Military May Prosecute Troops Who Try To Commit Suicide

(Tim Dominick) Marine Corps Pvt. Lazzaric T. Caldwell slit his wrists and spurred a legal debate that’s consuming the Pentagon, as well as the nation’s top military appeals court.

On Tuesday, the court wrestled with the wisdom of prosecuting Caldwell after his January 2010 suicide attempt. Though Caldwell pleaded guilty, he and his attorneys now question his original plea and the broader military law that makes “self-injury” a potential criminal offense. The questions resonate amid what Pentagon leaders have called an “epidemic” of military suicides.

“If suicide is indeed the worst enemy the armed forces have,” Senior Judge Walter T. Cox III said, “then why should we criminalize it when it fails?”

Eyes Roll...

Oh dear God, the abject stupidity of the collective...it is becoming mind numbing. Yes lets deter people killing them selves by promising punishment for the attempt. Isn't this what Catholics are told from the beginning, that suicide slams heavens gates shut? (I don't know about other Christian beliefs as my indoctrination was down this path alone.)

Seems even that threat hardly stands in the way of someone determined to jump ship. Now the military is to deal with their "problem" by threatening all who fail in their attempts? So now the message is "Don't use pills or sharp edge weapons...they are unapproved...the only approved methodology as to the UCMJ will be ingested bullets and grenades?

Jeez.

Finally this election thing is over and we can get on with the collapse of our currency forthwith!

I would say they will start

I would say they will start making sure they don't fail. We may start seeing extremely gruesome suicides to make sure against survival.

Civilian law makes attempted

Civilian law makes attempted suicide illegal in almost every state. Under military law I'd imagine its easier to prosecute because when you sign on to military service you become Govt property, thus the reason they call them "GIs" which means Govt Issued.

The reason it's often against the law

is because it's a form of attempted murder.

"Sui + cide" = "self + kill".

Usually, attempted murder is a person trying to kill a different person. In this case, it's a person trying to kill the selfsame person.

As for military prosecution, you are correct that the government views military personnel as it's (expensive) property and they don't appreciate it being destroyed - unless they're doing the destroying.

Then Stop Using Soldiers As Vaccine Pin-cushions!

Perhaps if the Government stopped making vaccine pin-cushions out of the soldiers then their minds and bodies would be in a better state to withstand the torture that their jobs put them under. The evidence that vaccines (like many other drugs) cause deep depression and other extreme behaviour and medical issues is overwhelming. Ask the Gulf War Syndrome people!
