Letter: Libertarian candidate offers a credible third-party choiceSubmitted by legalizeliberty on Tue, 10/02/2012 - 11:31
With the presidential election less than six weeeks away, it is interesting to see the opinions given by people, the press or social media about who they will or will not vote for. The Democrats call for “staying the course,” while the Republicans ask “are you better off than four years ago?”
For the past 25 years,or so, this country has seen nothing more than decline and governmental inertia. It seems the wishes of the people are not heard, and the government stumbles from one partisan crisis to another with no end in sight. It has been said that 80 percent of the electorate would vote for a credible third-party candidate, if they had one.
In a recent column in The Mountain Press, John Stossel has named this candidate. He is the Libertarian Party candidate for President, Gary Johnson. As the Republican governor from the traditionally Democratic state of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, Johnson administered his state on an anti-tax, anti- bureaucratic platform driven by cost benefit. During his term-limited tenure, Johnson built roads and revamped his state’s Medicaid and education systems. All this while he trimed the state’s bureauracy, balanced the budget and left it with a $1 billion surplus.
