TSA to Deploy Marijuana Detecting Body Scanners

Gizmodo: Hidden Government Scanners Will Instantly Know Everything About You From 164 Feet Away

Within the next year or two, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will instantly know everything about your body, clothes, and luggage with a new laser-based molecular scanner fired from 164 feet (50 meters) away. From traces of drugs or gun powder on your clothes to what you had for breakfast to the adrenaline level in your body—agents will be able to get any information they want without even touching you.

And without you knowing it.

The technology is so incredibly effective that, in November 2011, its inventors were subcontracted by In-Q-Tel to work with the US Department of Homeland Security. In-Q-Tel is a company founded "in February 1999 by a group of private citizens at the request of the Director of the CIA and with the support of the U.S. Congress." According to In-Q-Tel, they are the bridge between the Agency and new technology companies.

Their plan is to install this molecular-level scanning in airports and border crossings all across the United States. The official, stated goal of this arrangement is to be able to quickly identify explosives, dangerous chemicals, or bioweapons at a distance.

The machine is ten million times faster—and one million times more sensitive—than any currently available system. That means that it can be used systematically on everyone passing through airport security, not just suspect or randomly sampled people.

For the technically literate

Which mostly excludes me - an explanation of how
how THz band (far infrared) signals are generated, basically
how they are used for spectroscopy and discussion about
means of detecting the signals:

Thanks for the link

I was looking for more details too. That device they show on Gizmodo cannot possibly be the final implementation, as there isn't even a laser attached to it, nor a computer... it looks like something I would build in my garage.

Seems a few canine units

Seems a few canine units could do pretty much the same thing without being so intrusive. It's great technology I suppose, but in the hands of government, like almost everything else, is a danger.

Wow, pretty cool, although I don't know why the title of the article emphasizes marijuana... anyone can tell a pot smoker just by looking at their eyes and listening to them speak.... duh, big secret.

Seems like the medical aspects of this will be incredible, especially detecting cancer, pathogens, or possibly even viruses if it can go that small, and doing it cheaply.

Post the hell of of this....

Post it on facebook, twitter, google, everywhere, make millions more aware as soon as possible. We need to create the awakening.

will put the airlines out of business. Or in Obama-Romney world, they are too big to fail and are bailed out.

Reading the comments on

Reading the comments on Gizmodo makes me sick.

Any normal person should be pissed off about this. Why does this report mention marijuana specifically? I'll tell you why, because this isn't about terrorism, it's about Corportism. The Corporatists are attacking every inch of freedom we have. They want us to obey their every rule, and it has hit a breaking point... Too bad no one, not even our court system, is hitting the breaks!

We are becoming dumb animals by the day and no one seems to give a #%#€ accept for a couple million people who listen to Alex Jones. The problem is, most of those people live a life of preparedness and seclusion already and don't care either.

We are doomed....

The gov's operations already have

each and every one of us under the microscope of surveillance. Text messages are read, your whereabouts are tracked through GPS in your phones, they know when you take money from the bank, how and what you're buying, they read your emails, listen to your phone conversations....even our local flea market has CIA walking around (retired and otherwise) talking to people

truth is...if you smoke pot...they already know it....

So keep your uncle's number so he can bail you out of jail before lights out :)

Florida Boy Arrested For Farting In School

Perhaps the biggest danger the powers that be will soon face is the unpleasant discovery they have mandated the same punishment for a victimless crime as they have for a violent one, and some fed up person with skills chooses the latter as a solution.

I Wonder if Hemp fiber

sets these evil machines off. If so, Ima wear a stylish hemp accoutrement ehrrdangday!

Any unemployed pot smokers

Any unemployed pot smokers out there? Get a job at a dry cleaners and drop a tiny leaf in each article leaving the store! If everyone is stopped and hassled, the people will put a stop to this nonsense!

Great idea....

Good think'in ...Countermeasures dept.

so can a dog

and at least the dog and laser will keep their hands to themselves, and you wont have to take a naked picture with xray machines.

We would all do ourselves a

We would all do ourselves a bit of good if we visited the company's website. They have a bunch of information on all of their "projects" and how they are there to save the day.

NOT THAAAAT?! How are you gonna enjoy Hannukah, if your smokin' Marijuanica?

Burn that bridge

According to In-Q-Tel, they are the bridge between the Agency and new technology companies.

This starts with TSA and border patrol

but it won't stop there. Probably won't be long before there's a scanner in every patrol car. Bid brother marches on.

Radical Ideas: By Adding Sensor Arrays, Postal Trucks Could Become a Nationwide Data-Collecting Network

The Idea (pg 4 has the details):

Postal Sensor Fleet Idea Gets Tentative Nod From the USPS

Why do you think the USPS was forced into debt. So they can become the government spies. "Want your pension? at what cost"

They should change the name to USGS (US Gestapo Service)

They SHOULD let the post office die. But NO, they keep feeding the beast, to make sure it's still driving ALL the neighborhoods with their "happy" sensors in tow.

And the constitutionality of killing it is easily debatable.

I bet the machine can be

I bet the machine can be easily fooled.

The joke will be on the

The joke will be on the people who sit on the airport parking shuttle bus, and pick up the gun powder a prankster left on the seats.

I wonder if they will also

I wonder if they will also interrogate us about how cocaine ended up on all the money we're carrying.

I've said this over and over

We have GOT to STOP funding our enslavement and allowing TPTB to use OUR TAX DOLLARS to spy on us. Somebody has GOT to start a peaceful non-compliance movement that has lawyers involved with legal documents that proclaim "we the people" are not trying to avoid paying our taxes or break any laws. However, the American people are being abused beyond Orwells worst nightmare and we have no other choice than to choke off the money spigot!

To the commenter below that said it can be used against the people in DC. HA! That's what waviers and exemptions are for. They draft up as many waviers and exemptions as they do unconstitutional laws.

I'm 49 and this makes smoke come out of my ears. But what REALLY gets my blood boiling is that my 22 year old daughter is going to around long after I'm gone and I just CAN'T leave her in such a perverted totalitarian Police State. If "we the people" don't come up with some solutions pretty soon....I'm going to be sneaking across the south border where all the drug cartels call home...SO THAT I CAN EXPERIENCE so sense of privacy and freedom.

get out the vote!

This is why voting and participating in the process is so important. We must take back the elected seats.
Those who aren't going to vote, to supposedly not give legitimacy to the system, are delusional. Politicians want thinking people to not vote, because thinking people will consider voting 3rd party.

And not voting isn't the issue for government. Not paying taxes is the issue. Anyone who thinks not voting is good should realize the government only cares about people not paying taxes.

We desperately need a state to push back. Will be good if a state legislature or people petition an item onto ballot that defines personal privacy and when a search warrant is needed so that they would be required to get a search warrant before using the machines in a certain state. In states that can petition items onto the ballot, is there enough support for a vote on personal privacy?

First its a gateway drug.

First its a gateway drug. Now it hijacks planes.

Not really funny. But you have to keep a sense of humour or ...

technology is intriguing and scary as hell at the same time. To think of the tremendous medical breakthrough potential it has, and know it's going to probably end up in some knuckle dragger's cop car is infuriating.

If it can penetrate clothing then it can penetrate skin. No telling what kind of negative health affects it could have. We still don't really know all of the issues with the body scanners they have now are.

What an Orwellian nightmare we are living in.

Someone could use that very

Someone could use that very same machine to determine which legislators are having affairs or using drugs and could then be used to destroy their careers.

Someone should totally use the machine for that purpose in order to teach legislators a lesson in privacy invasion.

I wonder how someone could obtain one of those machines....
