Could Marijuana Legalisation Save The American Economy?

If the States want to shore up their, "budget deficits," right quick, just legalize marijuana.

Let's do some simple math here...

I think it's safe to say that at least 50 million Americans smoke weed. That's being ultra conservative...

Let's say the average pot smoker in the US consumes 1 ounce of marijuana per month. Again, that's being very conservative.

That's 12 ounces of weed per person, per year on average.

If every ounce of marijuana was sold for $100, and $80 of the cost was a tax that went directly to the states, how much money would that generate in sales tax alone?

12 oz. X $80 tax each = $960 in tax revenue per pot smoker on average.

$960 X 50 million pot smokers = $48,000,000,000

$48 BILLION in tax revenue generated per year at minimum.

That's about $1 billion more for every state.

Most pot nowadays sells for about $200-400 per ounce, which is freaking crazy.

Americans would be happy to legally pay $100 for an ounce of pot and could care less if 80% of the cost went to the government, because they would be paying about 3 times less than the illegal - NON tax generating pot.

Marijuana has the potential to turn itself into a $100 BILLION annual cash crop.

We'd be able to pay off the national debt in less than 200 years.

No...

Because there is nothing wrong with the economy. The slavemasters have simply finally starting taking too much and so force people out of even a simple lifestyle.

If they would stop stealing, people could live. And finding a new industry for the slavemasters to tax isn't the solution.

p.s. The high cost is associated with risk and not production cost. Production cost is extremely low, especially when you don't have to use extra measures to hide your activities. So if it were legal, really legal, cost would fall through the floor.

Yeah, let's pay more taxes...

The cool thing about marijuana and probably the reason it's so hard to get it legal is that it would be impossible to regulate/tax. People would just grow it on their own land. Doesn't take a lot of equipment or expertise.

Here's a good laugh

A B.C. Marijuana activist named "Erb" just won $25 million on the lottery.

My GF

is a pro hemp activist and she does not use marijuana. My GF makes a whale of a case for hemp. Hemp could be used to make clean fuel and lots of it. This alone would create a boom in the economy and farmers would prosper.

There are thousands of commercial uses for hemp. Unfortunately, hemp legalization has been politically impossible because of years and years of lies about hemp. I hope things are beginning to change.

And this doesn't even include

And this doesn't even include the numerous applications from the hemp industry and other non smokable uses of cannabis. It really is a remarkable plant.

.

only if weed is sold unregulated and untaxed could it save the american economy.

love how liberals ask for marijuana to be legalized and then in the same breath beg for it to be taxed- and do so, GLEEFULLY!

As if the gvt will pay down the debt with tax income from marijuana sales, or used to shore up SS!lol
oh, the mind of a lib!

"OH NO! He has a SON?" Neoconservatives and Liberals EVERYWHERE!

Just my curiosity...

are you British, zooamerica? I appreciate your spelling of "legalisation," it's smooth.

Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say that legalized marijuana would save the US economy because the system is unsustainable without a total restructuring. Regardless, the positive effects of legalization could be revolutionary.

does this open the door

for hemp?

Where will all the out of work people

get the money to buy weed?

You may get some jobs out of it, but I don't think it's going to save anything. AS "thenug" points out.. We're too far gone.

We will be able to grow a bigger police state government

This is why people want decriminalization..

Should tomatos be legal?

Exactly right

The comparison to tomatos hits the nail on the head

These bills are setting up a highly (no pun intended) regulated state. You don't become freer by passing more laws. You become freer by getting rid of them.

Maybe that's what I'll do for the next two years HuskerSkier

I think it's time for a grassroots campaign to get tomatoes legalized.

MMM Maybe I should get potatos legalized instead? Chips anyone? Featuring the Potato Head family?

Yeah.. It's time to legalize potatoes.
