RIP Judah Folkman (not OT)Submitted by DeBosco on Tue, 01/15/2008 - 20:39
Dr Judah Folkman died yesterday. He was a brilliant medical researcher who discovered the principle of angiogenesis, that cancer tumors recruit their own blood supply. He further found that the body creates inhibitors that block angiogenesis and that this starves the tumor. He found that, by synthesizing these angiogenesis inhibitors, he could convert cancer to a chronic and manageable disease. His research has implications not only for cancer treatment but also for rheumatoid arthritis, macular degeneration, endometriosis, and a host of other diseases. It is a pity that the Nobel committee never recognized his revolutionary work.
Beyond that, he was a gentle, generous, humble, and compassionate man.
What does this have to do with Ron Paul? Well, for years Dr Folkman was mocked for his work, was told he was "studying dirt" and was treated as a pariah by the medical establishment. But he was undaunted, persisted in what he knew was true, and lived to see his work proved correct. He has inspired a generation of cancer researchers and his work has spawned a host of cancer treatments that show promise of holding cancer at bay with few, if any, side effects.
Drs Folkman and Paul are two of my heroes: brave men who persist in the face of mockery and scorn, confident in the knowledge that They Are Right! And that history will be their witness.
