark Maybury, chief scientist for the U.S. Air Force, told AFP. “Now we’re beginning to make them to see, hear and sense.”

Ronald Arkin, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, believes that drones will soon be able to kill enemies on their own independently. “It is not my belief that an unmanned system will be able to be perfectly ethical in the battlefield, but I am convinced that they can perform more ethically than human soldiers are capable of,” Arkin told AFP.

Not too bright if you ask me.

They sell this as saving American lives. I see it as one more detachment from the reality of war and we know our gubberment won't stop.. Maybe it'll replace police officers on street corners and paroling neighborhoods.

Wouldn't that be so cool. You go outside and a flying drone with a machine gun is hovering near your block.

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution, inevitable.

are they going to

call it skynet?

SteveMT's picture

.."they can perform more ethically than human soldiers.." Ha!

We are two steps away from Skynet, but probably only one step. Whenever the government makes an announcement, they already have it, and they are working on the next step.

Prepare to become extinct. Unfortunately, this is not a joke.

"Skynet is a fictional, self-aware artificial intelligence system which features centrally in the Terminator franchise and serves as the franchise's main antagonist. Scarcely depicted visually in any of the Terminator media, Skynet's operations are almost exclusively performed by war-machines, cyborgs (usually a Terminator), and other computer systems, with its ultimate goal the extinction of the human race."

has become Death from above.

And,

Human life is zero, when machines are the heroes.

How Progressive of Them

Where is Kucinich on this? Fiengold? Gravel? I'm sure this isn't the sort of "progressivism" they envisioned, right? The socialist dream of the well-doers has become the fascist nightmare of the republic.

"The rich man writes the book of laws the poor man must defend, but the highest laws are written on the hearts of honest men."

Why do I suddenly feel like the future is going to be like ...

... the future in Terminator.

I think the title is midleading

"Drones will soon be able to kill during war without human assistance"

I am pretty sure they will be able to kill ALL the time without human assistance. But then again, it does appear we are at war ALL the time so I guess I am arguing trivial little points.

I think we have

entered the Twilight Zone Age of Mankind.
