Are you ready?

With Katrina still in the minds of many and now Sandy which is looking to be a repeat to a degree... I wanted to ask this question.

Are you really ready? Do you practice what you preach? If you believe that people should be independent and not rely on government during hard times like this (or anytime) then I ask.

How long could you realistically last without trips to the store for anything.

On hand I have about 2 weeks worth of food and stored at another spot I have a years worth of food for one person and running water on the location. It would be hard to get to in an emergency but I have two weeks worth of supplies to get me there.

What about you and your family?

i'd only last a couple weeks.

if that. many in my family are totally unprepared. that will hurt me, i'm not rolling in cash. will be tough to feed everyone.
this was a great wake up call for me.
thought i was better prepared than i am.
thankfully i have a little time to correct that.

Get busy man. It's going to get worse before it gets better

I think.

Good luck working on your family. I've gotten my mom to buy a years worth of food and while she is slowly moving on other issues, she is making progress.

The rest of my family is harder.. They all have good jobs so I'm working on them from an emergency and peaceful mind standpoint.

It's a wonderful feeling knowing that if pretty much anything happens that you'll have food and supplies for a year.

Beans and rice. Cheap and

Beans and rice. Cheap and easy to buy enough to last you a good long time. I am so poor it isn't even funny, but I spend an extra dollar or two when I go food shopping to put something in my stock pile. Dollar stores offer cheap canned goods etc. The trick is to collect it over time, not all at once, so you don't go broke while you're doing it.

that is the bulk

of my food stash. if i were on my own i'd probably be good for a couple months. my nearby family surprised me this past week with their total lack of preparedness. i will have more than just my mouth to feed, that will be my problem. can't turn family away just because they laugh at me.

Glad you brought up the beans and rice bit.

Rice is around $14 to $25 per 50lb bag. I think most everyone, even if you're really poor, can buy enough for not just you but the rest of your family without them knowing of it.

I've spoken with my mom about doing this for the whole family because we know we're not about to turn family away.

Those two items are also great SHTF barter products. Buy them cheaply now and trade them for labor, silver or other items that you need in a pinch.

I have about two months worth

I have about two months worth of food and over the counter medical supplies. Lots of trees and downed wood in the area for a fire, river across the street for emergency water, bleach to purify it, a natural spring down the road if I need it, candles, matches, etc. I'm ready for a short term disaster. Now, if the SHTF and I have to go a year or so I will run into problems. Still collecting stuff toward that end though.

Good for you on being prepared!
