Opinion: "If Barry Goldwater was alive today, he would vote for Gary Johnson"

by Dee Dee Garcia Blase

Barry Goldwater, a Republican, was notorious for his visionary thinking that resembles Libertarian views today. If he were alive today, I believe he would vote for neither Mr. RomneyCare nor Mr. Obama Care — nay, he would vote for Gary Johnson.

Gary Johnson is running under the Libertarian Presidential ticket for 2012, and was a former long life Republican and the former Republican Governor of New Mexico.

Gary Johnson wants to end wars, and military members and their dependents are tired of wars. Indeed, military veterans have given a significant amount of their money to Ron Paul because Ron Paul has been a stalwart champion for ending the wars that began under George W. Bush. It is a known fact that Mitt Romney wants to increase our war and Defense budget by $2.1 trillion even though our military has not asked for that money. And in that regard, let it be known that Obama isn’t asking for a $2.1 trillion increase. Where is Romney going to get the money? From the tax payers of course.

Barry Goldwater Sr.

...is probably better understood by his son than you, LL. Please, somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Is it not true that Barry Goldwater Jr. was a very fervent supporter of Ron Paul and still is in his corner. Is it not true that he made it clear when he spoke at the "other" fest that he was not in any way endorsing Gary?

Is it not true that he recently endorsed Romney not because he liked his political stance but because he stood with Dr. Paul in trying to change the Republican Party from the inside?

Agree with that stance or not. That is not my point. My point is how dare LL post something implying that the political ideals and principles in the Goldwater family are better known by him than his son.

This post and its title should have been banned. To "use" someone who has served the country and was an early courageous voice for liberty in this way is a travesty. I ask that some of you join me in saying for anyone to "say" who a dead person would vote for and especially when his "living" son would definitely disagree is using the tactics of the most sinister, corrupt political strategists and the lying media.

I am sorry to once again cross you LL. But, seriously, think before you post.

Barry Goldwater Jr. endorsed Romney

Earlier during the primary season he did endorse Ron Paul.

I am not the author of this article.
What are you talking about?

The title comes from the author.
Do you want to go after this person or something?

Do you want to sue this person?

Why do you attack me for posting an article(opinion) I found on the internet from an Arizona newspaper?
Can you explain?

Yes, I Can Explain

You were the OP of the article. It is my feeling that you are not seeking out articles to educate, but rather articles to divide. Few people here, even Gary supporters, would have posted this article.

One can find anything they want now days on the internet to support their view. There are many well thought out articles. You have posted some. However to post this on this site is in poor taste. It is not an article that will win any converts to Gary...it only divides the Liberty Movement and I would have hoped you would recognize that. Perhaps you will be more selective in the future.

fonta

I Bumped Myself

...hoping someone will tell me if my tirade has merit or not as I was outraged by the OP and the title. I am equally enraged by the constant it is important that "we" vote for...when "he" can't vote. I just wish, LL, you would be more honest in the language you choose.

I have spent some time studying the Liberty Movement in Canada. You bring us no news of it. You don't even tell us how socialized medicine in Canada works out for you or if you have had difficulty finding decent employment due to the economy in Canada. How about the much talked about and still being worked on behind the scenes USA/Canada/Mexico amalgamation. Are you counting on it?

I just want to know why you are not working for liberty, gay rights, pot legalization in Canada and why you bring us no news of progress being made there and what you are doing in your country.

I am not in any way being disrespectful. However, it is no wonder that you seem to have no concept of some people here working locally
since you do not. Perhaps I am wrong and you are very active for liberty in Canada. Are there Canadian liberty blogs that you post as much on as here. If not, why?
Please share.

fonta

Totally!

Bumping you up for an answer to those obvious and rational questions. I too am tired of hearing who I should vote for from a foreigner and would love to know what is going on in Canada on the liberty side.

Blessings )o(

Thank You Maeve

And I would imagine that perhaps like me, you have been encouraged and heartened by the internationals who from time to time have come to this site because they saw hope in the Liberty Movement here for their countries. In all cases they indicated that they are just like us. They want to be able to raise their children in a peaceful world with opportunities, not entitlements.

It is for that reason that I fail to understand that a person who most likely would win the award for the most posts (40,000) never expresses what those brothers and sisters abroad express.

They hope that we will be successful and that it will eventuate in a worldwide movement. They speak in terms of support for us....because they want to have hope for their own countries.

I cannot understand anyone outside the US having any other goal. If one wants to live here...it seems anyone can. In Canada, right now, it is very easy to live on entitlements. Canada is in very bad shape and there is much work to do there for anyone who is truly and sincerely interested in liberty.

I can only assume that LL lives in some kind of virtual world and has found a life in the DP. I actually feel very sorry for him. I hope he wakes up to the fact that there is much work for liberty to do in Canada.

fonta

Exactly

I always appreciate hearing the support and admiration for what we are doing here. I love hearing that they are trying to emulate the liberty movement in their own countries. I feel for them when they tell us that things are bad there as we know they are here. I just don't appreciate being told what to do by those who have no stake in our game. Unlike you, however, I can't feel bad for LL. He's rude and nasty if you don't agree with him and he is divisive. That kind of "help" is what we don't need.

Blessings )o(

And What We Do Need

...is for people to realize that with the freedom of the internet (which we may not always have) there is responsibility. "To he whom much is given, much is expected."

Most people here understand that the real beauty of the internet is that we can self-educate and on a site like this we can share. But when the internet is "used" to find divisive articles ... erroneous articles...articles from sources that have an agenda and care not about truth...and then publish them in order to sway not inform, the internet becomes as irresponsible as mass media and political pundits. It can spread like wildfire. It can enslave to untruth.

It is entirely appropriate to have different political views; however when there is any agenda other than to learn the truth...Ron Paul taught us nothing. His legacy dies. I do not want that to happen.

Thank you for your responses. Many of us know that we are not going to like the next four years whatever happens. It is the time for all of us to become something higher than the media and the pundits and the irresponsible.

To me a good example is a recent response to something I said by Doggie Dog who is a Gary supporter. I quoted something Gary had said and he provided me with a later expansion on that comment that Gary had made. It did not change my vote. But I respected the civil manner and informative nature of the response. To me, that is what we all need to work on. Myself included. I get triggered!

fonta

and it STILL would not fix the rigged elections

LL - I understand that people outside the US are still hoping for a miracle here, but it matters not one whit who we vote for. The banksters will decide which candidate kisses booty the best and the media will tell the people that is who they voted for, and the people will accept it regardless of all evidence to the contrary in their world.
There are almost no signs here, Romney or Obama. No one is supporting either of these jugheads, and yet one will win. Hardcore, Idaho Republicans won't donate to Romney - "He's got more money than me, how dare he ask me to donate" is what one old man said.

Love or fear? Chose again with every breath.

my friend

It really matters if we vote for GJ on Nov 6th.

Judge Jim Gray:
“If we just get 5%... it will be the beginning of the end of the two party system.”

If the Libertarians can get over five percent of the popular vote, they will be entitled to matching federal funds (about $90 million) from the Federal Government, passing the threshold under the Federal Election Campaign Act.

We?

Please be honest with your words. You mean to say it matters who "you" vote for since you can't vote.

Blessings )o(

Ah, the Libertarians want my vote so they can get to the trough.

LL - I first voted for Ron Paul in 1988, because I always voted Libertarian. I paid no attention to what name was in the box, I just supported the Libertarian Party. They have been saying the same thing for 2 decades now, and still miss the mark. Why? Because eventually people who turned to them for change figure out they just want to be part of the corruption.
It is time for humanity to grow up and self rule. It begins by abstaining from the corruption used to enslave you.
I do admire your efforts for peace, as always!

Oh.....you can't. You're not an American citizen right? Stop trying to sway Americans from what's their opinion on what's best for them.

How do you know

How do you know I will not dress as deer cross the border and vote in a state that does not require ID to cast a vote?

4 years ago while crossing by car with my American girlfriend I made one mistake I took too many clothes and pairs of shoes with me while telling border guys I am going for a 3 week visit.
They searched everything took pics interrogated us for 2 hours and denied me entry saying to me "next time you will be detained for at least two weeks".
They took my fingerprints and photos as if I was some terrorist...my girlfriend was all in tears...

November 6th 2012 I voted for Dr.Ron Paul

On a more serious note Gary Johnson is my friend.
He follows me on Twitter and reads my posts here on the Daily Paul.

If I were Gary, I'd get a restraining order against you. Creepy obsession much?

I don't play, I commission the league.

He reads your posts here on the Daily Paul?

And he hasnt told you to knock it off yet? That you are driving away many potential GJ supporters with your oft ludicris, hostile, and paranoid posts and tactics?

I can't imagine him being ok with that, and if he was, wow, I don't believe I would consider his candidacy any further.

You do a lot of good LL, I like you, but your GJ work is embarrassing. I'm not saying stop campaigning for GJ, by all means do so if you feel it right, I understand your reasons and passion for doing so and why you go a little over the top sometimes, there's lives on the line... but still you need to tone it down a little if you want to be more effective. You are overly defensive and openly hostile to anyone who disagrees with you. You have given up trying to persuade people and have resorted to calling names and making up ridiculous conspiracy theories about long standing members somehow being Romney operatives and what not. You can allow others to disagree without being disagreeable. They are more likely to come around to your point of view later on when they realize you may have been right than if you berate them and make things up.
Extoll GJ's good virtues, acknowledge his weaknesses if brought up. If others disagree or feel the need to troll let them be, they're not going to help you anyway.
I'm sorry if this is a little harsh and I absolutely don't mean to tell you what to do, if that is how this is coming across. It's just meant as friendly advice. I'd hate to see so much effort and passion backfiring on you. Thanks LL.

(that deer joke was pretty funny btw, I can just picture it now, lol)

Thanks

I simply try to post quality material surrounding Gary Johnson/Judge Jim Gray campaign.
There is sadly not much coverage so the stuff I do find is not just limited but some articles are not well written or could be seen as in some way poorly written.

Why a few people here got offended by the above article is puzzling to me. It is an opinion piece by someone who believes that Golwater would vote for GJ if he was living at the present time.
What is offensive about it?

I just provide people here with information they would otherwise not being able to see.

9 people down-voted this -- not a big deal.
It will not stop me from doing what I am doing for at least the next 4 years up until victory in November 2016.

Enjoy your night!

understood

I'm not necessarily talking about this particular thread or set of comments, but more in general, the tone and rhetoric being used is often not very constructive or productive. And to be fair I do believe you receive a lot of unfair, hostile and over the top flack yourself which you deal with. I just believe you are more capable and disposed to take the high road than they are and not reply in kind. I believe you're better than that and can be an example to them.

As to why some people have downvoted this particular thread, which includes myself, I think it is due to the title: If Barry Goldwater was alive today, he would vote for Gary Johnson.

The article says "I believe" he would would vote GJ. Not "He would". Its a big difference. Declaring fact vs. informed speculation. I would probably change my down vote to upvote if you changed the title to "I believe if Barry Goldwater was alive today, he would vote for Gary Johnson."
Saying that "he would", not "I believe he would", is seen as deceptive, dishonest and manipulative. It shoots the chance for an open healthy discussion in the foot right off the bat, which makes it an uphill battle for yourself. Small things like that are the difference between whether people will listen to you or ignore you sometimes.

Thanks for reading and considering.
Good evening.

Thanks

I changed the headline to point out that it is just one persons opinion and not some written in stone fact that Goldwater would endorse GJ.

Here is the author's original headline (it does not include "I believe")
If Barry Goldwater was alive today, he would vote for Gary Johnson in Arizona.
