Big trouble at Dominican Republic

We need your prayers at the Dominican Republic, our government has gone full repression mode. They are killing people unarmed and if you protest against the president or his ministers the police can shoot you and have almost no consequence for the killer.
Last week the congress approved raise in taxes to cover the huge deficit the goverment created and they don't want to cut their expenses but lay the all the cost on the poor.
And now there is a law project to ban the disent against the president, vicepresident, members of congress and supreme court judges.

It's a sad week in this country.

Sadly, the vast majority of Americans want to implement

just that sort of system here. I don't think we'll be of much help to you.

You see, there is a very large contingent of stupid people here.

They WANT to see anyone who disagrees with them, especially if someone disagrees with the government - simply "disappeared."

We live in bad times. And it will only get worse.

Dominicans are more free than Americans

Nuria has a TV show and is free to report it as she sees it, unlike our dumbed down TV shows. Bravo to her. Things have been changing in the DR. Good luck maintaining freedom.

If you see something, say something, the government is listening.

Dominicans are not more free than Americans

Dominicans are not more free than Americans but that is not saying much.

For one they lose power daily, they are mostly poor and have great wealth disparity, they have an oligarchical society, they have constant government intrusion as well as massive corruption, you can't drive on many roads without police/military roadblocks and their police will stop you for bribes, most "neighborhoods" are comprised of houses that are more like compounds with high walls and guards with guns, they are very racist favoring white/light skin. They are often afraid of their own people and they are on an island bordering Haiti which is even poorer and has flooded their neighbor with refugees from the recent hurricane and horrendous earthquake.

I hope they can keep what freedoms they have and expand on them but there is one very important thing most of them don't have and that is a gun for protection.

History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.

Can you post some news links? I only found this in NYT

About a medical student killed in a protest. I have little doubt there is much more to it and you could help by providing some good links which you feel actually do the situation justice.

PS, I have some relatives planning on visiting in a week. Is the situation pretty wide spread? How much might it affect tourists, etc. at this point?

Dominican Congress Moving in Wrong Direction on Freedom of Expre

A bill is working its way through the legislative branch of the Dominican Republic that will severely restrict freedom of expression — and by extension — press freedom.

According to the InterAmerican Press Association (SIP in Spanish), the proposed bill is a series of amendments to the criminal code of the DR. One of the changes will make publishing or airing offensive expressions against the President and the Vice President, senators, congressmen, judges, election officials or the attorney general a criminal offense with imprisonment of two to three years and large financial penalties.

Trouble blows up in Costa Rica

Meanwhile, trouble blows up in Costa Rica over forced introduction of GMO seeds in the country.

Agricultural community in Costa Rica makes it clear that they will NOT be taking it lying down, regarding encroachment of Genetically Modified corn by Fascists Monsanto.

Immoral funding of Military Industrial Complex by Federal Reserve and US taxation system must stop!!!! End illegal/unconstitutional wars! Preserve US currency!

Thanks for your support. We

Thanks for your support. We appretiate it very much.

Thank you for making us aware.

Now that I am, I will be watching this situation more closely. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

It will get alot worse, I would advise

getting to an area that is remote, but also has self sufficient can do people for neighbors. You will need each other for sure

Here in the States - small towns will be in high demand as destinations for those leaving the out of control & unsafe cities.

I live in such a place, and neighbors all help one another in every-way imaginable. Bartering is becoming the way of life here, and everyone - man , woman and most kids can shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 75 yards. I have been to many other small towns in other states etc and it is the same there. A shift and awakening is definitely underway.

Keep your spirits up and never ever give up Hope!

My heart aches for you, djth, and for the people

of the Dominican Republic, as it aches for my own country and our people. Many prayers going out to the people of the DR from the American Patriots. We understand what is happening and know the time comes when only God can put a stop to the insanity.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May He give you peace. Amen.

Once again military dictatorship

raises it's head in the DR. I'm sorry for you friend.

Most of those who think so actually don't and most of those who think sew actually rip.

Run to the high grounds and make your stand there. Hopefully, you will get help from your neighbors.

Sounds like your government is on the ropes. There will be not much left to steal and then they will leave imo.

I've been a big 'move to another country' proponent the last couple years. I do have a property outside of the US and love it there....but as the world devolves into chaos, who knows what could happen.

Thanks for posting that link. A fascinating couple of hours!

over the next few years as

over the next few years as "global austerity"(i'm not arguing the merits of it btw) begins to take hold and civil unrest grows globally, calls for IMF/World Bank/UN intervention will mount and the apparatus of global governance will transform into global government in order to quell the crisis.

at least that's one scenario I can see playing out
