Electric wheel hub motor, can convert any car to a hybrid electric vehicle with a bolt on application, Check out the video

This is an interesting concept, any vehicle can be easily converted to an electric hybrid with this bolt on application. The estimated cost of $3,000, combined with the doubling of the gas millage puts it in the reach of the average person. Certainly more affordable than a Chevrolet Volt, with the added benefit of being able to move the parts to another car, if needed. Since most driving is less than 45MPH and short distance, this looks like a winner.

yes they are

But that doesn't change the fact. A lot of things are recyclable and or require special disposal but how many of said things actually are? Don't look only at what is written on paper but cognate on the realities of it.

I have worked with industrial lead acid and gel cell batteries and they as well as the new lithium batteries have their problems. And then to think of all the new regulations that we would face to "ensure" proper maintenance and disposal. Like I said. No Thanks.

Don't shoot the golden goose. I was in the motorcycle biz for near 30 years. In 84 Yamaha came out with one of the first "mass production turbo motorcycles". Motorcyclist prejudged and knocked the concept so severly that the technology developement to over come the flaws was shelved setting back a concept that could have been fixed and gone far.

Likewise, I saw many of the EV1's and didn't think much about them because I thought they'd be still around. Had no clue they were all gonna be rounded up and I thought I'd see them from here on all the time. NOT. You gotta ask yourself, "Why did GM recall ALL OF THEM (except one for a museum W/motor extracted), under the threat of force/law and CRUSH THEM?"

I used to believe what you do about electric cars also, but then I watched "Who killed the electric car?"

In that movie, once again, you'll see a lot of media mind control at play to make people think that ______________.

Also, I'm not really even an electric car advocate. As of now, with what is commonly available and inexpensive, I think methane with nitro injection is the way, until further advancements become available.

I like fuel cells also, but the problem is adequately containing the extremely high-pressure fuel material and then using it in an efficient way.

In my non-professional opinion, the future of most energy efficient vehicles is with hybrids and tweaked traditional fuel engines. Super high efficiencies are still possible and the way forward may be achieved using computer modeling of engines in evolutionary efficient engine simulations.

I admittedly do not know the pressure you speak of

But there are propane powered vehicles and natural gas powered vehicles that require pressurized holding tanks that are on the roads. The LP tanks that I am familiar with are pressured up to 225 PSI. I don't know how much higher the pressure would be for the operation of a fuel cell. But in all my experience with LP I have never seen a tank blow up, that I can recollect. I have on the other hand seen many batteries blow up.

I watched it already. There was no profitable market for an all-electric when GM made their car.

There was, and still is, no widespread infrastructure to support electrics, plus battery technology has not developed to be competitive (equal) to the performance of the traditional gas or Diesel engine driven vehicles.

Regarding shifting the source of pollution:

"While studies of the pollution-reducing ability of electric vehicles in California are quite favorable, they cannot be applied to the rest of the world as a whole. The truth is that when using electricity generated from dirty sources such as coal and oil, electric vehicles may actually create more of some pollutants than comparable internal combustion engine vehicles. A report by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) cited a German study that estimated the environmental impact of electric vehicles with two distinct energy mixes: one comprised of only 49% coal-fired electricity, and one comprised solely of coal-fired electricity [1]. The estimates provided by the study are given in table 1. Assuming that 49% of an electric vehicle's charging energy being derived from coal, the study found that electric vehicles would cause comparable levels of nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide to be emitted, and that sulfur oxide emissions would increase by a factor of 10 [1]. California is different, as referenced by my source. Most of the country isn't powered with nuclear, solar and wind. That's why there is no net gain with regard to cutting pollution. For the country to reach total clean energy status, could take generations.

I believe there were approx. 200 fully electric cars and all those involved, from the designers, engineers, factory workers were so upset because the car was practiaclly flawless!

They all loved it....no oil changes, no clutch, no transmission, ran quiet, 0-60 in about 12 seconds and you could laugh as you drove by the gas stations.

I did not know the EV1 had a range of 160 miles!

and a recharge time of about 8 hours. Given electric motors are about 90% efficient and gasoline motors are at 25%, it seems like a no brainer to go with electric. Its also interesting to note that the rail road uses electric motors, makes one wonder. Thanks for the comment and the link.

impractical.

As it is, most gasoline powered vehicles have at best a 400 mile range on a tank.

From someone who's done lots of cross country driving, a 400mile/tank range is a PITA.

160mile/charge range is a deal breaker.

I can drive from Louisiana to South Carolina or to northern Kentucky in 12-14 hours and I'd have to stop for gas three times counting the initial tank. (one way, a round trip is 5 stops with some gas left over)

If I was stuck with your 160mile/charge models, the same trips would take me 5-6 DAYS one way!! Certainly, I could get more driving done in a day if I were lucky enough to find charging stations at just the right spots. I could drive for 2.5 hours on a charge, then stop and charge for 8 hours, then drive 2.5 more hours and then call it a day. This could cut the trip down to 2-3 days instead of 5-6.

This is completely impractical.

Even shorter distance driving which is commonplace around here - to New Orleans, to Houston, to Shreveport, to Gulfport, Mobile, or the Florida pan handle - completely out of the question. A trip to Houston which takes me 3.5 hours, would now take me ALL DAY.

And for local driving, you are forgetting the not so small problem that batteries have called the "memory effect."

I drive 20-25 miles each day, one way, to get to work.

If I charged the car each leg of the trip, while at work, and while at home, my battery will eventually not be able to hold a full charge due to the memory effect.

Short trip driving would be the worst case use for this type of system as the memory effect would be greatly enhanced.

One would have to plan everything around the inconvenience of running till their battery was nearly empty, then being lucky enough to be near a means to charge it, then waiting 8 hours till get it filled up, and then going about your life.

And we didn't even get into the energy costs in making the battery, or in generating the electricity to charge it or all the components involved and the infrastructure needed.

Gasoline is king for a reason. Overall, it is highly efficient, and it is way more convenient and practical.

If you want to supplant gasoline, you'll have to solve ALL of those problems, not just emissions at the point of converting potential energy to motion.

The lithium Ion batteries don't have a memory effect

With the amount you drive, you are right, electric is totally impractical, but I think it would be a fit for someone as a second car short distance city commuter.

He said the system was designed for 40 mile range at 45 MPH or less and said that was the market they designed the system for. He also said that was within the 80% average, then went on to say, when on the interstate the electric was not used. It won't work for high speed expressways but for a second car commuter vehicle, inexpensive grocery getter, it looks ideal.

You are correct. However, while "street legal"...

That you can now buy. Average price, get ready, $10,000+. So it makes this a deal.

Anyways, if you got one of the other kits you need to rip out all non-essential running gear to make em lighter for range (engine, clutch, gear box, entire 3rd member, etc). Acceleration is great, range is around 100 miles and varies with load and speed, etc.

Just plug it in at night, regular out let and costs a fraction of gas.
