The 47-year-old has been on medical leave from Congress since June.

CHICAGO — Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has resigned after a months-long leave for mental illness, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday.

Boehner's spokesman Michael Steel confirmed his office had received a letter of resignation from Jackson but did not comment further.

Jackson, 47, disappeared in June, and it was later revealed that he was being treated at the Mayo Clinic for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues. He returned to his Washington home in September, but went back to the clinic the next month, with his father saying his son had not yet "regained his balance." He left the clinic a second time earlier this month.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, has five days to schedule an election to replace Jackson after he receives official notice, and the election must be held within 115 days, according to election officials.

The vacancy left by Jackson's departure creates a rare opportunity for someone else to represent his district, which is made up of South Side Chicago neighborhoods ....

His "mistakes" must be so bad that he can't hide behind being a Democrat or using racism.

Yup. Chicago politics.

Better to say that you have mental illness and forgo any possibility of a future political career versus turning up dead somewhere.

sad state of affairs

when someone who disappears for 6 months gets re-elected

and to finish your good thought,.....

and resigns less than three weeks after the election. These people have egos that come first every time whether sick or not. The People who elected them always come second.

You better just beware of a man named Leroy Brown

Oops! Did little Jesse take an SSRI?

I have met so many people who were sad, went to a shrink and got a pill, and it "unmasked" their "pre-existing" bi-polar disorder.
How is it that one has something as troubling as bipolar disorder their whole life, but not have any symptoms until they take an SSRI? Well, because the courts cover Pharma's butt for them, that is how.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

Notice how these

journalists cannot tell the readers that Jackson is a Democrat, but they sure can tell ya Patt Quin is, because of course, he did nothing wrong. If a republican was to resign over a number of issues they would refer to the congressman as "republican rep so and so." To me, that is a bias. Tell your readers what party these corrupt pols hail from whether it is from the GOP or DNC!

LOL why didn't he do this before the election? For attention (not what I would want if I had ethics violations pending against me) or to milk the system? I would say the latter.
