The Rand Paul Evolution: Rand Paul calls for 'path to citizenship' for illegals

Politico: Rand Paul calls for 'path to citizenship' for illegals: Call it the Rand Paul Evolution. He’ll push to loosen marijuana penalties, legalize undocumented immigrants and pursue a less aggressive American foreign policy.

In an interview with POLITICO, Paul said he’ll return to Congress this week pushing measures long avoided by his party. He wants to work with liberal Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy and Republicans to eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for pot possession. He wants to carve a compromise immigration plan with an “eventual path” to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a proposal he believes could be palatable to conservatives. And he believes his ideas — along with pushing for less U.S. military intervention in conflicts overseas — could help the GOP broaden its tent and appeal to crucial voting blocs that handed Democrats big wins in the West Coast, the Northeast and along the Great Lakes.

“We have three big regions where we’re not competitive,” Paul said. “And we have to be competitive in those regions.”

Paul, 49, was elected on the tea party wave that fueled GOP landslide victories in 2010, often declaring on the campaign trail that he had a “message” from the tea party: “We have come to take our government back.”

But two years later, the tea party agenda has stalled in Congress, and House Republicans who ran on that purity platform in 2010 began to tout bipartisan compromises with Democrats in 2012. Nationally, the GOP recognizes it has a demographic problem from New England to the Southwest it needs to correct ahead of the 2014 midterm elections and the next White House race in 2016.

Both of your points make me

Both of your points make me want to support the notion even less. 'Eventual', whether that means tomorrow or 40 years from now is still giving in to people who cut in line and broke our laws to immigrate. That is unacceptable.

Secondly, a moratorium? How would that be desirable or equitable? "Sorry, you can't come here legally because all the people who came to the United States illegally need to be dealt with first." That's still rewarding the bad behavior and punishing compliance!

(I'm chuckling at the absurdity as I write this - you'll get it, when I'm finished)...

So America needs to... "abandoned the principles of Constitutional Liberty to save Constitutional Liberty."

C'mon, TELL ME THAT ISN'T FUNNY!!!!!!! Remember Bush? Abandoning free-market principles with TARP?!?!?!?!

But no.

dailybashrandpaul.com has a nice ring to it.

Like the version that will run on REPUBLICAN Townhall, Hotair, the Blaze, Redstate, etc, etc... right?

Has Rand Paul become a Stepford Senator?

For all ove you not old enough google Stepford Wives 1975

Amnesty is Amnesty, if he is going to give Amnesty to Mexicans I propose we give unlimited immigration status to eastern block countries like Poland who understand communism and it's evils, or how about unlimited immigrants from Korea, Taiwan and Japan. What's fair for one is fair for all.

On the other hand, we are over burdened, over taxed and broke and can't afford 40 million Mexicans sending back money to Mexico.

This is a flanking maneuvre

The latest MSM propaganda has been about changing the R party so it is broader based. Need I explain further? Of course none of the Rand haters gives him credit for the other 2 points made. 'loosen marijuana penalties . . and pursue a less aggressive American foreign policy'

Actually I was a Rand Supporter before this

Legal Pot doesn't affect me, I could care less.

40 Million illegals do

You should care - legal pot DOES effect you

Do you pay taxes? Do taxes pay for drug prohibition?

I don't care

I pay a hell of alot more taxes for illegals than pot. While I'm for legalizing pot, it's not my number 1 agenda, just being honest.

Your problem isn't with illegals...

...your problem is with the welfare state, and I agree.

But you shouldn't take out your frustration on individuals who choose to live where they wish to live.

They are already here

and they are not going away. What is wrong with a sensible way to citizenship and abiding by the rules?

no interest in foreign policy I guess?

oh well. I guess you're not the one being bombed . . yet. Why should you care, right?

Carve out your niche, then pounce.

Seems Rand used a knife to "carve out his niche" in the backs of Americans who elected him, NAIVELY THINKING he was Ron.

Suppose I break into your

Suppose I break into your house and hide in the attic. If I hide there undiscovered long enough I get ownership of your house. Further, you have to pay my bills. This is the gist of illegal immigration.

As the poster below said,

As the poster below said, they would all come legally if they could. Heck, had they immigrated in 1910, they all could have come legally. The American tradition is free immigration. The main exception before the 1920s was the Chinese Exclusion Act. Other than that, it was virtually open borders.

The reason they hide in the attic

is because the front door is ridiculously difficult to open. I have professors that can contribute significantly to the US that cannot get citizenship. It is out of control. No wonder people come illegally. If it was a more streamlined process, then we wouldn't have so many illegals. Ensuring that these human beings are able to become a product and law abiding citizen (also paying taxes) is critical for our country.

Throw in a raped daughter and an emptied wallet... and you got it!

Stop Immigration?

This surprises and disappoints me. I'm normally a Rand fan, but this is foolish. You can't seal the borders. They're too big and incentive is too great. It's like the drug war. The only answer is to liberalize immigration and allow a great deal of more people into the country.

No to open borders?

I'm surprised my comment got down-voted. Open borders is a classic libertarian idea. In his book, "Liberty Defined" Ron Paul says open borders should be the end goal. He does add that perverse incentives need to be removed like all of the free crap that people get for moving here, which I also agree with. Gary Johnson also suggested letting more people into the country legally.

But in his book

Ron Paul stated that "the libertarians who argue for completely open borders for the free flow of goods and people fail to realize that a truly libertarian society would not necessarily be that open," and then goes on to describe the concept of permission on privately owned property. I don't consider myself a Libertarian (no offense, but yall can have Ayn Rand) but I do believe in common sense Constitutionalism and economics (which happen to be from the Austrian school). There should be immigration reform but to be given a free pass to citizenship is a slap in the face to those who have came here legally.

Well...as a

Well...as a constitutionalist, you should know that the U.S. had defacto open borders for nearly a century after the Constitution was written. For Europeans and Latin Americans, it had defacto open borders until the 1920s. The advocates of "open borders" are just call for returning to the vision of the founders.

I agree

The moratorium seems like a terrible idea, but it makes sense to create a path to citizenship.

toast! TEA Party my eye...

When Fascism goes to sleep, it checks under the bed for Ron Paul!

I've been defending Rand for a long time, but now he is really getting on my nerves.

To all the Rand-bashers...

If you don't like him, what's stopping you from becoming a senator or congressman?

Just sayin'.

I just might

and I think I could do a hell of a better job than endorsing Romney and letting mass immigration, amnesty and crazy Libertarian Party open borders. They are F....ing nuts.

ha ha I love the anti Rand trolls

very entertaining, we have a major infestation, what does it remind me of, oh yeah the Gary Johnson/third party trolls. Probably the same agents.

@RonPaulRadical....I would

@RonPaulRadical....I would more likely believe that you are an agent and a Troll. Contitutional Conservatives have many different ideas and opinions and screw you for trying to make anyone here feel guilty for that. I am for moving this country back to a Republic and rooting out this complete Socialist takeover by the two party system.
