More Republicans Abandon Grover Norquist's Anti-Tax Pledge

HuffPo: WASHINGTON -- Several congressional Republicans said Sunday that they would be open to increasing the amount of money the government collects in taxes, with a senior Republican member of the U.S. Senate going so far as to say he is willing to break his earlier promise to not support tax hikes in any form.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he opposes raising income tax rates, but that he is open to increasing tax revenue by reducing the availability of deductions for things like charitable giving and mortgage interest. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) also said Sunday that he would support limiting deductions.

Doing so would violate Grover Norquist's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge," which both men have signed (as have most Republicans in Congress). Under the pledge, "candidates and incumbents solemnly bind themselves to oppose any and all tax increases," according to the Americans for Tax Reform site.

"When you're $16 trillion in debt, the only pledge we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece, and Republicans -- Republicans should put revenue on the table," Graham said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "We're this far in debt. We don't generate enough revenue. Capping deductions will help generate revenue. Raising tax rates will hurt job creation.

"So I agree with Grover, we shouldn't raise rates. But, I think Grover is wrong when it comes to [saying] we can't cap deductions and buy down debt," Graham continued. "I want to buy down debt and cut rates to create jobs, but I will violate the pledge, long story short, for the good of the country, only if Democrats will do entitlement reform."

So by eliminating those

So by eliminating those deductions you would in effect raise taxes on mortgage holders and reduce donations given to charity. Yeah sounds like a plan for economic recovery.

Update: More Top Republicans Are Breaking With Grover Norquist On New Revenues

Brett LoGiurato | Nov. 25, 2012, 1:12 PM

Add Republicans Lindsey Graham, John McCain and Peter King to the list of top party members in Congress who are increasingly breaking with conservative Grover Norquist's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge."

All three said on Sunday talk shows that they are willing to add more tax revenues as part of a deal to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff" in January, a position that is becoming commonplace among Republicans despite the fact that it would violate Norquist's pledge to not raise taxes.

They were only ever pretending to be conservatives...

...and now that pretense is worn thin.

The "read my lips" political party, Republicans in full bloom.

The Republicans are showing their true colors. This is what we would have had if Herr Mitt-serschmidt had been elected. Rather than taxing their brains to find programs and departments to eliminate and actually act like conservative Republicans by cutting spending the Republicans are doubling down to protect the very government that is bankrupting us and destroying America.

Way to go Republicans. Don't tax your brains -- TAX US instead.

Can you count how many natural laws and fundamental principles of the Constitution he violates with impunity in 2 minutes on the floor of our Congress here? I am still dumbfounded every time I watch him speak.

This is no surprise to us is it, really?
Norquist is a poser and his lobbyist pledge was yet another distraction from day one. Gees just read his resume and list of clients if you ever had a question about this. Graham and McCain go without saying. I have to hand it to the Commy/Crony Dems over the these GOP miscreants,,, at least they don't lie about their goals.

If Norquist had half an

If Norquist had half an incline as to what ails this country he would be pushing people to cut spending and reduce the size of government. Instead he wants politicians to sign some arbitrary pledge to beat the beast back with a BB gun. Smoke and mirrors.

Good for Them!

I mean, really, cause I'm not voting for them ever again anyway.

The Constitution and Voting

Two items that have proven useless to stop the rape of America: The Constitution and voting.

"Either the Constitution has authorized such a government as we now have, or it was powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."
Lysander Spooner -

Federal spending in the time

Federal spending in the time of Spooner was only 2% of GDP. In 1912 it was only only 1.75%. During the 125 year era prior to 1913, the US Constitution set up a system unparalleled in human history in regards to human liberty, prosperity, human invention, and low taxes.

The Constitution restrained spending until the States CHANGED the Constitution dramatically in 1913. Even then, the momentum continued on and off until the system seems to have petered out around 2000.

A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for Thomas Jefferson. A vote for Rand Paul is a vote for James Madison.

Federal Spending and reciepts

Federal Spending and reciepts were not very accurately written down prior to really the 1930s.

Even then, by my estimation, if you take out the payroll tax (+ payroll tax payouts), government spending and revenue has remained fairly consistent throughout the years. And by government, I mean federal, state, and local. We've had a low of 14-18%, and today are at about 24-27%.

You can't just throw out two

You can't just throw out two of the biggest expenditures of the federal government and then say spending hasn't really risen

Because that spending is tied

Because that spending is tied to the revenue that is recieved.

What? Just because the

What? Just because the government designates a special tax to fund each program doesn't mean they aren't expenditures or shouldn't be counted. The government is free to spend those revenues, btw, on what ever it wants, and historically has done so. Nowadays, those taxes can't even cover current expenditures

Currently

Thanks for the above - good info. Many today are looking for THE ANSWER to the depressing state of affairs. Best so far seems to be secession. Doubtful that any state governor will be found who has the cojones to make it happen.

Typical bullshit...

Lets raise taxes because cutting spending in any real way is evil.

Just knock these fuckers off already. Replace them.

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution, inevitable.

revenues are not the problem

When will the GOP ever learn. They are a one trick pony... somehow keeping taxes exactly when they are will solve everything. meanwhile spending goes through the roof without one word about that.
And what is with Gram saying we are going to buy back debt with the extra revenue? You mean use it to pay interest on our current debt while we rack up a trillion+ year over year.

They wont and its why the republican neo con leadership

of McConnel, Boener, Graham and McCain need to go

That is why they call them, "Neo CONS".

Graham and Chambliss come up for re-election in 2014. If we are still here (and I have my doubts), we better find an acceptable candidate to challenge them in the primaries.

I will donate

I will donate serious cash to a moneybomb against ANY of those 4 candidates. And they don't even serve my state.
