Americans Aged 18-29 Have a More Favorable View Towards Socialism Than Capitalism

A recent Pew poll showed that young people IN THE UNITED STATES view socialism more favorably than capitalism.

You can view the charts here by age category:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-11-01/americans-aged-18-2...

What do you think are some of the reasons for the "socialization of America's youth"?

Here are some of my guesses:

-constant bombardment of anti capitalistic messages from the Main Stream Media & public schools;

-growing up with government programs like social security, pell grants & unemployment insurance;

-growing up In a cashless/credit card (debt based) society where they don't see the value of things in tangible exchanges;

-child labor laws and regulations that prevent kids from working and running lemonade stands in their formative years and the futility of even trying to work your way through an expensive debt financed 4 year college program;

-growing up with out the threat or recent memory of the harm done to the world by the German Socialst party, the NAZIs and Communist Russia;

-a lack of understanding of history and economics;

-the financial crisis of 2008 ad the anti capitalist responses (Michael Moore's "capitalism a love story", occupy wall street
movement) and the massive government response;

-Federal Reserve quantitative easing, stimulus and bailouts that supposedly "saved us"; and

-president obamas frequent socialist remarks-"spread the wealth around", "free markets don't work,never have", "you didn't build that" "millionaires and billionaires need to pay their 'fair share'"

History does progress

History does progress linearly in many ways.

On the social issues, especially.

"Progress" is subjective

Read Karl Popper's "The Poverty of Historicism" to see why "historical laws" such as linear progress are intellectually empty dangerous.

"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself." - Thomas Jefferson

So many possibilities

Having lived in China, people have no clue what a society without human rights will do to them. Entire villages disappear overnight when the communists are in control.
Second, kids have no idea what the basic definitions of capitalism, fascism, and communism are. The younger generation looks at the USA and labels it Capitalism when it is really fascism, heading towards socialism along the spectrum from private ownership to public ownership. Most people simply haven't been taught how to think within political frameworks or economic frameworks.

Public schools are to blame

If you want a nation of socialists, you educate them to grow up to be socialists. That way, they put the shackles on themselves and you'll never see them put up a fight.

22 yr old here

(IMHO) i believe the reason why my age group favors socialism over capitalism is because capitalism seems like the "cruelest" of the two...it is the more darwinian. People my age (and i believe every generation before us before they "grew up"/went into the real world) believes in helping each other out, and pure capitalism is unfortunately the opposite. Most people believe that through a "sharing the wealth" system everyone will be taken care of and they remain optimistic about changing the system. IMO it is not reason 1, 4, 5, 6

Jury Nullification is a power of the last resort against tyranny.

Capitalism more cruel

The fact that capitalism seems more cruel to most young people is a testament to their ignorance. Capitalism is just the removal of the state as an omnipotent provider. Living in a capitalist society does not magically eliminate the goodness of good people. Sharing the wealth does happen in a capitalist society but it is done through voluntary giving rather than coercion. And because a capitalist society produces a much better outcome (in terms of health, wealth, security, literally everything) compared to a socialist society, a capitalist society is actually the kinder one of the two.

Please visit my site for more information about my libertarian book. Thanks!

"a capitalist society is

"a capitalist society is actually the kinder one of the two." to those who can play the game.Those who cannot are sadly left in the sidelines(the sick, mentally deficient, etc.) and if you want to provide help for them then you got a socialist program once again.

Jury Nullification is a power of the last resort against tyranny.

Seems a bizarre mixture of culture

Where on the one hand young people talk about fairness and sharing the wealth, yet I don't see them objecting to Tiger Woods making millions of dollars. Why shouldn't I make the same money as any other professional athlete if everything should be shared? Do you value individual excellence or forced sharing of wealth? Quite a dichotomy our youth seem to embrace.

Ties perfectly into the hypocrisy of limosine liberals and

champagne socialists. Its ok for them to be rich but no one else because they understand the poor and have the answers for them

Ofcourse they do... they are

Ofcourse they do... they are hit with it from the government run schools at age 5. Ofcourse they will have a more favorable view.. until they get old enough and go out and work hard and see how much money government steals from their checks every week to give to some sap who won't work. Then their views change.

Socialism is not the problem

What we libertarians oppose is not socialism but corporatism. There are two types of socialism one statist and the other libertarian. Socialism naturally emerges when we move against the state capitalism that we have today.
I suggest going to C4SS.org/ and access the audiobook version of Markets not Capitalism.
Then listen to Benjamin R Tucker(1886) State Socialism and Anarchism: How far they agree and where they differ and then listen to Brad Spangler's Market Anarchism as Stigmergic Socialism. The libertarian Spangler ends by saying 'GET OVER it WE ARE ALL SOCIALISTS'!
There are many arguments to support Tucker and Spangler but I stop here.
If you want to read Tucker's argument access www.panarchy.org/tucker/state.socialism.html

socialism is the problem..

socialism is the problem.. what we are seeing today in western Europe and the US is western Socialism on it's death bed. Because all the promised retirements etc. medical care etc. can not be paid for. Just a matter of a few more years and it will all collapse.

Socialism or Fascism?

The problem is more like fascism than socialism.

Ed Rombach

Lol

I love watching ignorant leftist trendies (Occutards) try to defend stuff they dont have the slightest clue about.

Go back to your DailyKos..

Huh?

I don't get your drift.

Ed Rombach

honestly... what is there? a

honestly... what is there? a hairs difference?

socialism via state coercion

socialism via state coercion is the problem.

There is no problem if a bunch of people decide to get together and live under a form of socialism. No problem at all so long as it is voluntary and those who don't want to participate don't have to.

Exactly!

In this sense True Socialism can only exist within True Free Market Capitalism, that is, as one of its possibilities. So in this sense for example expression Libertarian Socialist would not be a contradiction in terms even if many in DP have in the past said that it is. In this definition libertarian would state the Liberty principle in general level and Socialist would state one's own preference of lifestyle within that Libertarian society or system.

"Air is the very substance of our freedom, the substance of superhuman joy....aerial joy is freedom."--Gaston Bachelard--

If people want to work together and pool their resources

voluntarily, they are welcome to it. The issue becomes when they use government to force their utopia on the rest of us because they need your money or services for it to work.

That was exactly my point.

That was exactly my point.

Socialism is the answer

It is the answer to our problems. Under socialism the people start to take back the commons and establish property rights in their common heritage the land. Socialism means we establish our communities that are sustainable in the commons. It means the right to own property and trade it. It would solve resource allocation and pollution problems. When we owners and entrepreneurs our self esteem soar and alienation bye bye...

I just want to say one more thing in reply: I believe in property rights and self ownership as much as anyone here. Really. I have read Mises Human Action and Rothbard extensively.

I hope this is not the Romney corner. Ron Paul specifically condemns CORPORATISM. The left/right split is a con game. Read Rothbard.

shisaracyndi

If you have read Mises

then you know he consider socialism basically the same as communism. And neither is compatible with private property rights. So which human beings do you consider smart and honest enough to "plan" the economy and decide how the rest of us should live? And why should the rest of us trust your choices?

Looks like quite a few bought "the anti capitalist mentality"

today on amazon as the book now ranks 77,000 up from 200,000 earlier today before the book was mentioned on the Daily Paul

My observation - because you can't miss what you don't know.

They have not lived long enough to know or understand otherwise.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

I think it has to do with

I think it has to do with what the common person thinks is capitalism vs. socialism.

Technically, we are all socialist. Any kind of government is a violation of a free market.

Back to the original point, a lot of people probably feel that this crony capitalism is what capitalism really is. Of course, anyone SHOULD reject that kind of system.

Socialism, though, doesn't really avoid that system. Socialism in America is basically the system as it is, with more handouts to the poor and middle-class to keep them happy. Or it is gearing the system to serve the unions or social interests vs. corporate interests.

I saw in a 1/2 hr. DVD documentary

"Overview of America" by the John Birch Society that mostly everyone believes in capitalism. The difference in a socialist or communist country vs. a free country is OWNERSHIP of the capitol. If individuals own and control it, we would call that free enterprise. Communism is more honest because they both own and control it whereas fascism is more subtle by controlling it and letting the "owners" foot the bill - investing, work hard believing they own it - but if they don't pay their taxes or stay current on some business regulations, they're in trouble. So technically since we are regulated within an inch of our lives, America doesn't truly have free enterprise anymore.

The entire documentary is excellent, from free markets to political systems-very concisely defined in understandable terms. I highly recommend passing it on to those in that age category.

im sure the poll was conducted with people with no internet

most people from that age understand free markets vs socialism

I'm not so sure about that -

While I wish I could agree with you, I think it is important to remember that elements of Canadian and European political culture are very attractive to what may some-day be called the OWS generation. For the educated/internet surfing youth, Europe is closer than it ever has been. Germany is home to the pirate party, so it's not all bleak.

As I like to bridge the gap now and then between my two favorite comment boards, consider the readership and slant of a post like this -

http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/12kwl9/american_re...

Reddit is, well arguably gamed as all large media is, also justifiably seen as left of Obama, while mostly being for him as well. It is also populated/viewed by at least some million(s) of younger, mostly male, Americans, who are not only on the internet, but actively so.

Our system of government is fascism not capitalism...

I firmly believe that fascism is the worst modern form of government. The collusion between big business and government has only strengthened the argument of socialists. Meanwhile, laissez-faire capitalism has never been fully realized. The success of early America offered a glimpse, but that was soon quelled by the desire of government to usurp more and more power from the People.

What to do?

#1 would be to stop donating money to the Republican Party and focus on individual organizations and candidates.

What are conservatives and libertarians to do? If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll notice that the political football game isn’t helping this trend in any way. Fox’s Sean Hannity couldn’t teach a free market principle if his life depended on it. Yesterday, he was busy calling Hurricane Sandy ‘Obama’s Katrina.’

And the politicians, themselves? Minus a few individual exceptions, It can be objectively argued that Republicans have expanded the size of government far greater than Democrats ever have–factoring out Obamacare. (This doesn’t even take into account military spending. Has Senator McCain ever heard of a war he didn’t want to go in debt to fight?)
