EZ passSubmitted by Achieve Balance on Wed, 11/21/2012 - 17:20
I live in Maryland. I was paying my ez pass debt today as I get a bill whenever I travel on some of our roads here in my state. There are no toll workers and the tolls are billed automatically either based off of your license plate or/and an ez pass transponder. I don't own an ezpass transponder as I don't travel often on toll roads. Also, there is a "fee" if you own a transponder and don't use it once a month. It is a small fee, but nevertheless, its a fee for not using the service. The transponder itself has a cost as well.
Now, the more that I think of this entire situation as I sit on hold for 10 minutes to try and pay the 5 dollars I owe, I am thinking about how much this feels like a terrible instance of government and business getting in bed together.
In addition, if you don't have a pass, you are billed 150% of the toll rate. If I don't pay the toll in 30 days I am fined 25 dollars on top of whatever toll there is. If I don't pay in 60 days, they suspend my license.
I am now on hold for 20 minutes to just pay a bill, obviously customer service is of no concern as they have no competition. Anyone else see a problem with this? At least they take discover...the damn speed camera people don't and I have to cut a personal check and pay for postage. Gotta love this state....
I was just curious if the DP'ers would consider this a crunch on free markets? I am just thinking is that something that people in our country are actually voting for?
