The Rand Paul Evolution: Rand Paul calls for 'path to citizenship' for illegals

Politico: Rand Paul calls for 'path to citizenship' for illegals: Call it the Rand Paul Evolution. He’ll push to loosen marijuana penalties, legalize undocumented immigrants and pursue a less aggressive American foreign policy.

In an interview with POLITICO, Paul said he’ll return to Congress this week pushing measures long avoided by his party. He wants to work with liberal Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy and Republicans to eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for pot possession. He wants to carve a compromise immigration plan with an “eventual path” to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a proposal he believes could be palatable to conservatives. And he believes his ideas — along with pushing for less U.S. military intervention in conflicts overseas — could help the GOP broaden its tent and appeal to crucial voting blocs that handed Democrats big wins in the West Coast, the Northeast and along the Great Lakes.

“We have three big regions where we’re not competitive,” Paul said. “And we have to be competitive in those regions.”

Paul, 49, was elected on the tea party wave that fueled GOP landslide victories in 2010, often declaring on the campaign trail that he had a “message” from the tea party: “We have come to take our government back.”

But two years later, the tea party agenda has stalled in Congress, and House Republicans who ran on that purity platform in 2010 began to tout bipartisan compromises with Democrats in 2012. Nationally, the GOP recognizes it has a demographic problem from New England to the Southwest it needs to correct ahead of the 2014 midterm elections and the next White House race in 2016.

If it is just streamlining the process

then I am all for it. But if he wants amnesty, he will lose some serious cred with me. Amnesty didnt work in 80s, and it wont work again. We have some of the most liberal and easy immigration policies in the world, which is not inherently bad. But we have a massive welfare state in this country, and Latinos proved that they enjoy entitlements by voting for the Welfare Party (Dems). Legal Hispanics do not care about immigration as much as the free stuff they have been promised.....

Quit with the Fox News rhetoric

There are Hispanics on the DP who fought for Ron Paul in the primaries. Please do not insult them with collectivist rhetoric.

Thanks

I am one of those "Latinos who proved that [I] enjoy entitlements". I must really love them as I fought tirelessly as a Ron Paul supporter. Sign waves, knocking on doors, working in the rain, making phone calls, posting YouTube videos, running for delegate...I did it ALL.

Thanks to all the folks who add credibility to the notion that Ron Paul and his supporters are racist...please think twice before you make dumb comments.

Don't think the comments on

Don't think the comments on this post represent the majority opinion on the daily paul. This post just attracted some racist people like flies are attracted to fresh horse shit.

Over 70% voted the Democrat Party line last tuesday

And a lol @ your drivel. Is that the best you got? Paultard.

Not saying that the GOP would be much harsher on cutting entitlements, but seriously, you endorse the idea of free stuff and "sticking it to the rich" when you vote the Democratic Party line. Or maybe it was because Obama was the "darker man running"?

Paultard?

Are we not all "Paultards"?

More seriously, buying into Fox News' simplistic narrative of Dem=free stuff and "sticking it to the rich" does not contribute to a grown up discussion of the current state of politics and how to advance the cause of liberty. Surely all those who desired to "stick it to the rich" did vote Obama, but they hardly constitute the majority of his support. Just the other night I hosted a get together with half a dozen friends, all of whom voted for Obama. But I was the only one there who didn't pay income taxes last year. They are not looking for free stuff, nor do they mind honest rich people. They are simply stuck in the two-party mind frame and judged (not without reason) that Obama was better than Romney for the country.

It's obvious Rand doesn't know anything

about the illegal aliens who are in our country! I live in the suburbs of Houston, Tx, where illegals are everywhere you go. The majority I have spoken to over the last 10yrs (not the ones who came 20+ yrs ago-very different)have no intentions on becoming an American and most detest the notion. The majority, especially from Mexico come here to get all the free 'wellfare' the are privy to, and believe they are going to take their land back, aka Reconquista de Atzlan. They are taught this in Mexico, I have read it in their school books. Texas will soon end up like Mexifornia, and be bankrupt from the people on the dole, out numbering the working class. Nothing chaps my azz more then when I see an illegal wheel up here cart overflowing with groceries, pulls out 3 or 4 Lone Star cards to get it all for free! She's dressed in Tommy Hilfiger and the like, her kids wearing the same, they wheel the cart out and get into a brand new fully loaded $50 grand Suburban! The only solution to the problem is to cut off the welfare system to all undocumented people period! If they were in Mexico they wouldn't receive anything, so why wouldn't they come get the free stuff? This allows them to work cheaper, destroying the wage base, and if a white person gets laid off from their job, they can't survive, if they can even find someone to hire them to do labor work, as they have zero chance of getting welfare.
Rand needs to quit playing the go along to get along BS, or he will quickly lose his support and be a former Senator from Kentucky and the Paul who became a whopping failure in his first term. Why does he believe people who come from a failed Latino state, who love to get something for nothing, would vote for the GOP? This pandering to third world minset will only increase the Socialist state and complete dominance for the Democrats!

Immigrants are only a problem

Immigrants are only a problem when an economy stinks. If we actually let free markets work, we would be begging even more people to move here to take the jobs we have too man of!

Dealing with illegals is a waste of time. Fix the economy and that won't be a problem.

Clearly you are ignorant too. Mexicans are only a tiny fraction.

Most are from central and south america; not mexico.

But the problem is the complexity of the federal code; this is Rand's issue. This is all that Rand is trying to fix... so as not to oppress everyone with RED TAPE and blood sucking lawyers that spring up around it to rape its government victims.

What Rand Paul knows...

I do not know, but the point of relaxing immigration is not to get the votes of non-citizens. As it is, they can't vote anyway. The point is that Latino communities are mixed legal/illegal, and the legals do not want to see their friends and relatives deported. Now, I see nothing wrong with making citizenship easier to get. In a free society, anyone could come and go as they pleased and live wherever they like. What has to be done, of course, is what you allude to: eliminate the welfare state, so that those who come freely don't cost our society but rather contribute to it. Those who need help getting established will find it in their Latino communities just as Italians, Greeks, Serbians, Irish, etc. did.

Rand is merely trying to simplify the complex law. Nothing more.

There are some really cruel aspects to our immigration law that end up being tools of coercion for money-grubbing attorneys. What results is organized oppression, racketeering and crime.

You have people who have been here for 15+ years who have registered and have all of their immigration paperwork completed but their US government ID and green-card is stamped "not valid for reentry"... so they are here legally but can't even return home for a parents funeral unless they want to barred from re-entering only to begin the process of corruption all over again from the beginning.

This nation is wicked. We are not free and we do not have liberty.

We are a nation are racketeers; big and small who increasingly oppress and take advantage of those who are least able to defend themselves.

We murder the unborn and we enslave the elderly. Our prisons have turned into labor farms, where non-violet non-criminals work to enrich the corporate prison industry.

Even those among us who falsely claim to be free are in debt past their eyeballs.

Why anyone would want to immigrate here is beyond me. If they only knew that our bill of rights and constitution are completely ignored now they might just go back home. Except that our private banking system is still giving out loans to those who can not pay; not because they don't try but because the system itself is designed to enslave.

Devvy Kidd's Response

"Reward criminals who break into our house, steal 11.5 MILLION jobs that belong to Americans, steal people's identities ruining their lives, run state budgets into massive debt to feed, clothe, educate house, provide free medical treatment and incarcerate tens of millions of illegal aliens instead of enforcing the laws already on the books and step up deporting anyone who is in this country illegally.

Aren't people sick and tired of having the fruits of their labor stolen in federal and state income taxes to give criminals a free ride? How does it feel to get up everyday and work hard just to hand it over to people who have no legal right to even be in this country? It's called stealing. Rand Paul wants to reward those who steal from you and by extension, your family because it's less money in your household.

Not to mention our wide open borders.

No money? $2 BILLION borrowed dollars a month is being whizzed away for the grotesque "wars" and invasions in the Middle East while terrorists cross the border every day.

I lost all respect for Rand Paul soon after he took office. His compromise position is the same brand of poison that has brought us to where we are, but it's easier than being true a statesman and leader. Say what you want about Eisenhower, he knew how to round up illegals and get them deported without a lot of fuss.

A "plan that will appeal to conservatives", Mr. Paul? The only plan is to deport all illegals regardless of country of origin, period. It doesn't matter how long they've been in this country. Rewarding them only acts as a magnet for more to invade our country."

I have very little respect

I have very little respect for Rand but I welcome this change. What the heck is wrong with "open borders?" Back in the 1770s and 1780s, and for a hundred years later, the U.S. had virtually open borders and no INS!

Deporting illegals is a

Deporting illegals is a government solution. Why not allow them to join the country? Why allow people to live in fear of government coercion?

Actually protecting our borders

Is in the Constitution, throw the illegals out - period

When the Constitution was

When the Constitution was adopted and for a hundred years after we had almost open borders on immigration. There was no INS and very little in terms of border controls.
