Ronald Reagan's "A Time For Choosing" Speech 1964

I've watched this speech a few times now and, up to the 23:23 mark, am right on board with it.

But the last five minutes just sound like war mongering to me. I don't believe we needed to "directly confront the enemy" and I wonder what others here think.

Also, was Reagan reading a teleprompter or did he deliver that speech with just the notes he scarcely consulted?
