California voter checking

California voter checking in...I voted no on 37. I don't want the government getting involved with food labeling anymore than they already our. I can do my own research, thank you very much.

Then you should eat

drain cleaner and put yourself out of our misery... Not much difference than GMO food...

If someone put a gun to your head and forced you to eat a GMO food product or to swallow drain cleaner, are you telling me you would be ambivalent?

Your comment deflects my

Your comment deflects my argument. Why can't I, as an individual, just choose not to eat GMOs. There's also some arguments that they aren't as bad as they seem to be:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/07/genetically-modifie...

At the very least, it seems inconclusive. And even if it is conclusive, great, I won't eat it anymore. I don't need a law to tell me that.

There are many laws we "don't

There are many laws we "don't need"!
Deflection? Perhaps, but wouldn't you like to know if your food contains drain cleaner?! I think so... Or does it require a 'law' to forbid that as a content?

I don't believe that

I don't think California chose to have GMO not labeled. I think it was rigged. Duhh.

I agree

I'm in LA. This is not even a political question.

Absolutely...

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, in my psyche that can find segue into any belief that this was anything but rigged...nothing. Given that this was California, a crunchy granola, crystal-packin' mama, hippy anti-establishment, militant environmentalist, kinda place in all of my experiences in life, and absolutely no public "downside" existed to this legislation, and given that no ethereal debate of "freedom" and "liberty" in a free-market system was engendered or even possible...and with all of this attached to my full understanding and belief's concerning black box voting...I'm with you on this one.

Wha? .....hey....who stole my country?

Not everyone here is a

Not everyone here is a granola burning hippy. The vast majority of people here are Obomba loving, reality TV watching, do as your told ignoramuses. So when the Monsanto sponsored propaganda was broadcast on boobus, a good portion of voters responded accordingly.

Solutions

1. Get rid of all food subsidies: Because of laws, it is cheaper to ship a jar of apples from China than to pick apples from your own trees.

2. Grant citizens Food Freedom of Choice. Monsanto is afraid of competition. Allow the citizens freedom to grow and sell their own food without penalty. By allowing innovation and opportunity for each individual, we can topple Monsanto.

3. No patents on food. You cannot dump garbage in your neighbors yard without penalty yet Monsanto can dump polluted pollen all over the communities and the President says we must pay Monsanto a royalty.

J Salatin is amazing. I first

J Salatin is amazing. I first heard of him in the back of Rand's new book. Salatin is definetly on our side, and is a small farmer, pushing people to re-think their food supply and buy local. He will turn down sales and tell people, "You live too far away to buy my goods, buy local" Check him out anybody that reads and/or is interested in small farmers.

*Wisconsin Constitution* Article I, Section 25 "The people have the right to keep and bear arms for security, defense, hunting, recreation or any other law-abiding purpose"

i thought it would be passed.

i'm pleasantly surprised. :)

This was the only election that really mattered to me... UGH

How sad... we're all doomed : /

Science, free markets and Sanity won.

California is like a broken clock...I guess.

Well said

GMO foods are a free-market and education issue. We need to make our food choices on our own, and a smart company will proudly advertise its lack of GMO ingredients without the need for government INTERVENTION.

Liberty is hard for some people to understand.

You can not put non-GMO on any label,

Monsanto wants it this way. They will not advertise for GMO's and no one is allowed to advertise non-gmo products. For them ignorance is bliss, while the sheep die eating GMO's

Surviving the killing fields of Minnesota

Todays brainwashing: GMO's are safe

They will? GMOs have been out

They will? GMO foods have been on the market for 10+ years now and I haven't seen a single "GMO-Free" label.

Whole Foods advertises that their whole store is GMO free and investigators have found it to be a total lie. There are definitely GMOs in Whole Foods.

There is absolutely no free market, informed decision making without required labeling of GMOs. Period.

Ya know.. I originally thought GMO's were illegal in California

to begin with.

I will have to find another place to buy food that's non-gmo now.

Awareness

At least they raised awareness about this issue. I did not know how harmful this modified corn is for my health. Very grateful to all the people that helped raise awareness about GMOs.

There was no notice when regular corn was changed to Monsanto "pseudo-corn". Free markets are OK but there is a point when a merchant is being deceitful. It is similar case to 'watered down milk'. Again, everyone is free to produce, sell, and choose whatever food or medicine they want. If the definition of 'freedom' includes to be sneaky and untruthful about a commercial relationship then it is our freedom to request food labeling.

Forget About California

Californians didn't like Prop 37, but they apparently liked the sales and income tax increases of Prop 30 which passed. I guess they believe sticking it to the rich will help the state raise an extra $6 billion per year, but it never seems to work out that way. The state still refuses to cut any spending so we'll just wait for future financial market reality to do it instead.

I think that Brown has

I think that Brown has already cut 8 billion/year in spending.

CAlifornia taxes at about 8% of its GDP. States that are famous for their low taxes, like Texas and Florida, tax at 8% and 10% respectively. So to call for higher taxes does seem reasonable.

I See Your Point

...but taxes are not tied to GDP. The trend is for tax rates to continue higher regardless of what the GDP happens to be. The same with spending; hence the budget crises when the inevitable unprepared for recession or depression strikes.

Of course tax income is tied

Of course tax income is tied to GDP. GDP is a measure of the economy, and the better the economy, the more taxes will be collected as a percentage of it. That is why US tax rates tend to remain so stable over a term of presidency.

Spending does tend to climb more than GDP climbs.

NH has no sales tax.

Somehow the world is still turning. Could you check on that for us?

New Hampshire had a GDP in

New Hampshire had a GDP in 2010 of 62 billion. It collected revenues of 6.8 billion. That is 11% of GDP.

Do you think just because a tax is not an INCOME tax you do not pay it?

No, just a sales tax doesn't get paid per my comment
