My final decision: Gary Johnson for President of the United States

After weeks of arguing with myself on whether to write-in Ron Paul or vote for Gary Johnson, I came to a decision I can live with.

Since I wanted my vote to count (in WA State), and since I wanted to send a message to the 2-party strangle-hold on the American political process, I concluded a vote for the Libertarians was the best option.

But in one last attempt to vote for Dr. Paul, I spoke with Washington State's Secretary of State office to see how they handle write-ins.

Even if a candidate registers here (which Dr. Paul didn't do), they will not even look at write-in names unless they feel they might affect the outcome of the election.

And even if they DO count them, they won't publish the actual names unless a write-in candidate were to miraculously win.

As much as I wanted to write in Dr. Paul, I felt it was more important to support a viable candidate, who was on the ballot in the most states, and who I liked well enough to vote for.

We all know Gary Johnson is not Ron Paul (but then who IS other than Dr. Paul himself?!).

But Johnson has said on more than than one occasion that his hero is Ron Paul (he said it again in the 3rd party dabates).

There is no doubt that the Libertarian Party would have welcomed Dr. Paul with open arms as their candidate.

Top that off with Ron having stated recently that Gary Johnson is a "wonderful candidate who everyone should take a look at."

So in the end, I felt the very best use of my vote (even after years of supporting the Ron Paul campaign with my money, time and effort), was to choose Gary Johnson.

Ever since seeing all the cheating done by the republicans this entire campaign season, I have promised that "I'll Remember In November" and remember I did.

Therefore...

Gary Johnson 2012!!!

I totally agree with this

If your write-in vote isn't going to be publicized, it's not a finger to the establishment, it's just a wasted vote. It makes sense to write in Ron Paul only in states where it is actually tabulated.

Take back the GOP and Restore America Now.

My thinking exactly Poor Richard

I gave up the personal satisfaction of writing in Dr. Paul for the greater good of trying to affect change in the American political pricess.

Ayn Rand would be incensed!

For Liberty and Justice

I will be voting for Gary, wearing my Ron Paul t-shirt.

Wear whatever you like, but

Wear whatever you like, but you may be turned away at the voting booth for wearing a political shirt. Has anyone done this before?

I'm working the election here

I'm working the election here in my county and yes, we were told anyone that tries to come in and vote wearing a political button or anything removable has to remove it and if it is a t-shirt, they will be turned away or asked to put on a jacket if they have one. I didn't like that at all. Why must freedom of speech stop while waiting in line to vote?

Right on Free_Range...I hear you...

I voted for GJ in my Campaign For Liberty shirt.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Interesting.

Good luck with that

I'm sure gary johnson strikes such fear in the hearts of the power/money elites that they would never flip his votes, shut down his precincts or lose ballots of his.

You know what?...No matter HOW I voted there will still be....

...plenty of people bitching about why I did what I did.

If anyone has a better idea for people in WA State, I'd sure like to hear it.

Maybe not voting at all would have made everyone happy.

Santa Clause is a write-in Candidate in Washington

Ron Paul is not an "Official Write-in Candidate For President" in Washington but Santa Claus is. Apparently Santa wants to be president at this time enough to fill out the simple form that Washington requires. Santa's name is at the bottom of page 2 on this document from the Washington Secretary of State's web page: http://www.sos.wa.gov/_assets/elections/2012PresidentVicePre...

Read this important information in the heading of that document: "Votes for an individual write-in candidate will not be tallied by name unless the total number of write-in votes cast exceeds the votes cast for the top vote getter"

It is clear that there will be no way to tell in the final total of votes if a Washington resident voted for Ron Paul, Santa Claus, or one of the other 30 write-in candidates . . .

and santa will odds are get more votes than gary

Maybe we should push for santa to win so everyone can finally WAKE UP and realize this is all a sham.

RONonymous - Great point about Santa Claus. In fact, Santa...

...will be counted before Ron Paul in Washington State.

It's a FARCE here which is why I voted like I did.

Sure my heart wanted to write-in Dr. Paul but in the scheme of things it would have only been for personal gratification - not to send a message to the rotted 2-party system.

I had to finally face up to the reality that we LOST - Even though we were cheated out of it.

So the best way to punish the RNC/GOP for their deeds is to do something that COUNTS - without actually going as far as to vote for Obama and his thieves.

Ron Paul on Gary Johnson and write-in voting

Ron Paul thinks you should take a look at Gary Johnson and that a write in vote will not have a major impact!

Watch him say it in this short video:

No use writing in Ron Paul

and in my state, I cant.

Gary Johnson for me!

Gary got a vote this week in Ohio

After voting for Ron Paul in the primaries, when it looked like he had lost his shot of getting the nomination after the Santorum-fest, I decided to get on board with GJ.

I went in for early voting. This year, GJ is the first choice listed on the Ohio ballot, prime real-estate for a libertarian. It was my first Presidential election, and I'm proud to say that I voted for someone I actually support. Same thing with Ron Paul in the primary. Now if only we could get more people to vote for people they support, and not just tweedle-dee over tweedle-dum...

Luke

GJ was polling at 10,6% recently in Ohio.
CNN showed a chart yesterday from early voting in Ohio and it showed 60% Obama 30% Romney so I guess GJ is getting 10% in early voting!

Thank you for voting GJ.

Regarding education...I bet you could trace the downfall...

...of the quality of education in the U.S. directly to the creation of the Department of Education - which should be abolished.

My belief is that their main goal is to make sure American students DON'T learn about the Constitution, our founders, the American Revolution, civics and the principles of liberty.

I'm not sure a candidate with the socialist agenda of Obama could have ever been elected president without the Dept of Education and their influence on teachers, young students, cirriculum and universities.

-Ron Paul

I'm voting for Gary Johnson in Ohio. No write-ins for RP here.

Since Ron Paul didn't apply as a write-in candidate in Ohio, writing him in is entirely meaningless. However, Gary Johnson is on the ballot, and votes for him will be counted. The Libertarian Party needs to get a certain percentage of the vote to retain ballot access, so the LP's candidate gets my vote this year.

I don't agree with Gary Johnson on 100% of the issues, but I don't agree with Ron Paul 100% of the time, either.

I feel I've opened a can of worms!

But I value every comment in response.

Many I can't agree with but I understand them.

After a few days have gone by I still feel alright about my choice.

What other choice did I have realistically other than not voting at all?

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Can of worms...It does seem that way, doesn't it?

A reminder to everyone getting so intense on this - remember we're all on the same side - for liberty!
These are not Romney or Obama supporters. These are our fellow patriots. I haven't yet decided if I'm writing in Ron Paul or voting one of the third parties on my ballot here in Wisconsin. Supposedly Ron Paul will count as a write-in, but because of this posting, I'm going to do some further digging. Thanks.

I just think we really need to try to soften some of our justified intensity to not turn off people to our Constitutional message. It's not over. Logically, calmly, explaining things seems to go much farther than a few tersely heated remarks, no matter that it goes against every grain in our bodies while talking to neo-cons and liberals alike.

This next quote I mean in regard to standing against the two-party system and the CRF, etc, no matter which 3rd party candidate (or Ron Paul write in) we vote for:
"We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." - Benjamin Franklin

Thank you Revolutionaries...

Your post truly lives up to your name.

Really good observations.

-Ron Paul

Thanks

:-)

for sure

Maybe a can of whip a**. just kidding. :) I am in the same boat as you. I wanted to write in Ron Paul, but in my area, it is all digital. I don't believe they even allow write ins here. So, my vote is for Gary as well, though I have many disagreements with him. You will never agree with any candidate 100 percent of the time, but you at least we agree with Gary Johnson about 70 to 80 percent of the time, maybe more. It's a hard decision, especially when the person you really put everything into ends up getting ripped off. I applaud you for your decision. :)

Goode is a neocon who supports the war on drugs and halting all immigration to America. He also supports military interventions. A point blank far worst candidate than GJ.... plus he sounds like the Judge from My Cousin Vinny

Debate Performance

I, too, was undecided as to whether I should stay home on election day, write in Ron Paul or vote GJ. If I hadn't already been leaning toward Gary Johnson, his performance in the third party debate earned my vote, and I have a feeling it will earn him many others as well. While I don't think he's as informed or enlightened as Dr. Paul (GJ supporters don't be offended; few people in politics are as well versed in history and economics as Ron Paul), I would argue that he did a better job making the case in a debate than I have seen Dr. Paul do... Perhaps because Paul tries to give too much supporting history and economic theory while Johnson seems to explain his philosophy in a more practical way that the average person can understand. Either way, I am now a Gary Johnson supporter. Thanks to those who have been working so hard to promote his message of liberty!

Unlearning and self-teaching since 2008. Thanks, Dr. Paul!

his debate performance won you over?

it couldn't have been that difficult to win over your vote if all it took was a micro 3rd party debate then. What would it take for you to vote for someone other than gary? Perhaps a buy one get one free coupon somewhere?

If that debate was able to win over votes we are losing more than I thought in this country.
