Why Dell Asks for SSN
It's wise to be cautious about sharing your social security number or any other personal information. Dell Financial Services takes the privacy and security of our customers' information very seriously and we don't ask for information unless we absolutely need it to offer you financing in the quickest and most efficient manner.

We require you to furnish your social security number because it's required by law. Under the USA Patriot Act of 2001, we're required to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

... Ahh safety and security for the low low price of a little liberty ( What a deal !!! )

Social Security Number: "For tax purposes only." It is the law.

"For tax purposes only" was printed on each new Social Security card through the 1960s.

A Social Security Number (SSN) is used by employers and employees for the purpose of reporting individual employee earnings for tax purposes only.

If you buy cash instead of financing does Dell still require your SSN?

If you must finance, what about going through a credit card instead of financing through Dell? The CC company surely already has your SSN, but going this route would prevent Dell from getting it as well.

...

Not in my experience

...but that was three years ago.

That said, pretty sure my father gave his SSN when he opened an account to finance his laptop back in 08. It's nothing new.

A signature used to be here!

Patriot act requires what now?

Dell isn't a bank account. Not sure what is meant by this.
