Ron Paul: Vote to Preserve MLK Jr.'s Legacy of Freedom on January 15

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul today issued the following statement to Michigan voters reflecting on the struggle for civil rights and the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"It is especially fitting that Michigan voters will choose a presidential candidate to uphold their Constitutional freedoms this Tuesday. January 15 is the birthday of the great freedom fighter, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the chosen date for the 2008 Michigan presidential primary.

"To me, the timing is more than a coincidence. Michigan voters have the opportunity to choose a candidate who will uplift the ideals for which Dr. King fought--and died.

"The fight for freedom--the preservation of our civil rights--is the fight of our lives. Sadly, after Dr. King's passing we are faced with a violation of our civil rights as flagrant as Jim Crow: The Patriot Act. I have stood against this and all unconstitutional violations of American's civil rights.

"Dr. King would be disappointed in our current administration for more than its continued disregard for civil rights, as he stated 'a nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.' We need to change our interventionist foreign policy, and take care of our brothers and sisters at home. Our nation is in a crisis: we are spending billions on war overseas while those around us are suffering with lost jobs. It is inexcusable; we must solve the economic crisis at home.

"As you settle your minds on who to vote for this January 15, on the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., remember that your vote strengthens the fight for our civil rights. Freedom-- limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights--can uplift us all. Vote for me, and vote to preserve Dr. King's legacy of freedom on January 15."

Dr. Ron Paul is a ten-term Texas congressman seeking the Republican nomination for President of the United States.

Racism -- One of RP's Campaign Issues

Vote RON PAUL 2008

Issue: Racism
“The true antidote to racism is liberty. Liberty means having a limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights rather than group claims.”

A nation that once prided itself on a sense of rugged individualism has become uncomfortably obsessed with racial group identities.

The collectivist mindset is at the heart of racism.

Government as an institution is particularly ill-suited to combat bigotry. Bigotry at its essence is a problem of the heart, and we cannot change people's hearts by passing more laws and regulations.

It is the federal government that most divides us by race, class, religion, and gender. Through its taxes, restrictive regulations, corporate subsidies, racial set-asides, and welfare programs, government plays far too large a role in determining who succeeds and who fails. Government "benevolence" crowds out genuine goodwill by institutionalizing group thinking, thus making each group suspicious that others are receiving more of the government loot. This leads to resentment and hostility among us.

Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than as individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups. By encouraging Americans to adopt a group mentality, the advocates of so-called "diversity" actually perpetuate racism.

The true antidote to racism is liberty. Liberty means having a limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights rather than group claims. Liberty means free-market capitalism, which rewards individual achievement and competence - not skin color, gender, or ethnicity.

In a free society, every citizen gains a sense of himself as an individual, rather than developing a group or victim mentality. This leads to a sense of individual responsibility and personal pride, making skin color irrelevant. Racism will endure until we stop thinking in terms of groups and begin thinking in terms of individual liberty.

Nobody with any sense believes Dr. Paul is a racist. Smear tactics are weapons of people who are either ignorant or too lazy to debate issues and ideas.
I wish Dr. Paul wouldn't associate his name with MLK because he was a known plaguarist. Forget the womanizing and the socialism. He was a fake.
On the other hand, Dr. Paul is the genuine article. He is a person of absolute integrity. He needs no association with MLK to prove he's no racist.

I have come to the conclusion

that unless I can say something postive about a topic, I won't offer an opinion.

Therefore, I will not comment on this topic, nor will I give my opinion on it either.

Sorry, but this makes no sense

Ron Paul believes in freedom and equal rights for all.

MLK was honorable in fighting against the unequal treatment of blacks by government, but he was also a statist who pushed for more government intervention in our lives. MLK's focus was on equality, not on freedom so the result was things like the taking away of property rights of millions of Americans .

Not only was MLK a womanizer, but he was essentially a socialist.

Equating Ron Paul and MLK is offensive to me.

This may not be deliberate pandering but it sure could be seen as such. This statement about the legacy of freedom from MLK is just absurd and cannot be supported by history.

I have contributed over $1,000 to Ron Paul (considering I get $1,040 per month from social security this is large for me) but there is no way I will participate in the January 21 fund raiser linked to MLK. These mass donation days are political statements because if we want to donate we can do it anytime, so I think linking Ron Paul and MLK is a big, big mistake.

"The deepest sin against the human mind is to believe things without evidence." Thomas H. Huxley

I never thought it was

I never thought it was totally logical either, but let's remember that people are complete imbeciles. They think MLK=freedom fighter. That's it. As a marketing thing, it could be quite effective. And it shows that RP and his supporters have a clear conscience with regard to the racism BS.

Anyway, it's a done deal, so why waste time comlaining?

Pls dontate to NH recount first!!!

Why can't the doc.........

express himself like this in a debate forum??? This is the kind of communication that people would respond to, not a lesson in Austrian economics!
