Diagnosed with ADD, In need of natural treatments.

I was just recently diagnosed with Attention deficit disorder (ADD). And of course the first thing they want to do is have me on pills. I'm looking for possible natural treatments that have helped those with it and if anyone could give me advice, that'd be great. I have known for quite a while something wasn't right and I have tried some herbs, changing diets a bit seeing what works better. I have even started running and exercising everyday as I have read that helps, but It just hasn't helped that much. I honestly dont want to put Meds like that into my body.. Just leads to more problems.. But, i am struggling with this. And trying to find something that helps in managing it. Would be glad to hear your opinions, thanks.

Skills and supports

My wife has ADD. Skills and supports are extremely important. She has figured out supports that help keep her focused. For example, she sets a timer for 10 or 15 minutes. If, at the end of the time, she is not doing what she was doing when she set the timer, she knows she got distracted. She also lives by her 3 x 5 note cards.

I just recently

watched a video by Dr. Brownstein, a thyroid gland specialist, in which he said hyperactivity was a result of hypo thyroidism. He treated a young boy with natural desiccated thyroid and it solved the problem. Here is a link to the video and I strongly urge you to watch the whole thing even though the woman pitching his book is forward through her if necessary.

Also, hypo thyroid is under-diagnosed because of the tests they use and also the drug they prescribe is not adequate: you need the natural dessicated thyroid.

Iodine will help the thyroid if you are not getting enough. You can get a bottle at the health food store for around $7 and it will last a full year.

My wife went absolutely bonkers on me about a year ago. You guessed it, Thyroid issues was the problem, back to normal now.

I was diagnosed as having ADD in high school and they put me on Ritalin. Great drug but very bad for your body.

I tried Adderral too but I hated it for the most part. Both drugs have nasty crashes when you are coming down but Adderral is much worse. I can only do a day or two of those and then I let my body drift off for a few days and then back on.

I havent changed my diet because I love to eat, but when I need to concentrate I just use coffee or hot tea just to get by. I'm very sensitive to both of those and they really screw up my system but the crashes from those are even less than the methamphetamines. Now I drink very sweet (natural cane sugar) iced tea all day long and that helps. I put about a cup of sugar in each pitcher I make. Sugar in the raw is best.

I have found that your life will be better accomplished if you just chase what you love because you will be more interested in learning about it. I excel at the challenges before me if I have a great interest. Avoid worthless junk in your life like Algebra if you can.

There is some good advice here, cycle through it to see what works for you.

Chelation is good as long as its natural, you can make Cilantro Smoothies or Cilantro Pesto very easily.

Attention Deficit? or Hyper-Attention? or Acute Senses?

I finally found an article that addresses what I have long believed to be the real issue surrounding attention deficit. Its actually not attention deficit but more accurately should be described as hyper-attention or hyper-focus. This misunderstood phenomenon which may be related to attention-deficit often results in misdiagnosis and over prescribing of various drugs to combat the phenomenon.

Often times people with ADHD actually have very acute sensory systems that they react to and can't seem to stay "on task" because they may, for example, hear everything that goes on around them. If this acute sense of hearing causes you to be interrupted from your task, you may be diagnosed as having an "attention deficit". You may want to try noise cancelling headphones to reduce sound inputs that cause you to break your concentration.

I would definitely explore these other natural options before accepting the many mind altering drugs that will be prescribed to combat these symptoms.

#1 Aerobic exercise and #2 caffeine.

If you needed another excuse to get active, this is it. Exercise-induced endorphins work. Caffeine will also provide a calming effect for true ADD. When moms bring their kids in for an evaluation and ask "why is my kid drinking a lot of coffee?," the answer is ADD is high on the list of possibilities. #3 Eat organic food with high quality protein, and take supplements like Vit. D, selenium, and magnesium. If none of this works, re-consider the Rx meds like Adderall. Maybe you only need one tablet in the morning/day rather than two. Agree, that meds are the last resort, but be happy that they are at least there as a possibility.

You are lacking Minerals and Vitamins

Yes, it is that simple. I have read all the posts and not one suggestion is viable.

I have experience with this so-called disease. My son was diagnosed in 8th grade 15 years ago. We went with the traditional methods to "fix" his problem and we drugged him with Adderal. Things got better for a while on the Adderal, then he started having heart problems. We took him off the drug and had to "deal" with his issues.

If I knew back then what we know now, it would've never happened to start with.

You need 90 essential minerals and vitamins every day to help your body and brain function.

60 Minerals, 16 Vitamins, 12 Amino Acids and 2-3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's), plus a super good source of Iodine. (More on where to get the best in a minute.)

Then you need to quit eating 10 bad foods. Yep, just 10.

Avoid anything that has Wheat, Barley, Rye or Oats in it. It is a LIE that grains are good for us! Not so. They all contain "gluten" which inflames your small intestines and stops absorption of minerals and vitamins. No more bread, cakes, cookies, pasta unless they are GMO free, organic, gluten free. No Carbonated Drinks within one hour before, during or 1 hour after meals. (Carbonation neutralizes stomach acid) No diet drinks with artificial sweetners
No BBQ’d anything – no blackened meats/veggies – BBQ with foil between food and flame. Carcinogens are deadly.
No skin of baked potatoes or sweet potatoes – boiled potatoes with skin ok.
No peanuts – all other nuts ok – dry roasted/salted.

GOOD FOODS you can eat!

All Dairy – Butter, Sour Cream, Milk, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, all REAL CHEESES. (NO MARGERINE!)
Eggs – Soft boiled, soft scrambled in butter, or poached – the runnier, the better
Salt – salt food to taste (iodized best)
Beef – cooked rare or medium rare
Mixed, Salted Nuts – NO PEANUTS
Nut butters – no extra sugar
Pure Buckwheat (it isn’t wheat)
Couscous (made from pearl millet only)
Coffee, Tea, Green Tea, Red Wine

My son (and entire family) is following this protocol religiously and has no more ADD symptoms. He just recently started on "nascent" iodine protocol and is having even more mental clarity then ever before.

Believe me, weed and adderal or any drug is NOT going to CURE you. It will relieve the symptoms for a little while and cause other health related problems that the MD's will try to fix with yet another drug.

You need to be responsible for yourself and your health. Don't hand it over to the Rockefeller financed pharmacuetical industry and MD's. Unless you're in a major accident requiring surgery, you don't need the MD's. They are actually pretty good at fixing broken or infected things, but not good with "general health" issues.

I was going to comment with a similar answer.

I try to avoid grains, legumes, and anything processed.
I eat them all, occasionally, but very little of either.
Don't overdo caffeine or sugar.
Try to eat mostly fresh fruits, veggies, meats, fish, poultry.
(leafy greens, berries, fish, walnuts, and I think almonds are especially good, supposedly)
Try to avoid factory farm foods.
Never skip breakfast! I can't focus at all when I'm hungry.
Try to exercise regularly...aerobic type to keep your breath and blood flowing. Make sure you get enough sleep.
And, drink plenty of filtered water.


Also remember that wheat is the only grain that is able to cross the blood brain barrier. I would watch out with casein as well in dairy products. I would suggest remove dairy temporary and gradually add it back in after a few months free of it. You will know what you can/cannot eat after you conduct exclusion diets. I would also suggest an e95 panel. You might have a leaky gut issue. Check out meridian valley labs in Washington state and it will give you all the information.

Good approach; you are to be commended for taking charge

and getting away from the failed medical establishment. Getting proper nutrition is critical, and you hit the nail on the head in your understanding.

We live in a toxic world with devitalized foods, and that is part of the problem, but even worse is the low fat, high carbohydrate diet craze that deprives our bodies of the fat we need to function. The nervous system is particularly damaged from lack of the cholesterol it needs to maintain itself. Equally damaging is the low salt craze, and even those who use salt don't use the real stuff. Real salt is not refined, is not white, and contains many trace minerals that are absent in what most people buy in grocery stores. It is no wonder that nervous systems malfunction in the young as ADD or in the old as Alzheimer's.

I renounced the whole thing two years ago. I highly recommend you stick to your guns on your no meds policy. Adderall was more disruptive to me than All I can do is tell you what I did:

I've accepted my personal traits & learned to work around them (TO DO lists, post its, etc.)

Regular exercise is key, (even if you don't think so yet). You don't have to knock yourself out, just do fun exercise regularly.

Radically change my diet---no more arificial flavor packets/boxes (THAT alone make a huge difference for me), fresh super veggies & fruits both whole & juiced at home, no deli meats--- I try to only eat foods that do NOT have a list of ingredients.

Got ahold of my sleep patterns (see exercise and food above!).

And went back to C. Indica. Yes, I said it. Only a little once or twice every day. Believe it or not, it keeps my mood and attention on track. (Don't forget the anti-disease properties of everything above.)

It took about 8-10 months for all of these things in combination to come together, and now I see the light. Looking back on it, I'm convinced now that ADD is due to environmental factors acting on my "unique" personality traits. I kept the "uniqueness" but got rid of the ADD part. I'm also convinced that ADD has become more of a brand name than anything. You be you, just make it natural.

Just a few questions

How old are you? Why have you all of a sudden been DX with ADD?

It sounds from your post that you yourself feel this is disrupting your life. In what way does it interfere?

Have you had these symptoms all along, or is this something new?
These questions I am asking are important so I can't give advise without the answers. By the way my GD was Dx with autism at 2 years old.

She no longer has the Dx because of alternative interventions.
