If you have $20,000 to blow, you can now get the most advanced consumer TV on the market.

LG has officially launched the very first TV to be sold as an "ultra HD" set.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) officially dubbed the next advancement in consumer video resolution as “Ultra HD” earlier this month. This moniker, or variations thereof — like “Ultra Definition” — have been used in PR literature from various early adopting companies, but this certification from the CEA will now make it a part of the entire industry’s vernacular.

Actually, not sure if it's

Actually, not sure if it's the most advanced consumer TV. On the market right now? Yes. Its display specifications state 3840×2160, which is minimum required for Ultra-HD.

However, check this 85 inch Sharp display which has native resolution of 7680x4320. It's just that it will not be on consumer market till......get this.......2020! Or the content supporting such resolution won't be ready till 2020. Something like that.

So if you want to watch re-inauguration of President Rand Paul live on that display, you can start buying up some gold now.

Seriously, these are the most ridiculous monstrosities. Apart from select criminals like Romney or Bernanke, who in their right mind has need for these ridiculous things? Who even knows what the state of this planet is going to be around 2020 after economic meltdown, during crazy warfares? Let alone worrying about 85 inch display of 7680x4320 resolution.

They should call 'em

"Wallscreens" like in Fahrenheit 451.

"Getting your second wallscreen is like having your family grow out all around you!"

What would the Founders do?

This TV

is kind of worthless because most television services and video game consoles only support up to 1080p at this time. Maybe you could use a PC with a nice graphics card, but that is pretty much it. I guess the TV would be future proof for a couple of years, but it will take awhile before a lot of video output devices support higher than 1080.

True, but the ability to

True, but the ability to upscale current 1080p content is quite appealing. Similarly, you can upscale your normal DVDs to 1080p if you have one of those newer Blu-Ray players.

Personally, I'm really interested in a large screen display using OLED technology. That would be hot!

That sounds like a wise use

That sounds like a wise use of 20 grand. /eyeroll

"The Real Crash" has a nice bit on TV's

In SChiff's latest book, he does a little history of TVs. The first color TV had like a four inch screen, only about two hours of available programming per week and cost the modern equivalent of $40,000 (cited by memory, the facts are of similar scale)

I'll be getting my 84 inch LG for Superbowl 57 to be sure!

Currently consuming: Gatto: "Underground history of education..", FDR; Wii U; NEP Football

A little bit bigger please!

Gee, if they make them somewhat bigger, you could put it out in your back yard, get the family in the car, and walla! It would be just like the old days of going to the Drive In Movies ( many here probably don't know about those ), except for the quality of the slime and sludge that is on the airwaves now!

Me personally, I threw my TV out 21 years ago and it was one of the best things I ever did!

84" TV?

Seriously, there's a point where TV's could be too big and I'm sure 84" inches is close to it.

I just move my monitor closer

it's like having an 84 inch screen in my field of vision for 1% of the cost.

Ha TV... good memories.

Great!

I like my propaganda and brainwashing the size of a wall.

There's no 4K content out so

There's no 4K content out so its not really a big deal, it will just upconvert 1080p content to look a little better that's all. Come on 4K Blu Ray where are you at? This could mean a 2013 4k Blu ray announcement in january @ CES?

Dear Santa

Be great for the mountain scenes lol

LoL ... Projection and ONLY

LoL ... Projection and ONLY projection is the display of the future. Who needs a bulky picture frame for a wall? Hardy har har.... For a couple of years, I've been using a micro projector just fine. Granted, the luminosity needs increasing, but micro projectors are serviceable even now in darker environments. One day, we'll have interactive 3-D displays (holograms) based on projection.

If you need one of these, you

If you need one of these, you spend way too much time in front of the TV.

When The Crash Comes, Anyone With $20,000 In Gold or Silver..

Could buy just about anything they need or want...Is it better to have $20 grand now to buy this HD TV or put the $20 grand in silver or Gold and wait to use it later for a multitude of wants?

I can wait to buy these new and luxurious items later. Right now there is a dollar crisis coming (train wreck)..

Save up for it now and buy it later. In the meantime put your money in gold, silver, storable foods, water and water filters, guns and ammo.

If you have all the essential items necessary to withstand the coming global crash then later you will have the wherewith all to buy an 84 inch Ultra HD TV..

Capitalism works.... now if they'll just legalize it in more areas.

Horrible news for Faux.

Greta Van Susteren and Ann Coulter will have to retreat to radio, because nobody wants to see them in THAT much detail.

I don't play, I commission the league.

Isn't That The Truth!

lol..

Coming soon to the 1%.
