Ron Paul's Texas Straight Talk 11/19/12: If a People Cannot Secede, They Are Not Free

by minnesotachris

by Ron Paul

Is all the recent talk of secession mere sour grapes over the election or perhaps something deeper? Currently there are active petitions in support of secession for all 50 states, with Texas taking the lead in number of signatures. Texas has well over the number of signatures needed to generate a response from the administration, and while I wouldn’t hold my breath on Texas actually seceding, I believe these petitions raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union.

Is it treasonous to want to secede from the United States? Many think the question of secession was settled by our Civil War. On the contrary, the principles of self-government and voluntary association are at the core of our founding. Clearly, Thomas Jefferson believed secession was proper, albeit as a last resort. Writing to William Giles in 1825 he concluded that states “should separate from our companions only when the sole alternatives left are the dissolution of our union with them, or submission to a government without limitation of powers.”

Keep in mind that the first and third paragraph of the Declaration of Independence expressly contemplate the dissolution of a political union when the underlying government becomes tyrannical. Do we have a government without limitation of powers yet? The federal government kept the union together through violence and force in the Civil War, but did might really make right?

Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession. Some thought it was treasonous to secede from England, but those “traitors” became our country’s greatest patriots. There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents. That is what our revolutionary war was all about and today, our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform. In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo.

If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties, and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it. Consider the ballot measures that passed in Colorado and Washington state regarding marijuana laws. The people in those states have clearly indicated that they are ready to try something different where drug policy is concerned, yet they will still face a tremendous threat from the federal government. In California the feds have been arresting peaceful medical marijuana users and raiding dispensaries that state and local governments have sanctioned. This shouldn’t happen in a free country!

It remains to be seen what will happen in states that are refusing to comply with deeply unpopular mandates of Obamacare by not setting up healthcare exchanges. It appears the federal government will not respect those decisions either.

In free country governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed. When the people have very clearly withdrawn their consent for a law, the discussion should be over. If the feds refuse to accept that and continue to run roughshod over the people, at what point do we acknowledge that that is not freedom anymore? At what point should a people dissolve the political bands which have connected them with an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government? And if people or states are not free to leave the United States as a last resort, can they really think of themselves as free? If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government they cannot truly be considered free.

The right of the people peaceably to assemble implies...

the right to peacefully disassemble, does it not?

Our union is a voluntary association of states; wherein we gave constitutional sanctions that created a federal government to; for instance, better serve our local interests by providing for a common defense against foreign enemies than we could effectively do as localized, individual states.

What these petitions signify is our mutual recognition that the perceived and real threats against our well-being as individual states from this contractually created entity are no longer believably seen as the protectors of our common interests. Tragically, the feds are too often acting more like the very enemy it was created to repel!

When respect for our repeated petitions for the redress of huge grievances, are only, always, met with contempt; then self-respect and self-defense demand that we behave differently than when we might have had a reasonable expectation of such redress, right?

"Congress shall make no law abridging", this; but when has the Constitution stopped most of Congress from doing what everyone knows they should not?

Three thing that will INSTANTLY...

separate the sheep from the goats. Bring up any one of these three, and you will instantly see who is Liberty and who is ESTABLISHMENT:

1. Third parties
2. Nullification
3. Secession

They, all three, indicate some sort of REJECTION or separation - the Establishment HATES this, with a PASSION!

Our country originally

Our country originally operated as a 4 legged table. The three legs that are still in operation nowdays are the judicial, legislative and executive branches. The fourth was the liberty of the states to tell the federal government,"NO!". We have lost that power to an overreaching federal government just exactly as was warned about in the Federalist Papers. Lincoln may have had the best of intentions but eradicating the right of states to refuse the federal government edicts was the wrong method. He didn't want to follow the Constitution because it wouldn't give the federal government power over the states where he could order the states to obey his wishes. By removing the right of the states to refuse the federal government the balance was upset and the now-three legged table teetered for 150 years but now that table has fallen over. Lincoln and Johnson took shortcuts that we are reaping the ills from today. Restore the tenth Amendment!

While I agree with Ron on principle

I'm not sure he truly understands the gravity of what actual secession would mean in this day and age. It would be absolutely devastating. To deny these realities is to live in fantasy, and with great hubris. There is no denying that the states could secede again... and there would likely be a war again... and that is why it must be prevented from happening.

I am sure

Back when our country was formed these issues seemed just as scary. But what has changed about wanting to be free from that time till now? The answer is Nothing.

the current path we are on is not devastating? if i understand your logic you prefer a slow grind that fritters our lives away rather than a painful but quick resolution.

I prefer...

I prefer, more than anything, that we resort to violence as a complete last resort. I prefer that we continue to work to change the system from the outside in. Secession would plunge the nation into a dark age. We would be susceptible to mass invasion, poverty would go through the roof... Americans would undoubtedly be fighting Americans. This is not the libertarian utopia anyone hoped for a year ago. Let's hope it doesn't become "the gold standard". Perhaps Ron thinks that the threat of secession may force government accountability, but even this, if brought out in the House or Senate, could cause a massive chain reaction that would make it inevitable. Even the discussion of it on the Congressional record would be a monstrous problem in the future. The best course of action is for the Congress to become less complacent and more assertive. If not, the public must demand a third party solution or dissolve one of the existing parties to form a new one.

I think you are missing the point

secession means the desire to leave is exercised. you are advocating control over other peoples' decision. you interject this notion that there would be violence and confusion as if it's a forgone conclusion. we are talking about the principle of free will, either you are for it or not...

My point is

Don't give up one our way of life. I am not imposing anything on others other than an opinion you may find annoying. However, if the movement were to go forward, it is a foregone conclusion the federal government would retaliate, with potential martial law and deadly force. The U.S. has been in a continued state of emergency since 9-11-01, renewed by Obama, giving him emergency powers. My point is don't give up on the values we already have. They often disappear when you advocate the dissolution of a nation.

I truly hope all the patriots

I truly hope all the patriots who have recently woken up understand that we are at a turning point in history where, if taken advantage of, We the People can actually stand up and bring about effective and peaceful change. It is wonderful that we have brave men like Ron Paul and others to spearhead this return to a Constitutional Republic, but if it is to happen, if it is to become a reality; each and every one of us must do our own part as well.

9:00 pm sunday night?

Chris Indeedski!

Daily Paul cured my abibliophobia.

Something is definitely up

with the Doc. He sounds like he is about ready to break loose.
Is anyone else getting this feeling?

He doesn't have to be a lowly congressman anymore.

He is now free to become that grandest thing - a free man!!!

Chris Indeedski!

Daily Paul cured my abibliophobia.

I sure hope so.

We need him to.

Ron Paul Revolution, give us back our CONSTITUTION!!

"In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned. When his cause succeeds however, the timid join him, For then it costs nothing to be a Patriot.” ~Mark Twain

WOW! He did not say "work within the current political system

to elect liberty leaders," etc. Instead, he said: "If the possibility of secession is COMPLETELY off the table, there is NOTHING to stop the Federal Government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and NO RECOURSE for those who are sick and tired of it." Sounds like it's time to sign the petition.

If you see something, say something, the government is listening.
Silence isn't golden, it's yellow.

This is where Ron Paul lies

and he knows it. He has been notified about the birth certificate issue a long time ago during his campaign.

What about the legal contract between the citizen and the state, Dr. Paul. Care to comment?

It can all be settled peacefully in court. Just bring your birth certificate as evidence. Don't use a lawyer. They are part of the illegal con. Just like any judge.

Linda Cross's picture

Your comment didn't seem to relate to what I said,

I just got the connection. You are saying that we should all secede as individuals by dissolving our legal binding to the state which is verified by our birth certificates? Interesting concept, but it hasn't worked very well for those who have tried. Your down-votes are most likely related to your saying that "Ron Paul lies". Respect Ron Paul, even if you disagree with him.

If you see something, say something, the government is listening.

Not secede

Simply demand to read the birth certificate contract in full. They cannot deny you this.

In case they reject a court battle there is one thing left to do which is to gather attention to the cause. Not through the media as they are part of the state propaganda in every nation.

I recon it would take about 250 thousand 'legal persons' (guessing) in the US to kill the present contract as the state would run out money to enforce its power over legal persons until the matter is solved in a court of law. The state doesn't have any right to coerce another legal person against that legal persons will.

You can start by making a petition and ask the President about the full details of this contract between the 2 legal persons. The state and the legal citizen. That's a simple one, right?

Why others have failed is simply because you must unite as a people. Not as single political activists. Then you play their game and you will lose.

The reason why the state continues to ignore the constitution is because of the birth certificate. The constitution recognizes the state and legal persons rights. But it differs as to what powers both parties enjoy. It just gives the state an advantage in terms of power. Sorry, but that's how it is.

So yes, the politicians can tell you they work for you. But the state pays their salaries with your money. Who do they work for. If everything was working well and all men are equal before the law we wouldn't have this debate at all.

You need to look at the declaration of independence which clearly states all men are equal before the law.

This is THE single issue Ron Paul should have focused on. He would have easily won that argument. It's so simple to explain to the public. So why didn't he.

Believe it or not. But this certificate is what gives the banks the power to issue your currency at interest. Because in legal terms the bank was given this right by the state. It (FED) was legally created by the state. They both depend on each other you see. The state can do whatever it wants as your rights was defined by the state to begin with. You are not free and never have been.

It is up to the people if you want your freedom. Paul cannot force it through by himself. He is only one legal person. But I know for a fact he was given the information during this recent campaign. He choose not to act on it. But saying there are no other options is simply not true.

Anyway, up to you. It's your life and freedom at stake. Not mine. I will take action together with quite a few legal persons in my own country. We get it and are prepared to act on it within the next couple of weeks.

We will then demand the implementation of MPE. (mathematically perfected economy as explained by Mike Montagne) if the state is still to exist it will accept those terms. Otherwise we will shut it down. Legally and without causing any violence. We and the state differ on that issue.

The new contract will consist of nothing except common law. You are free to enter the contract on equal basis with the state. But we will enforce common law locally and nationally. No more bollocks from those parasites in power.

Downvotes are not appropriate

The downvotes do not seem to be appropriate, based on the two responses. This post had nothing to do with Obama's birth certificate. The poster was asking questions about the birth certificate that all of us have been given, and the potential association between that and our slavery.

I myself have not researched this issue and thus cannot speak informedly about it; however, I wanted to clarify that Dane4life was not discussing the current administration, the discussion was about us and our paperwork.

I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

Thanks for actually reading what I wrote

The birth certificate issue is of the utmost importance. NOT Obama's.

No, the issue I want everyone to look into is your own birth certificates. This is in legal terms a legally binding contract we have with the state. This is the key that will unlock our chains.

We were manipulated into accepting this single document without ever being told about the true reason as to why the state issues it.

What it does is that is creates a 'legal person' of the state in which is was issued to a person. Once you have it you become a 'legal person' and hence the property of the state.

So if you want to take down the current system all you have to do is tell the state you want a new contract as you have been coerced into a legally binding contract. Is that legal in the US?

Remember in legal terms the state is nothing more than a legal person. All men are equal before the law.

Besides, that was a red herring anyway.

Obama's ministry of propaganda wants people think he was born overseas and endeavor to prove that. The fact is he was probably born in Hawaii, but the most important thing is his real father was prominent communist leader, Frank Marshall Davis, who tutored his son in the revolutionary ways of the atheistic, hardcore, criminal, murderous communist ideology.

Ron Paul knows that you can replace Obama with a Romney, or a Hillary, or a Ben B. with another figurehead.

So he's not looking to put energy into changing figureheads, but to restore our system of government to what is should be, a nation of freemen under God.

That's why he's saying that if we can't secede, we aren't free.
