Should Obama Do Another Cash For Clunkers to Stimulate the Economy?Submitted by Chris Cheesecurdski on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 02:16
(attn down-votin' haters - this is 1% satire 99% serious discussion so vote accordingly)
I read a story today on DP about a guy that bought a $25,000 car with $1000 worth of pre-1965 quarters (the 90% silver kind). He mentioned that the car he decided to buy was already discounted deeply, due he felt to the declining economy.
I couldn't help at this point but remember the eminently successful cash-for-clunkers car replacement program from 3 1/2 years ago.
Remember that - where people were able to take their functioning older vehicles, pour a plastic epoxy resin into the engine to insure they could never work again, and the government would give them money to buy a new car?
The program was so successful that the initial ceiling of %1 billion was soon exceeded, so it was doubled, then expanded again to nearly unlimited, within the timeframe of the program.
So. Could this program be duplicated now, with our economic situation even worse than it was back then, and expanded, to include other things as well?
Old cars would still be included, of course. How about washing machines? Dryers? Dishwashers?
What about lawn mowers, leaf blowers and snow blowers?
And those are just things with engines that can be destroyed with quick-hardening resins. What about things that don't have engines, but which people could still destroy and buy new versions of with the help of some free government money?
Now, a lot of these things can be destroyed effectively by pouring resin in or on them. But what about things that will still work no matter how much resin is poured on them, things like:
I propose special coupons, provided by the government, for axes, gasoline, and matches. The axes can be used to destroy all these things along with outdoor stuff like swing sets, jacuzzis, and fire pits, and the gasoline and matches can be used to destroy everything else, including the axes when folks are done with them.
Any remaining gasoline can be destroyed by the remaining matches, or allowed to sit in the sun and evaporate.
Thoughts, please DPers?
