"What can I do to get you to vote for Romney?" *Updated*

So at our county central committee last night I was commenting about how the Romney campaign had shot themselves in the foot by the way they treated the RP Republicans.

Later a lady came up to me and told me how desperate she was to get our votes for Romney. "I don't think our country can survive another four years of Obama as president!"

I told her that she was asking a lot of RP Republicans to expect them to turn around and support someone whose campaign had virtually spit in their faces in Tampa and subsequently seemed content to treat us like we didn't exist.

"But what can I do, as an INDIVIDUAL, to win their votes?", she asked.

That had me stumped. I know there were a lot of things I could have said.

I could have told her that she should have been listening to the RP Republicans last January when we were telling her that Ron Paul was the only candidate that could beat Obama.

I could have told her a lot of similar "I told you so's".

But to really answer her question, I was stumped.
I told her I would get back to her.

What should I tell the lady?

Tell her to write to Romney and ask him to start chanting "End the Fed!" at his next rally? Tell him to renounce the new anti-grassroots RNC rules? Tell him to announce that he is no longer going to play ball with the Bilderbergers/CFR/military-industrial-Wall Street complex?

Tell her to forget about it and worry about getting our congressman elected?

I know there is no perfect answer to a question like this. The question itself shows that she doesn't understand the nature of our political situation.

So what should I tell her? What should my message from the RP community be?

============================= UPDATE ============================

Thank you for all of your sincere (and sometimes amusing) comments.
I am sorry I have not had time to read or comment on all of them individually.

Here is my lame but sincere attempt to try to help her (and some of my other committee members)to see the situation through our eyes and maybe get her to help us move the GOP in a positive direction.

"Dear Central Committee Member,

In answer to a question I received at our meeting Monday night (i.e. "What could I do as an individual to persuade Ron Paul Republicans to vote for Romney?"), I think this article might hold part of the answer.

Letters: Conventional Wisdom and Rejection of GOP 'Top-Down' Structure

Ron Paul supporters are an eclectic bunch of individualists who are motivated more by principle than by leadership, even Ron Paul's. I think that is one reason why Ron Paul did not bother to endorse anyone running for president this year. He knew they wouldn't have listened to him anyway.
(By the way, that fact alone should debunk the myth that Ron Paul supporters are in any way a "cult". Whoever heard of a cult where the "exalted leader" can't even order his "followers" to do something as simple as vote for a certain candidate? Think about it.)

Assuming that we can't get Mitt to denounce the disgusting new RNC rules, the next best thing would be to have the grassroots Republicans show some backbone and do it for him.
I know this might seem like a petty issue to many in the GOP. Many of you think the world is going to come to an end if Obama is re-elected. Obviously swing voters are NOT going to share that viewpoint. While many Democrats and Independents are disappointed by Obama's failure to distinguish himself from George Bush on civil rights and foreign wars; the RP Republicans and liberty-leaning Independents are just as disappointed in Romney for his failure to distinguish himself from Obama.

As much as they loathe the prospect of FOUR more years of Obama, they are just as fearful of EIGHT more years of a Bush-style presidency (continual expansion of the "imperial" executive branch, endless foreign wars justified by "American Exceptionalism", skyrocketing national debt caused by blank checks written to the Industrial-Military-Wall Street complex, more liberal social engineering like "No Child Left Behind" or encouraging banks to make bad mortgages to minorities, more erosion of our constitutional rights in the name of "national security",more nation-building and policing the world in the name of U.N. resolutions, more budget-busting, socialism like the Medicaid Part D Prescription program and the TARP bailouts).

Because the only thing worse than a president like Obama is a president like Obama with an "(R)" behind his name.
Because when a president has an "(R)" behind his name, all of our defenses go down.
Because the Limbaughs and Hannitys and O'Reillys all stop becoming critics and start becoming cheerleaders.
Because no matter how badly the president behaves in office, no matter how many conservative principles he betrays, no matter how many campaign promises he forgets, no matter how many GOP platform planks he ignores; he is STILL the "leader of the GOP", and we fall in rank behind him.

So how can you convince a Ron Paul Republican to vote for Romney?

Convince him that you aren't going to let the Republican Party continue to be a rubber stamp for the elite political insiders.

Convince him that you aren't going to roll over and play dead in four years if Romney behaves like a Republican In Name Only.

Convince him that the good Republicans are fed up with having our most important decisions made in smoke-filled rooms by a handful of party bosses and confirmed by a pep rally (scripted on a teleprompter) disguised as a political convention.

Convince him that Republicans are ready to take control of their own party, instead of following their leaders like sheep to the slaughter.

You might want to start by convincing him that the REPUBLICAN PARTY is not a cult; that we have minds and principles of our own.

Tell her

She is not the one being voted on, instead of trying to convince us she ought to be trying to convince Romney to convince us.

As to what Romney can do... He can pressure the rnc to reverse its take over rules and use their god rule to destroy their own authority and the rule itself. He can denounce and be rid of the instigators of such overreach. He can let third parties into the debate, even if he fears the consequences. He can read aloud the text of a written oath, swear to it, and sign it, stating he will resign from the presidency or forfeit half his family's wealth to the campaign for liberty if he 1. Goes to war without a formal declaration of war from the US congress, 2. Promotes or defends any position toward the patriot act and ndaa other than their total reversal or fails to actively pursue their reversal, 3. Fails to reduce US intervention and reduce the number bases, covert actions, and mercenary forces around the world, 4. Fails to support a full and complete audit of the fed, and others can complete the list as i have to go now...

I wont believe his words. Something needs to be on the line if she does get him to come around to RP positions.

I'd say "Ma'am, with all due respect, there is nothing...

...you can do now to persuade any TRUE Ron Paul supporter to vote for Romney.

If we did that, we would undo all the time, effort, and money we've spent the last 5 years working for the cause of liberty.

The RNC made their final choice regarding us in Tampa and we'll remember in November."

But to make her feel better you can tell her that at least we won't be voting for Obama.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Tell her the TRUTH!

There's nothing else you can do, or should do.

LKY's picture

She will not understand

No matter what you tell her. She is sincere but at the same time still clueless.

I don't support Ron Paul is not because he is Ron Paul, or he has a "R" behind his name. I support Ron Paul because he is a man with Principle and Integrity. He is the one who understands and follows the Constitution. He is the only one who tells us the real problem of this country and who has a real solution to it.

If she can prove these same quailities in Romney, then I will vote for Romney.

I'd say it was impossible

... because Ron Paul's supporters are supporting a platform of wise ideas that neither Romney or Obama have any credibility in saying they share. Romney would have to go back and say and do so many different things over the last two decades to get our support that she should write us off.

On the other hand, you could tell her that Gary Johnson is getting most of our votes and thus has a likely 15% minimum vote and a theoretical possibility of winning. If she worked to get Johnson more votes...

Every vote for Romney is a vote for Obama!

Tell her every vote for Romney is a vote for Obama - but that's ok she can join a winning team by voting for Gary Johnson!

Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof

Romney is identical or potentialy worse than Obama.

Forget to call her back. She doesn't get it, or at least call her back and say there is nothing she can do as it was never her fault Romney is a evil man.

...tell her

to go pound sand.

...that if obama wins, it will only rush in the revolution that much more quickly, instead of slowly poisoning us with another false prophet's pablum...

What I would tell her:

"I would begin by telling the truth because that's what they want to hear. It's not about Ron Paul as much as it's Ron Paul's message, which you know the RNC in Tampa was televised, so the entire world saw the RNC disenfranchise Maine's Ron Paul delegates, changed the rules from 5 state plurality to 8, would not give Ron Paul's qualified, and elected delegates, the honor and respect, of saying 'Ron Paul' when their votes were cast, and played a tribute to Ron Paul, but refused to let him speak.

GOP committees all over the USA are very concerned about what they saw and heard from the RNC. Now, after fighting the only people in America who joined this party to restore America to constitutional government, unlike the majority who are registering Independent of Party, we are experiencing blowback, having hurt these people and silenced their message, Ron Paul's message of 'Restoring America to Constitutional Government".

What you are asking is only possible if you can convince others in the GOP that telling the truth, being transparent, opening the committee to the Ron Paul RepubliCANs message, and promising to hold Romney to Restoring the Republican Party to constitutioanal Government.

Are you willing to do that? That is what it's going to take to get some of these voters back. Some of them. So unless you are willing to stand up for them, you need to understand why they will not stand with you or for Romney."

I don't think there is

I don't think there is anything that she can do personally. Romney has lost our votes already. He was a moderate Governor. He laughed at Ron Paul in the 2008 debates. He, the GOP, and FOX did everything they could to minimize Ron Paul's impact on the 2012 election starting in Iowa all the way through Tampa. And Romney has predictably ran to the middle over the past three months. If she wants to educate herself by reading Rothbard, Von Mises, and Paul than that is great. But I wouldn't give my vote to Romney so she'll better herself. She should want to do that anyway.

"Where liberty is, there is my country." -Benjamin Franklin

What Michael said is so true: "What would be a disaster...

...would be for Romney to win in spite of not having support from Ron Paul and his supporters. That would just prove our irrelevance."

If that happens after all our effort the last 5 years, it will be extremely concerning for the liberty movement.

And it will bolster the republican party and cause them to believe they have not done any wrong.

That will be most depressing for me.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."

Almost makes me want to vote for Obama, but I just don't think I can do that. We're screwed either way.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
Friedrich Nietzsche

There is nothing she can do

Mittens is everything we DON'T want in a presidential candidate. I think the I-told-you-so's should suffice.

All Romney supporters have dug their own grave.

Now they know what it's like to desperately want someone elected. Now they know that it was Romney all along who wasn't electable.

It's a shame, really

I pray to God that he fails in every way for what they have done cheating him in as the nominee. I wouldn't vote for him if my life depended on it. He is damaged goods and he deserves to fail. Down with Romney. May his everyday be worse than the one before. Amen.

Peace & Liberty!

My initial reaction

was to say that's like asking "What can I do to get you to beat your wife?" or something along those lines. In a word, "nothing."

But then I thought you have a unique opportunity to educate her. It may be worth your vote to educate her and her friends. May be you could get her to read one of Dr. Paul's books in return for your promise to vote for Romney. Or, as someone else said, get her to restate Dr. Paul's positions in a way that shows that she at least understands.

“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants.” — Albert Camus

Tell her this.

Tell her that there are lots of Ron Paul supporters, who unlike yourself aren't still petting our poor, precious feelings that got stepped on at the RNC convention.

Tell her there are lots of Ron Paul supporters out here who don't put ourselves or our movement ahead of the country.

Tell her there are lots of Ron Paul supporters out here who have actually educated ourselves on the healthcare issue and understand that Obamacare will destroy jobs, wages, medical care quality, and drive up medical and healthcare costs like no other factor in U.S. history.

Tell her not all Ron Paul supporters are as selfish as you are.

Tell her there are lots of Ron Paul supporters who are voting for Mitt Romney and she shouldn't worry about the self-centered grumps who aren't.

Tell her you work for Romney Dixie-Paleocon

and that you are were outted as a fake Ron Paul member because of her.

Couldn't have said it better myself

She is so obviously a Romney plant... It's actually kind of funny. You would imagine with the money Romney pulls they could have at least found a better plant.

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

You actually admit to this?

You must be a shill or simply a political twit..carry on..your vote won't help the cheating, lying warmonger get elected. Nice try.

Peace & Liberty!

Kool-Aid anyone?

Wha? .....hey....who stole my country?

Scare them, re-frame their

Scare them, re-frame their question by answering it with a goal of the Liberty movement. Tell them they can beat Obama by bringing down the Federal Reserve.

Tell her to visit Gary Johnson's website

I was about to comment the same thing.

Tell her Mitt Romney needs to be replace with Ron Paul

Other wise it is 4 more years of Obama. Who would she rather have, Ron Paul or Obama. That is the only way we are voting Republican.

Agreed, if the RNC can get

Agreed. If the RNC can get away with half the shit they already have, then there is no reason why they can't make it happen.

There is nothing u can do to get me to vote for Romney
There is nothing u can do to get me to vote for Obama

Love Liberty, be Vigilant

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Faith in God will prevail all things!

She's asking the wrong question

Tell her she is asking the wrong question. She seems concerned about her country, so her question should be something more like "What can I do to help my country?". Tell her you can answer that question. Her other question has her locked in a corner with virtually no options leaving her frustrated as what she can do. So, starting with better questions has to be the solution.

ON the right Track

I believe you are on the right track on this one. She framing in a question that in this case won't change anything. I have the feeling that there is nothing that would make you vote for Romney unless he magically decided to change his entire policy and meant it.

My particular suggestion would be to explain that while you can see that she deeply cares about this country, there is nothing she can do to sway your vote. Then explain your reasoning in a non-confrontational manner. If she tries to get confrontational just excuse yourself.

You could also ask her how you could get her to vote for another candidate.

Good point.

I would be interested to hear what she would have to say if I asked her what it would take for her to vote for Ron Paul. Unfortunately, she would probably say that I wouldn't have to convince her if her only choices were RP and Obama.
