What will the collapse realistically look like in America?

We all hear of this inevitable collapse of our economy, and quite possibly our liberties, from just about everybody. What I don't really hear being talked about or asked is what this collapse will actually look like. Things like: will there be mass starvations? Will we be fighting off rioters? Will we just not get to eat out as much, or will we all be living in vans down by the river?

Does anybody have realistic insight into this so we may all gain a clearer picture of what is apparently to come?

Thank you,

Google Dmitry Orlov 5 Stages of Collapse

Mr. Orlov lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union. His analyis of an American collapse is very interesting.

Excellent article

This portion was important to note:

"although there was much social dislocation and suffering (Soviet Union), society as a whole did not collapse, because most of the population did not lose access to food, housing, medicine, or any of the other survival necessities."

Aside from the collapse aside from foodstuffs and material goods

Which I covered below:

Local governments will collapse or dissolve, upper level governments will have access to loads of emergency supplies. These supplies are stockpiled for just such emergencies.

State level government will still have some capacity to exert control, but it will be at a localized level (ie, state capitals) For the most part, security and order will be implemented at state capital buildings. Don't expect them to answer your 911 call from the suburbs.
Don't expect them to feed you - if you rush the gate demanding food they will probably shoot you.

Federal level government will be operating on a state of emergency. Most useless federal offices will be abandoned, welfare, unemployment insurance, post offices, department of education, agriculture, etc.

Minor military bases will be abandoned, major military bases will be in full swing. The military will try to "control" the collapse, but with no domestic enforcement training, it will be a bloodbath.

CEOs, CFOs and upper crust executives will be flying or boating to rural areas of South America, New Zealand, or island getaways with small populations.

Once the population has been reduced to the point of self sufficiency regarding food, things will start to get back to normal - ain't natural selection grand?

Well, Zombie flicks are in vogue...

The Walking Dead: Season 2 is now out on Netflix...

There goes my 3 day weekend (my Roku's going overtime).

When and *IF* the collapse comes

It will be a worldwide collapse. Now this is speculation, but this is how I see it unfolding:

The first thing that would happen is food shortages. The average supermarket BARELY keeps enough stock to last a week of regular shopping days.

In the event of some sort of catastrophic collapse, every supermarket will empty in 24 hours.

The first things to go: bottled water, non-perishables such as canned goods, pasta, cereals, canned milk, rice, flour, batteries.

Gone are the days when food processors stockpiled their warehouses. Almost all companies don't process anything until an order is placed.

If you don't get out of the city within 48 hours, sad to say you will never get out, it will become a warzone.

If the collapse gets you down, pretend you decided to take two years off work to go camping in the sticks somewhere.

An ideal vehicle would be a 4wd truck with a little camper stuck on the back, filled with food and fuel containers.

Useful items: Hand tools - saws, picks, shovels, axes, bows, etc.
Get the kind where you can replace the handle, NOT the cheap kind.
I won't go into firearms as it's covered elsewhere exhaustively.
Hand generated (crank) items such as flashlights.

Non-useful items: Tvs, furniture, computers, phones, money.

the best preppers I found on youtube are, wouldn't you know it, r3VOLs; in fact I'd surmise that about 70% of American preppers are probably R3VOLutionaries, if not share much of the same sentiments:

1. David Kobler, aka SoutherPrepper1 and Scott Hunt, aka Engineer775 who are friends and business partners who live on a S. Carolina survival retreat with their family and a few others. They're fully living the 'prepper'-lifestyle, NOW. Kobler's a US Army combat vet who witnessed first hand in Iraq what happens when SHTF.

They were both featured on the original pilot episode of National Geographic's the DoomsDay Preppers:

It's also been my personal contention that there's really no "bugging-out" and you cannot survive in the long run without a community of like minded individuals: those who are tactically proficient, preferably similar geopolitical and spiritual beliefs, various skill sets from healers/counselors (both physical and psychological)/doctors/nurses, engineers, tinkerers, designers/artists, musicians, etc. IMO, creativity as well as hard skill sets are a must, if you intend on thriving, not just surviving.

So I'd say slowly practice living with less and less resources, be they food, modern articles you may eventually see as nothing more than material excess in the long run, etc.

Kobler's 'survival community retreat' is one of the best examples I've seen. The other only community that was featured on Nat.Geo's D.Preppers that had a remote chance of realistic survival, IMHO, was the Texan former Vietnam vet's compound built out of shipping containers:

Theirs, obviously may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if yours don't cover at least a few of the areas that that group covered in terms of resources, readiness, etc, it's gonna be a rough one.

Plus if you can't get used to living this way now, it's gonna be a long growth curve, one you may not survive through.

You will get a realistic view of the collapse

by looking first in your rear view mirror.

If you see something, say something, the government is listening.
Silence isn't golden, it's yellow.

So it appears more than a few

So it appears more than a few here believe the SHTF scenario is a myth. I leave you with these points to ponder...don't consider any one, but all of them as a whole...

NDAA : Government can detain or kill you without charges or trial now.

DHS purchasing billions of hollow point bullets for domestic use. Every agency has their own orders for hundreds of thousands of additional rounds.

FEMA camps throughout the USA that can house millions of citizens “in case of natural disasters”. The camps have barbed wire facing INWARD.

Executive orders out giving the President the right to take all natural resources, means of communication, means of food production, your personal property...and even your labor if necessary.

Latest scary legislation HR6566 - 'Mass Fatality Planning and Religious Considerations Act'.

These are only a start....

If the SHTF situation isn't possible, why is the government in OVERDRIVE the last year implementing these types of laws and executive orders?

One would just about have to

One would just about have to get all info from Fox news not to see what is coming...

Homeland security didn't buy

Homeland security didn't buy over a billion bullets for nothing.... Anyone who thinks this is as bad as it gets is in for a huge awakening. If it was a simple currency melt down that would be one thing. This collapse that is coming is by design to bring in the New World Order. I would guess they figure many of us American's are going to be to liberty minded, constitution loving, to fall into line (billion plus bullets).

SHTF Times are a coming?!

Just saw these on the early MSM boob tube news this AM.

"They" want us to eat less now...

Then all Costco gas station closes in Los Angeles and record gas price spikes overnight...this NEVER happened before.

Guess the SHTF Trend will start in Los Angeles...

I avoided filling up today, this Fri (which I usually do at Costco) to avoid the panic buyers syndrome...

LOL! Figures. That's us....

Useless eaters!

I'm a useless eater and PROUD, beeatch!

What would the Founders do?

I just bought gas at Costco

I just bought gas at Costco in Torrance.

You did...when?

You're close to the Carson refineries...but I'm not gonna be suckered for the panic buying, at least for the short term. I got over half a tank near 3/4 anyways. Plus a 3 day weekend for me (staycation)..time is on my side (till it lowers).

I went today at 4pm. It's

I went today at 4pm. It's where I always buy my gas. I was on empty. I believe the price was $4.39.

ecorob's picture

i hope the collapse doesn't come with...

Millions of rounds of ammo, tens of thousands of family type coffins, UN Forces relocating us to any one of 1000's of FEMA camps, and all being run by the elite of the TSA.

Will everyone, please, for a second, wtf up and look around you?

LOL... I know!

LOL... I know!NDAA is just for people who butt in the soup lines...

I don't know what the answer

I don't know what the answer is. But, I know it will be obvious to the average American once the majority of people start tearing out their lawns and replacing them with gardens.

Living in Los Angeles, I often wonder what would happen to the price of food, and the morale of people in general, if, instead of the city government throwing money down the toilet by planting these ridiculous trees and lawns all over the city, they instead planted fruit trees and vegetables.

Gas is now 5 bucks a gallon out here, and when food prices become unbearable, I think we are going to see a large portion of people start growing their own food.

LA will be a hell hole! Way

LA will be a hell hole! Way to many people and not nearly enough to go around. I would make a plan to leave that area...

Ill just leave this here

Argentina is in NO WAY the United States people! WE are on the TOP of this world and sadly like all Major Empires we too have become Consumers. History will repeat its self but this time... its Global.

The collapse

The collapse can come in many forms. The worst being a full on "everyman for himself" type civil unrest. the best case, A slow decline of the standard of living for almost everyone.

It all comes down to the rate of "awaking" VS the rate of inflation. so if people quickly wake up en mass and austerity hasn't started... then its a best case scenario. If most people continue with the stockholm syndrome type mindset of being dependent on the government until austerity hits... well then it's going to be VERY bad.

I personally believe that when the currency collapse happens and austerity talk starts, the dependent type people(obama phone lady) will get angry, protest will turn into riots, riots into supply disruptions, so on and so forth until the government declares massive emergency actions in major cites to stop it. once that happens all hell will break loose. 3 months of this and the world we know will be a much different place.

Regardless of what happens... its best to be prepared for anything. You should have at least 3 months of food and water and a basic set of survival supply and tools.

Tools of war are not always obvious. The worst weapon is an idea planted in the mind of man. Prejudices can kill, suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has an everlasting fallout all of its own.

like Argentina

with guns. That said, I don't think we are going to have a total meltdown...unlesss something really catastrophic happens. After all, the banksters can keep printing some form of currency and force people to use it. I think we are headed for a long slow torturous decline. Eventually, their will be no middle class...just rich and poor.

They can TRY to force people

They can TRY to force people to use it, but either two things will happen....prices go to the moon, or shelves empty.

but they don't care. They will be doing well. History shows that the ruling elite do not care about human all.

I'll tell you

Comments below are different because things can happen various ways. Many things depend on other things. I'll tell you though what posters have right is that it's already happening. You might say it started in 2008 when millions lost their jobs. Some jobs have come back but because of normal growth this hasn't reduced unemployment. True unemployment is well over 10%.

Right now we're in an inflationary depression. Since we're in the early stages though most Americans won't notice until things fall apart; which will happen rapidly, sort of like a roller coaster slowly climbing then dropping and picking up speed.

So your question is what happens then. Well, it will be very apparent to everybody once things have gone haywire. The people who are prepared will switch to survival mode. Everybody else will be in various states of chaotic disorder. People will suddenly realize the most valuable things in the world are food and water, and after that, because of the state of things, some form of protection. Unfortunately, the unprepared greatly outnumber the prepared and survival of the fittest will rule these people for a while until things settle down.

The main problem with monetary collapse is disorder. The world currently functions basically fine now, because everything is organized. How quickly things can get better depends on how quickly things can again start to have some kind of organization.

Thankfully, because of economic warnings from people like Ron Paul hundreds of thousands or more have been preparing, many for a long time. These will be the strong Americans that are able to begin organizing and rebuilding the fabric of society and economy.

It then remains to be seen how Americans organize themselves for government. With the dollar basically worthless, and the knowledge prepared people have about gold/silver the economy will begin to be based on that monetary exchange at local levels. The Liberty Movement will then have to continue the mission of electing liberty candidates to Congress, and hopefully eventually the presidency.

The U.S. will then look more similar to the rest of the countries of the world (like Argentina), with large numbers living in poverty, and people surviving based on local communities and resources.

Realistic insight.

Hunger Games.
