Harvard hospital admits it promoted weak science on aspartame

Harvard hospital admits it promoted weak science on aspartame

By Robert Bazell, NBC News

A new study finding a potential cancer risk from the artificial sweetener aspartame is so weak that Brigham and Women’s Hospital -- a Harvard teaching facility -- is now apologizing for promoting the research. In other words, if you see a headline screaming, “Aspartame linked to cancer,” don’t believe it. But it may be too late; the situation is a great example of why the public often finds science confusing and frustrating.

Pregnant Women Avoid Aspartame

EPA lists Aspartame as a Developmental Neurotoxin.

According to the EPA, Aspartame is a Developmental Neurotoxin. If you are pregnant, do not drink or eat any products with aspartame.

EPA’s program for the screening and prioritization of chemicals for
developmental neurotoxicity makes it essential to assemble a list of chemicals that are toxic to the developing mammalian nervous system

Some time ago there was a post on a favorable Harvard study. I commented on how credible a Harvard study was and is and got voted down some lol

GE/Comcast/Universal/NBC is sooooooooooo, reliable.

aspertame may not cause cancer, but.....

it is a neurotoxin that is known to affect the brain. I won't allow it in my house.

Do not spread groundless fear

I cannot believe I am actually defending aspartame, but such an accusation requires some pretty strong science to back it up. Aspartame is no neurotoxin.

The EPA (according to sarcoplasm)

has declared it unfit for pregnant women and children, there are more complaints to the FDA about aspartame each year, and the stuff gives me and others splitting headaches. Need more evidence?

Ha ha, the EPA.

The EPA likes to base its research on studies which stuff rats so full of a compound, it's almost certain to cause cancer or some kind of harm.

Just ask those in California who now have to deal with "this is a potential carcinogen" warning labels on practically everything.

But hey, when a government agency confirms your viewpoint, they must be telling the truth.

I agree with your point, but

I agree with your point, but feel free to show your strong science to back it up. To truth is most chemical we are probably in the dark about because it is true that many seem to make it through based on how much money is thrown at the CDC and FDA

Here is a review of several studies especially for sarcoplasm - Use of artificial sweeteners not correlated to weight loss: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2892765/?tool=pu... In fact, use of any one of a number of artificial sweeteners actually correlated with weight gain. And it's not that artificial sweeteners are themselves insidious fattening agents, it is simply because they give people a false sense of accomplishment. Which is exactly what I told him/her originally: If you want to lose weight, avoid anything labeled with the word "diet" :)

Of course, this is all a black swan argument. The onus isn't on me to prove that aspartame is NOT dangerous, the onus is on the opponents of aspartame to come up with legitimate scientific study showing that it IS.
