Wife thinks I'm losing it...

Sometimes I wish I had just taken the blue pill and can go back inside the Matrix. My wife and I are at odds over quite a few issues lately...GMO foods is the latest. After the French gmo rat study...I don't want the kids near the stuff. This is causing all kinds of friction over sodas, eating out, etc. The argument last night was over Halloween and the HFCS in the candy I don't want the kids eating.

She thinks I'm losing it and have turned into the most UNfun person around. Maybe she's right.

GMO, Chemtrails, Agenda 21, 9-11, coming dollar and financial collapse, etc, etc, etc,....it just never seems to stop. This rabbit hole I'm in seems to be a bottomless pit.

Looks like she chose junk food over her kids!

It a good feeling to see your kids smart health and strong. The wheat will be seperated from the chaff.

Hey madgunchemist

We share the children but she has chosen junk food over them. Just because they live with her half time does not mean she would hand over her toast for them.

Interestingly I used to unload wheat. No kidding and for 4 years. I know all about wheat and chaff. Did you know that we take a marginally nutritious product (wheat) and mill out the shell and the germ and then have to add B-1, B-2, B-3 & folic acid back in by government order?

Also interesting is that food does affect our smarts as well as our eyesight, hearing and everything else. Hormones, sleep, strength, endurance to name just 4.

We might never know the way this situation changes our children. Children love their moms and dads.

Hello Mr Twain

That name seems familiar. Hmmm. The theory is that we inherit our mother and father's nutritional ID on conception. The same mom that feeds us in the womb feeds us at the dinner table. When the time comes for us to be on our own most of us eat the same foods so you are correct in that we like the foods we are raised on. I did.

The down side is that if dad had prostate trouble and mom has thyroid issues we inherit them too. I'm holding heavy onto the fact that all "inherited" bad issues will be resolved. The rules is that 1 month of real food and only real food turns the clock back 1 year.

Wish me luck.

Do what you can...

to help your family remain healthy, while respecting their feelings. Be open to compromise. But remember... we're all worm food. Life goes by SO fast. It's over in an instant relatively speaking. Spend that brief time trying to live life to the fullest and enjoying your loved ones. Don't worry so much. It's easy to lose sight of the big picture especially with so many heinous things occurring in the world.

I'm worried for my good friend, because he's convinced the end of the world (as we know it) is nigh. He can't see passed two years. He has a wife and two children. He spends all of his extra money on prepping (much more on guns/ammo than food). I think it's wise to prepare, but one must be balanced. One must also prepare for the possibility that things won't be quite as bad as anticipated. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket so to speak. I digress.

Remember quality of life. Quantity is great, but without quality, what's the point?

A month later is was announced that Mrs. Clemens had been so indisposed since her arrival in Italy that no one outside her family had been allowed to see her. In the latter part of January it was said that her condition had greatly improved."

Mark again. I'll make you my last reply.

Robin Williams? What drug is he abusing now? Here is a seemingly little known fact. Brushing your teeth does little and may cause more harm then good. Teeth have roots and they get their nutrition from the food we eat. They are fed and stay healthy or not via what goes in our mouth headed for our stomach and not from what goes in our mouth and sticks to our teeth.

Tooth paste is sugary and brushing can damage gums. But it makes Robin look good while we are trashing Vietnam.

tons of great advice in this thread. We are so

lucky to accept a philosophy that is pure positivity. While everyday events are scary to the max, we know there are life/liberty/peace-enhancing solutions to every man-made problem.

But we need to avoid the common statist mistake: taking the "easy" out, advocating coercion for every problem rather than the subtler and more effective slow peaceable solution of voluntarism. Parents have ultimate authority and power over their kids and a similar temptation as statists to use that power for fast, superficial results.

I unevenly practiced libertarian parenting and still regret every instance when I "pulled rank" instead of finding creative albeit difficult agreement with my kids to resolve differences. Now my children are both in their 20s, very independent.

On the plus side I'm the first one they consult on all health issues now -- and my husband too though during our early parenting years we had extreme disagreements. So long term,if you consistetly supply good advice and factual information they will come around even though in the short term family members may oppose you.

For a time one of my children even rebelled and used dangerous substances beyond mere food choices. But now the same child comes to me for every question about how to keep my grandchild healthy.

On creativity: I encouraged vigorous trading of Halloween trick-treat stuff -- first trading among peers for their favorites; then I made an offer each of my children chose to accept: they kept a small quantity of their very favorite treats, then traded the rest with me, for an item or even cash they saw was a better deal than a huge stash of stale commercial candy.

For Easter, (we celebrated Spring Equinox) I made beautiful spring basket planted with little flowers such as Johnny Jump-Ups, pretty little herbs etc and hid colored eggs plus small fruit treats, coconut treats, and a couple of excellent and beautiful chocolate truffles --emphasizing the positives again, quality over sugar schlock. Take a page from Japanese presentation: a lot can be achieved with beauty over quantity.

With a few special, quality treats (dark chocolate is even considered healthy by many experts) holiday tradition and creative ceremony can help make any time memorable and happy.

Finally (sorry to go on at length but this subject is so important for changing to a positive culture of liberty and peace) check out the excellent series of videos by Molyneaux on peaceful parenting:

I want to thank everyone for

I want to thank everyone for your comments...I've gone through and read each of them.

I've always been into a healthy diet...mostly paleo. While I have avoided most processed foods, I wouldn't always be strictly organic on things like meats, eggs, etc. As far as the wife and kids (both kids under 10)...I'd try to guide them, but never pushed too hard.

This French study does appear to have some possible flaws...but unsettling nonetheless. For Russia to ban, or consider banning, all gmo corn into their country...that's saying something.

Anyhow...we're working on a compromise for Halloween (which my wife is absolutely nutty over). We're looking for some healthy treats to bake for the kids and still make it fun for them, while ultimately confiscating the bad stuff.

Hate to pop the 'sugar' bubble

but most sugar is made of GMO sugar beets. Do your own research (like good Paulians!) and you'll find this GMO crap is FAR more prevalent in the US food supply than you could imagine. It is extremely hard to avoid GMO's but that's certainly no reason to not try.

You have to read labels and that only helps if you know what to look for. Autolyzed yeast is really monosodium glutamate, or MSG. Flavored snack chips, crackers, meats, food bars, and many other items that appear healthy often contain it, despite the fact that, just like MSG, autolyzed yeast extract can cause headaches, reproductive problems, endocrine disruption, nervous system disorders, and other harm. (http://www.naturalnews.com/020426.html)

More pseudoscience bogus crap from Mike Adams

Glutamate is an amino acid that is in practically everything. It has been used as food enhancer and studied for 100 years and there is no evidence demonstrating that it is not safe. The fear is based on nothing. If you eat too much of course it will cause negative health effects. If you eat too much salt it has physiological consequences. If you drink too much water it has negative effects. He is fear mongering and pushing his natural agenda and people are lapping it up.

Why is it that Mike Adams and Natural News are the ONLY SOURCES ever cited?

X is so bad! Here is the proof! (It's a Mike Adams article)
Y is dangerous. Here is the proof! (Mike Adams again)
Z is poisoning the public! Here is the proof (Mike Adams again).

What is with you people and this snake oil salesman? Why do so people trust his propaganda like it is the word of God?

Am I the only one who is aware that he is mostly full of shit?

You are incorrect

Alright... now I've got my hackles up. There is a marked difference between naturally occurring glutamate and artificially produced MSG. Maybe YOU are the only one citing Mike Adams but there are plenty of unrelated studies and journals that have confirmed the dangers related to MSG and GMOs. Don't discount a real issue because of your problems with a single source. This isn't tree-hugging hippie propaganda, this is a legitimate conspiracy and is driven by profits and is gradually poisoning the American people. They told us DDT was safe. They told us PCB was safe. They told us this because of?... money, plain and simple. The only reason aspartame was able to become as prevalent as is did is because of lobbyists. And they got their FDA lapdogs to protect their proprietary product by deeming natural alternatives such as stevia 'unsafe'. I have friends that thought they had Parkinson's but turns out they had far too much aspartame in their diets. They avoided diet drinks and like magic... their symptoms vanished and no more problems. This isn't about moderation. Yes you can die from drinking too much water. But even small amounts of GMO's and things like MSG do have effects. I don't take Mike Adams as God's truth and I don't care for Alex Jones' particular flavor of wacky. But they do report on things that most people don't, and from there you can do your own homework and confirm what is legitimate. And there's plenty of proof.

The US has dismal health compared to the rest of the world... why is that? We have the best healthcare on the planet. But look at American birth rates over the last 20 years. Look at the unbelievable increase in diabetes. Look at the spike in children on the autism spectrum and millions of kids that now have bizarre food allergies. This wasn't happening 20 years ago. Correlation does not equate with causation but the agricultural corporations have been given carte blanche to experiment with whatever product they can think up and sell it to an unknowing public. The only people that actually defend these abominations are usually corporate plants telling the populace to just relax and keep drinking the kool-aid. Kinda like the Republican party telling us all to just relax and fall in line. Mark, if you think there is no evidence demonstrating MSG is unsafe, you're flat out wrong. I don't want to start a flame war, especially with a fellow patriot, but I'm having trouble understanding why you're defending this stuff. If your point is moderation in general, that's valid. But don't argue moderation of something that is clearly unhealthy in any amount. Our bodies are able to deal with natural toxins and other things that should be ingested 'in moderation'... but the reality is that nobody knows how the human body reacts to mis-folded DNA strands and exotic proteins that don't exist in nature.

Rapid fluttering hearbeat and headaches is a joy

And that is the reason I do not just eat at any random Chinese eatery because some load the food with it.It is unnecessary as sea salt could be used.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/monosodium-glutamate/AN01251

MSG has been used as a food additive for decades. Over the years, the FDA has received many anecdotal reports of adverse reactions to foods containing MSG. These reactions — known as MSG symptom complex — include:

Headache
Flushing
Sweating
Facial pressure or tightness
Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas
Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
Chest pain
Nausea
Weakness

However, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms. Researchers acknowledge, though, that a small percentage of people may have short-term reactions to MSG. Symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods containing MSG.

Chinese restaurant syndrome is a HOAX

Anecdotal.

There are also thousands of anectdotal claims about UFOs. And Bigfoot. And any other stupid paranoid myths society latches onto.

Listing symptoms demonstrates nothing.

Give me a mechanism.

You are wrong

I have experienced it first hand many times and it can be attributed to nothing else but MSG because the heart fluttering only happens when I eat Chinese food at restaurants or packaged food that is loaded with it. It happened every time or used to since I am now meticulous about what I eat. For years I didn't know what his was and even wound up in the hospital over it once.

Isolating Glutamatic acid and eating it in large amounts when it is NOT an essential amino acid, which means that the body produces what is needed and we don’t need to make it up in our diet is the problem and man people are sensitive to that. Why else would people suffer "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" all over the world?

Saying "Chinese restaurant syndrome is a HOAX" demonstrates nothing mr know it all...

Is it all free glutamate that you have trouble metabolizing?

How do you do with Parmesian cheese? Or tomatoes?

Fine with naturally occurring

I grow my own tomatoes Red Heirlooms and Green Zebras and this years crop is almost finished,no problems and I eat them every day.

I do not eat a lot Parmesan cheese but the content is really low there anyway.

If I was to go and eat at the Chinese place around the corner for dinner tonight within about 45-60 min. I would be having heart fluttering that is just incredible and it would go on for a few hours.

this stuff only.

No. He's part of the Alex

No. He's part of the Alex Jones fear squad. Thats all we need to know. A lot of what he says is true, but he needlessly scares the crap out of people to the point that they will ruin their childrens halloween. Im mostly disappointed with the liberty people who gobble it up because it proves how sheepish and naive they are (the very type of people they dislike).

By "ruin your childrens

By "ruin your childrens halloween" do you really mean, "make you feel guilty because now you know how horrible that bag of GMO-based candy crap is for your kids and you're gonna give it to them anyway?" The naive ones are the people that don't take this stuff seriously.

I appeciate your rational response.

The fact that Mike Adams is so dangerous is because he says SOME things that are true. Same thing with Alex Jones. I used to enjoy hearing both of their opinions until I realized that many people take everything they say literally. Some take it obsessively.

I'm saddened that people are taking their fear mongering so seriously that it is changing their lives. This is the most depressing thread I have ever read on the DP.

Hear, Hear!

What's up with all the institutionalized paranoia?

And what does "GMO" mean? "Genetically modified organisms?" People have been eating genetically modified food ever since they discovered hybrids.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH REAL FOOD!!!!!

Freedom is my Worship Word!

Alex jones

Alex jones woke me up with fear. Alex jones is simple telling the truth, and the truth is scary. The ONLY thing about Alex is that he can exaggerate at times on issues.

He wants you to do more than

He wants you to do more than wake up with fear. He wants you to submit to it. Google "submit to fear" and ask yourself why Alex Jones inserts the phrase into his movies as a subliminal message.

What he said. Also, just

What he said.

Also, just relax. Stop obsessing over every possible problem and live life. Life is not worth living if worry, fear and caution consume it; especially when many of the fears are based on pseudo-scientific opinions. There are millions living perfectly normal, long, and healthy lives whom eat all kinds of things pseudo-scientists warn us against. I say live with the risk and don't look back.

At a minimum... take a break from everything political for a few months and then come back to it. A few months off isn't going to kill you.

stick with the sugar cane regardless. Or stevia! thats a good substitute.

great advice below by pm17brad

I'll just add if you aren't having any fun you need to change your perspective. Make sure you have some fun with your family else it is all for naught.

I like to think about it this way...huge amounts of GMO and other crap can kill you but small amounts might be helpful or even homeopathic. You body needs to learn to fight things off somehow.

Take some advice from Ron Paul...

Sodas...

I just noticed Sierra Mist says it is made with sugar (not HFCS).

It's rough - once you realize most of this stuff really is poison. I have a hard time with the Halloween candy industry ("the pagan festival" LOL love it!) I will look into the Heath Bars (made with sugar). This year I will do some more research and post what I find.
