Palestine is recognized as a state.

UN General Assembly votes 138 for, 9 against, 41 abstain. Palestine is recognized as a state!

Thanks to RonPaul2012Supoorter for this video:

OK Thanks

Will check my Bible to see what 1948 Israel looked like. I thought they had the whole deal.

As well the 1967 war was about giving the Sinai back only. Again, will check the maps again. Has been some time since I ha ve followed the Med Sea coast wars.

Denying the occupation from 1967 to Today. WOW

It didn't get recognized as a

It didn't get recognized as a state. It was a symbolic vote, not legal one. So the title is misleading.

Second, you all now recognize and praise what the UN does? Weird... When they do bad stuff they should be abolished, when they do "good" stuff they are celebrated.. weird..

Can't have it both ways. Maybe that is just me...

If you disagree with me on anything you are not a real libertarian...

No, it did get recognized as

No, it did get recognized as a state, albeit as a nonmember observer STATE! It was already an observer. This is why this was such a big deal.

You do realize that the UN partitioned Palestine without asking the Palestinians if it was ok with them don't you?

"The UN is evil and has no business interfering in the affairs..

...of other countries, unless it's something I agree with"

To call this idea "dangerous" or a "slippery slope" would be an understatement. If the UN is wrong, it's wrong. It's that simple. By endorsing its authority the one time you agree with it, you are endorsing the very existence of an immoral institution and its actions the other 99% of the time.

In the international world

States are either recognized or they're not, simple as that. What this vote shows is that most of the countries around the world ARE recognizing Palestine

Victims care...

Israel has been committing genocided on Palestinians for the last decade. When Palestine begged the I.C.C. to punish Israel for war crimes, their request was denied because PALESTINE WAS NOT OBSERVED.

Now they are observed, so let A$$-in-yahoo commit more atrocities.. and he'll have 138 countries to worry about.

They that give up liberty for security deserve neither.

This point was already raised

Countless "states" have committed countless attrocities on other "states" to no consequence. It has nothing to do with the statehood of the victim or aggressor. It has everything to do with the political motivations and whims of the countries in these groups.

I find it odd that so many DP'ers are suddenly pro-UN and pro-ICC when they think it might negatively affect Israel, but the other 364 days of the year everyone says these are criminal and illegitimate organizations that threaten national sovereignty.

looks like someone is going

looks like someone is going to get freed the shit out of.

To OP: Please add this link (list of countries)

List of ALL UN countries that: http://twitdoc.com/1N02

a) Voted YES
b) Voted NO
c) Abstained

#9 countries voted NO: Israel, US, Canada, Czech Rep, Palau, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Panama, Nauru

LMAO at those "islands" supporting Israel. Even Europeans are MOVING AWAY from zionist.

Europeans voted YES: Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Cyprus, Malta, Portugal

The rest abstained (UK, Germany, etc...)

What is everyone celebrating exactly?

The UN (an immoral organization hated by every person on this website) passed a resolution conferring a legitimacy they never had to confer onto a new political class which will all too eagerly use and abuse it's citizens, just like every other state on earth. This is the same UN that stands idly by when people like Assad or Pol Pot murder their own citizens by the tens of thousands (or millions) and does nothing about various territorial disputes in central and eastern Asia and Africa, but when it comes to this specific minuscule piece of dirt, they vote 138-9? And then you all start unquestioningly waving your pom-poms around just because its against the favor of Israel? Don't you people know enough about the UN to look at it with a little more suspicion than this?

One of the top-voted articles on here the other day was Ron Paul saying we need to stay out of the affairs of Gaza, but here you all are cheering the exact opposite when it's being done by other countries. Does anyone really think this will lead to a reduction in bloodshed? Doesn't anyone question the motivations behind this action?

Does no one see the irony in this vote? Every state on earth was formed by conquest and occupation, and yet in this specific instance 138 hypocrites are attempting to legitimize something they themselves have spent countless innocent lives fighting against when it occurred on their own soil that they "possessed" at any given point in history.

Why everyone so happy?

1) Simple. In 2009, Israel committed WAR CRIMES to the children in Gaza for 2-3 weeks.

2) After the war ceased, Palestine went to ICC (International Criminal Court) in order to charge Israel leaders for war crimes.

3) ICC said NO because Palestine is not a recognized state.

4) Today, Palestine is recognized by the UN. So, the next time Netanyahu or Ehud commits WAR CRIMES or HOLOCAUST against Palestinian children and women, the Palestinian can bring the Israelis leaders to ICC.

Simple no?

This is the old standby argument for Obama supporters. Ill say 'Obama used a drone to assassinate a teenage American boy without charges trial jury or oversight" and they'll say "ya..but...bush did bad things x, y, and z!" This is what's known as "two wrongs don't make a right". We could go back and forth listing times when Israel did this bad thing to Palestine, and the time when Palestine did this bad thing to Israel, and on and on and on, but that doesn't address the issue that's being discussed.

Israel's crimes have no bearing on the wisdom of this decision, or the hypocrisy of those who voted for it. Do you have any idea how many war crimes have gone unprosecuted by the ICC? I'm not being rhetorical, I'm actually asking you. Do you really want me to make you a list of all the human rights violations and massacres that have occurred by and in "recognized states" where the ICC and international community did nothing? I find it odd you advocate any sort of international judicial system. Would you support them coming into the US and prosecuting Americans at their discretion?

You don't care about war crimes--you care about Israeli war crimes. You don't care about independence, you care about Palestinian independence. Why is that?

Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito

"you care about Palestinian independence. Why is that?"

because Palestine IS THE LAST country living in under an apartheid regime.

It is not me who says this. It is the word of Rev Desmond Tutu (Nobel Peace Prize winner and Anti-Apartheid fighter).

Are you drunk?

You said you were excited because now that Palestine is a state, Israel will be held accountable for its crimes. I mentioned the fact that countless war crimes have been committed by states on other states and on their own people to NO consequence whatsoever. Your response? "........"

I typed out several paragraphs of arguments, and your entire response was one little out of context quote. I said "You don't care about Independence, you care about Palestinian independence". When you cut off half of a thought, the sentence means something different. You didn't answer my question. Why do you care so disproportionately about human rights issues in Palestine when they're hands aren't exactly free of blood either, and when countless other groups have faced (and currently face) far worse fates? How many posts have you made championing the Basque separatists? Or the Irish? Or the Catalans?

When Bush was in office, people accused him of war crimes and marched in the street. When Obama continued or expanded his policies, those same people said nothing. They weren't against wars of aggression--they were against republican wars of aggression. You can't just start and stop your principles along arbitrary lines of political parties or national identities.

The action of Israel on palestinian affects us

directly. it is called blowback. For example, in Congo there is currently a civil war. Will it have any affect to us, americans? no.

But in the case of Palestinian issue, we are affected because we put our nose in other ppl business. If we followed RP Foreign policy and let the Arabs n Israel fight it out on their own (instead of being bias towards Israel), we do not need to have this discussion

"If we followed RP foreign policy...

And let them fight it out on their own"

This coming from the guy cheer leading intervention by the UN? Noninterventionism doesn't just mean WE should stay out of other people's business, it means EVERYBODY should stay out of other people's business. This is like if you say "I don't want to steal this piece of candy because it would be wrong for me to do. But I'm perfectly fine if someone else steals it. " Stealing is wrong, whether its you that's doing it or someone else.

You criticize the US for being biased towards Israel, when you yourself are biased towards Palestine. The problem isn't that the US is biased towards Israel, the problem is being biased towards any country.

When you're done celebrating something you dont understand and you put your pom-poms down, go back and re-read my comments and see if you actually have a response for them.

Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito

then why aren't you upset

then why aren't you upset with the failure of the UN to renounce its recogntion of every single state? be consistent! Why not be happy that the Palestinians at least now have some protection?

Because unlike you (and apparently 90% of everyone else)

I don't recognize the legitimacy of the UN and I don't think their opinion is in any way relevant.

If the UN was intellectually consistent or honest, every single country would have to pass a resolution condemning itself.

Every state on earth is the result of violent conquest, so the UN's selective outrage with Israel is a little ridiculous. As I said before, it's like a jury full of murderers passing judgement on a murderer, when dozens of other (far worse) killers run around with impunity.

I really expected DP'ers to examine the UN's actions with a little more scrutiny than this. This thread looks like it got pulled out of a Daily Beast article.

Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito

why I am happy.

Yesterday, Israel could do what it wanted without consequence. Now, they will declare 138 enemies with one act of childish behavior.

They that give up liberty for security deserve neither.

Now it will have to answer for its crimes just like the US

Oh wait...

Czech Republic against?!?!

Czech Republic voted against this resolution? What the hell was that about, are they a US-Israeli puppet state now?!?!

Immoral funding of Military Industrial Complex by Federal Reserve and US taxation system must stop!!!! End illegal/unconstitutional wars! Preserve US currency!

WTG !!

I don't think they recognize the UN as a legimate governing body imo.

Just like the their strong opposition to the EU along with the UK, it is probably the same sentiments with the UN.

They probably vote No on almost everything lol

Clint, "Contiguous"

I caught that, too... Wonder how they plan to arrange that...
