The Idiot Box: How TV Is Turning Us All Into Zombies

By Frederik Joelving

(Reuters Health) - That clamor in the background? It's probably the TV, and it might be taking a toll on your toddler's development, researchers say.

According to the first national estimate of background television exposure, children in the U.S. spend nearly as much time around a switched-on television as they do in school.

Between the age of eight months and eight years, kids spend an average of 232 minutes a day with the TV droning on in the background, researchers found. Add to that the 80 minutes of active watching that previous studies have found, and you land at just over five hours of daily interaction with the electronic babysitter.

Television re-wires your mind and alters your consciousness; Studies find that children’s brains are not developing properly

How about the televisions in the

dentist and doctors EXAMINATION rooms. Not the lobby area but where the dentist/doctor sees you in private.

The dental hygenists/nurses are so mesmerized by the stupid thing that they are not paying attention to the patient.

First thing I say is turn that thing off.

i agree

The idiot box is what it is. My kids will watch tom and jerry, scooby doo, a few shows, I watch news to get a laugh how they spin everything, and a movie now and then. I hate tv, always controlled by someone with an agenda.

For Liberty!!!

...

The last paragraph rings true for me. We haven't had a tv in two years. Our 16 month old yammers constantly and will attempt to repeat just about anything you ask her to. Being my first I haven't much to compare it to. Still, it isn't anything I want to try and prove. I don't miss that idiot box at all. Well, maybe Deadliest Catch...

SPONGE BOB says it all

SpongeBob Square Pants has a great episode on this...oddly enough, it's called:

The Idiot Box

And ironically enough, it's on T.V. : )

In other words, they spend nearly as much time being turned into zombies, as they do being indoctrinated into drones.

Which is why

I watch The Walking Dead. Now I know how to handle them zombies :)

Only Watch

Two and a Half Men BEFORE they fired Charlie Sheen, Simpsons, Southpark, and Supernatural. Yeah, I know, silly shows, but WHAT on TV isn't? At least these are intertaining and require SOME degree of thought. Unlike those stupid "reality" shows that are actually scripted!

skippy

Which is why I don't even

Which is why I don't even turn mine on (except for Doctor Who on occassion lol)

Which doctor is your fave?

My kids liked David Tenet the best...gotta love the Converse sneekers.

Interesting. Within the last several years I've found myself muting the TV when pwople talk or it goes to commwrcial. I noticed how stressful and distracting it is.
