Cloud Atlas: The Wachowski Siblings have created a masterpiece

The Wachowski brothers have done some of the best anti-authoritarian, pro-search-for-truth movies ever done with the likes of V for Vendetta and the Matrix. Cloud Atlas was awesome both from a philosophical level as well as for pure entertainment value.

You will come away with a renewed passion to stand for truth.

Very fine movie.

It will indeed take me a second viewing to unravel all the links in the story lines that got stuffed in throughout the movie. So many different relations that its hard to see them all in one time through. One thing that amazed me was that the top actors had 5-6 roles each and it was almost impossible to pick a couple of them out.

This movie is not for someone who doesnt like thinking. Its not your standard brain dribble movie. I can see those who have trouble following complex stories etc as simply not liking this movie.

The topics covered certainly range but I think the one that stands out the most is that even though you are a single person, you can still make a difference in the world and have an effect regardless of how small it may or may not be.

"What is an ocean, but the sum of its drops?"

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

Correct! This is NOT a film

for the average mind. A lady friend of mine saw it last night. We both thought it was fantastic but also agreed we need to see it again being so complex (compared to most films). 4 1/2 stars!

Liberty is on the march, tyranny is on the run!

I'm intrigued

1) If y'all think it's good, I sure as hell will check it out.

2) Had no clue that Lana had become a MTF (male-to-female). Looks like it went well for her. :)

Saw it today

It is good. It is also 3 hours long. In order to understand it fully, I think I'll need to see it again. With subtitles. I saw it at a theater that was built for vaudeville (The Somerville Theater). The acoustics are not the greatest, and considering some of the accents and dialects, in addition to the complexity of the story, it wasn't the easiest to understand.

Even so, it was very powerful, and touches upon something I think we intuitively understand, but has never been put into a movie.

All in all, I have to say bravo to the the Wachowskis for their incredible vision and talents.

It was indeed excellent!

I think a second viewing with your eyes on karma and the progression (or lack there of) of each soul would be fun...perhaps the ultimate assessment of the movie...Was karma portrayed as just and beneficial? Or was the suffering a bit random? I think i would have liked a little bit more of the former represented in this flick...BUT, that being said GREAT MOVIE....and not one the mainstream normally serves up.

One thing is for sure, and the eastern folks often admit this, reincarnation is not always good news ;)
(at least on first analysis)

Definitely helps to see it...

...a second time. I had the advantage of having read the book first, but even when reading the book it can be a bit of a challenge with the older English vocabulary used in the 1800's sea voyage story (I had a dictionary nearby!) and with the future 'pidgin' type dialect used in the post-apocalyptic Hawaii story. I don't think I knew what an 'amaneunsis' was until I read this book, although I probably should have. :)

I ordered the book.

The measure of a good movie to me is what kind of an impact is has on you in the days and weeks after you see it. Does it remain in your mind? Do you continue to discuss it with others who have seen it? What kind of an impact does it make on your life, and your decisions? Fiction and movies are powerful in that way because they provide metaphors and analogies for what you experience in your own life. Fiction brings up situations and scenarios that otherwise you might never encounter.

Love it when you post comments

Mr. Nystrom I salute you. There isn't a single website in the world that has kept me coming back literally "daily" for 5 years. Kudos to you and your creation brother.

Thank you friend

It makes me very happy to hear that.

I just got home from this

I just got home from this film. I'd have to say it's a bit over the top confusing; very hard to follow. Reading the book first, I'm sure, would help a lot.

Yep

I went yesterday-hard to follow

2 Chron 7:13-14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Establishment hates this movie???

I'm just curious if that may be the case as yahoo is touting this movie to be a failure, a flop.

I wanna see this movie in order to judge if it's worth getting behind. Lots of indicators say yes, but I gotta see it first.

Is it good in an Ellsworth

Is it good in an Ellsworth Toohey and Jules Fougler sense?

re: tom hanks and other actors being pro-obama

i think most actors want money to be spread out to the most people so that they can afford to buy a bunch of admissions and dvds of their movies.... a multi-millionaire will probably watch their movie once at most. in other words, for people in the tv/ movie business, being liberal is a career move.

it's a good idea to question these celebrities on key issues like the kill list, wars, collateral damage, patriot act, etc. when the chance presents itself, as in public Q and A's etc. also ask them what promises obama kept in his 4 years in office.

if it was Ron Paul vs. Obama in this election, being pro-obama would be more of a travesty, but it's kind of hard to blame people who are voting against Romney.

Long Time DP'er... YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!!

This is the best movie I have ever seen.

The film exposes the cycle of fear and illusion.

The Movie's theme is love conquers death by blessing those who choose the truth and cursing those who attempt to conquer truth.

this movie is the deepest movie that has been made to date, it directly applies to Ron Paul and this movement.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right. -Henry Ford

Not Brothers!

Please don't refer to them as brothers, Andy and Lana are brother and sister.

"People tend to associate anyone who looks and behaves differently with illegal or immoral activity." --Marilyn Manson

Correct.

Lana used to be "Larry". She had some surgery.

siblings?

is "siblings" a good compromise?

Michael Nystrom's picture

I had no idea

Thanks for the heads up. I changed the title to reflect the situation.

*off to do a little research*

No thanks to pro authoritarian Tom Hanks

And the permanent smirk he wears on his smug face.

He's a second rate actor anyway, despite his awards. It's like Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a rEVOLution before tomorrow morning." - Henry Ford

Disagreed.

Lord Stannis Baratheon, First of His Name, King of Andals, etc etc... disagrees. lol

I don't agree with Tom Hanks' politics, but he's a fine actor regardless. Just like Meryl Streep. She was (if not still) a big Obomba fan, but she's still my favorite actress. Woman can act, period. Her and Tom are two of America's best actors today. Tom doesn't compare with, say, Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis, but I've always enjoyed his performances.

That being said, I so wish actors would stay out of politics.

"There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man."- Varys

"Winter is coming."-House Stark

I harshly disagree with your opinion on Tom Hanks

He is one of the finest actors of our generation. The Jimmy Stewart of our time, just because he is pro-Obama doesnt mean his authoritarian.

he is as American as Apple Pie. He just hasnt been shown the light, as many democrats are caring people.

I think Tom is a very good

I think Tom is a very good actor. I refuse to let my perception of his political leanings color his acting abilities, in the same way I'd never be able to enjoy any comedians if I was constantly reminded of their political leanings. Frankly, I find typically "conservative" comedians a bore.

Michael Nystrom's picture

Hear hear!

I find it sad that people are so caught up in politics that they can't enjoy a movie (Cursed communist Hollywood!) or an actor (stinking liberal) because of preconceived barriers in their own minds.

I find that very sad. If this is their reality, and their attitudes towards actors, imagine how they feel towards their fellow citizens. They can't talk to, let alone stand, half the people in the country.

No wonder the country is in such a mess!

And here's an anime-style series Tom Hanks created

I just discovered this a few days ago. He said he lost his entire investment making this series, but the results are rather impressive.

.

wow

im not that stubborn, i'll

im not that stubborn, i'll watch a bootleg of it

To bad the statists

that star in the movie ruin it for me. I will no longer contribute to any movie Susan Sarandon is in.

Use your money wisely folks.

Buffet of liberal horse squeeze with a dash of conspiracy crap

Every liberal victim-based mind numbing technique is in this movie complete with the n-word.

It will get many Oscars. Frankly a couple actors in this movie deserve nominations for acting, but that's not why they will get the nomimnations.

It isn't just a (modern) liberal...

...reaction to be appalled at the philosophy espoused by the antagonists throughout the film: 'The weak are meat, and the strong do eat.'

This echoes through all six stories as the strong prey on the weak, and the weak discover their own strengths. The book and movie affirm that there are things that transcend mere tooth and claw survival of the fittest. It is very Platonic, pointing to Love, etc. as something in its own right, not just the physical here and now. As a Christian, this resonates very well with my metaphysical outlook.
