I imagine I know the answer to this question but I am not completely sure ... Does Ron Paul support federal government control of the Postal Service?

I don't think so. Because he

I don't think so. Because he has brought up this topic and I think he mentioned about the expensive first class stamps but I guess I got to read more just to be sure.. Phoenix direct mail services

Article I, Section 8, Clause 7

empowers congress to "establish Post Offices and post Roads" ... I am thinking this is debatable in that as the bureaucracy becomes a giant money sucking monopoly ...

In the early 19th century the supreme court allowed appropriation of land for the physical buildings ...

looks like congress whored out the constitution again by passing ridiculous laws that under mind the sacred document ...

I hate to be the devil's advocate here.

I think all governments run their country's postal services. Sad but its a standard, sort of. You can use UPS, Fedex, etc. for parcels, envelopes, etc. shipped within the US or overseas. A little bit more costly, though.

You want to know a monopoly? MTA of NY is a classic example. Either you agree with them or not, they have the say. If you are a regular guy with fixed salary, you have no other alternative that to suck it up in order to get to work.

Although the Constitution does

make mention of the government establishing postal routes, I would be surprized to find out that Dr. Paul did not support removing the USPS from the protection of a government monopoly.

definitely a Monopoly

Yes ... it is definitely a monopoly. It would be nice to see it privatized.

Here is a good article on the subject ... in the National Review of all places ... not that it should surprise me .... since it is a conservative publication ...

See the Colbert interview

In that interview he says that that competition in delivering the mail should be allowed. Right now competition is only legal in overnight mail. The prohibition on competition is why prices keep going up. Prices for stamps would be dropping a free market.

Not clearly opposed, but...

It would be foolish to call for the abolishment of the USPS tactically, since it's the largest employer in the world...but he has thrown some rhetoric around regarding this.

Basically, he accused the USPS of overcharging for first class stamps, since legally they have no competition, to offset a very low price for priority delivery, where UPS and FedEx are competing.

I have heard him talk about how this is a federally mandated advantage, and that we should be open to allowing private companies to sell first class postage, and deliver mail in the same manner as our USPS.

Dr. Paul is too smart to make this a big campaign issue, since the Postal Worker's Union is a massive group.

Lookup Lysander Spooner

Ron talks about Lysander Spooner a lot, so I assume he is against a federally funded and run postal service monopoly.

Like everything else...

He supports private control of things like this. Private Controll = competition.

I can't say if he supports the abolition of the USPS.
