Software Jobs Slowly Changing Focus to Police State

I am a Software Engineer whose area of focus is development of Microsoft Windows applications in the C++ language. I have been without a full-time job for almost two years, and am actively looking for work. Before this recession, I was never out of work for more than a few weeks at a time.

In looking for work on Dice.com, I have noticed a number of positions with some companies I shall not name, seeking programmers to develop software to control "unmanned aerial vehicles." There are A LOT of these positions available, and they pay well.

The whole situation is both scary and depressing, to think how much talent is wasted on police state and MIC technology. Just think of the things we could produce without this total brain drain into useless or even counterproductive activities.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there those of you who are in other fields who have encountered this shift in emphasis from consumer products to technologies serving the government?

I welcome any comments.

Yep, started really seeing it three years ago

By that time I kept seeing everything from pop-up ads to TV/radio commercials to billboards wanting people to work (directly or indirectly) for the DoD, CIA, and FBI. The ads seemed to target everyone from well educated tech geeks to HS dropouts who still live with mommy.

I don't see the ads nearly as much these days, but I hear talk of it far more often.

EDIT: typo

A signature used to be here!

There was a thread talking about software for snooping on

private voIP conversations which would benefit government agencies..

Would you know how to design an encrypted peer2peer text or voIP software? Just curious if you could or would be interested in doing something like that.

On your post: I may get some slack here, but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to get involved.. The Liberty movement may need knowledgeable people in the future concerning things like that. :)

There's open source software

There's open source software that can accomplish this quite well, it's just a bit hard for the average user to figure out which software to use, let alone get it all working together.

I got it all figured out. I've been meaning to write an article on how to get it all setup.

I want something built from the ground up with anonymous

security being the main focus.

What's the name of the software you're talking about?
