Half of Democrats and a Quarter of Republicans Approve Socialism

That's what a recent Gallop poll reveals.
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/11/30/Half-Of-D...

A recent Pew poll showed that more than half of people aged 18-29 had a favorable view of socialism. http://www.dailypaul.com/261434/americans-aged-18-29-have-a-...

What is the appeal of socialism?

The concept of socialism appeals on a very base level- one that doesn't require much economic thought.

Socialism appeals to the concept of fairness almost on a primal level-Get the government to force people to hand over their money for the common good.

For the socialist no understanding that personal and economic liberty are intertwined is required. http://www.fee.org/the_freeman/detail/indivisible-liberty-pe...

No understanding of how wealth is created is needed. For the socialist, just an understanding that some one else has what you don't have and you can petition the government to get it is the theme.

Concepts of government corruption, cronyism, waste, fraud and abuse are easily dismissed by the socialist-better to let such a government have the money than some rich dude.

The socialist utopia is paid for via taxing and spending and in its more recent incarnation of printing (by the Federal Reserve) and spending.

"Who to tax?" the socialist asks. "the rich, of course" Why? "because they can afford it!"

The rich can also afford to burn one dollar bills in their fire places, toss money out of windows, save it, spend it, or invest it.

The socialist decides that they know best what the rich should do with their money-turn it over to the government.

Socialists brim with envy-See Ron Paul's Liberty Defined on Envy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAIyc6NXV0A

Socialsts would rather live in a country where the top earners make $40,000 and the poorest $10,000, vs. a society where the top earners make millions and the poorest make $25,000 because it fairer.

Socialist fail to recognize that the more rich people a free market society has, the richer all of its citizens are -its an indication of a society producing an abundance of goods and services at a decent price.

Wealth disparity is a red herring.

The poorest in America are wealthier than the vast majority of the people living in abject "fair" poverty in Communist Cuba.

I could go on but let's hear what you have to say.

Or read what Mises has to say in the Anti-Capitalist Mentality or Socialism

or what Frank Chodorov has to say in Income Tax: The Root of all Evil

Indeed.

Thing is ... we have TO FIGHT BOTH at the same time, I'm afraid.

Because they are fundamentally nothing but the same.

Beyond the rhetoric procrastination, anyway.

Ron Paul on Socialists-Let em have at it but not with our money

Ron Paul makes the point that in a free society socialists can get together if they want but not with the money of the unwilling

In this video he also makes the point that economic and personal liberty are intertwined

Well, they've been taught to like it all their lives

I'd bet it's closer to 99% on both sides because Americans in this generation are all socialist/communists to a greater or lesser degree. Old conservatives lap up their welfare just like young liberals and all seek government intervention in controlling the lives of others. In fact, capitalism itself is a necessary first stage of socialism because it puts control of the resources in the hands of those who will ultimately run the system. We might as well all go get foodstamps and enjoy the ride.

Terrific point

Socialism needs the resources that capitalism provides
And you are right that both sides take from the government
Socialism for me but not for Thee but don't call what I get from government socialism

Socialism is about the collective good

Socialism is all about the collective good. Liberty is all about individual rights. This country was founded on the principle that individuals are endowed by their creator with unalienable rights. Once the collective good rises to prominence, you need people to decide what the collective good is. They decide for everyone because obviously the collective good must be the same for everyone. Liberty cannot exist with any form of socialism.

Schools are basically an arm of the state to train children to support the state. If you attended public schools any time since the 30s, you have been indoctrinated in socialism. John Dewy the father of modern education said the role of government school is to train children to take their place in a collective society.

The rows of chairs with regular bells, sharing crayons and sharing assignments, peer pressure, values clarification, discussions designed to shame dissenters, - all are designed to indoctrinate children in socialism. We must abolish government education if we want to abolish socialism. - Ron Paul was right to want to end the department of education.

You are right and the dept of education only was created

In 1979 I think
Tom woods makes the point how perverse it is that all public schools aggrandize the state and it's leaders

Is there any place left...

...on this planet anymore where one can live without this evil practice?

Excellent question

And one I ponder often
The US states are not the answer as they can not escape the power of the Federal Government
Is there a country or place that preserves liberty
The smaller the place like a city state is perhaps the answer
Here is the Heritage Foundation list of free countries

I saw that before and it is...

...quite disturbing. I guess economic freedom would be the greatest indicator of all around liberty. How sad we are falling. I often wonder if the corruption in our leadership is a reflection of our society in general. I really don't believe our elections are "real", but I must say, our overall society seems to be so naive about reality and television seems to work like a "one-eyed demon" for making many into zombies of fantasy.

The top two were city states

Hong Kong and Singapore
People are not meant to be governed along with 300 million others
There is no representation then just tyranny and corruption

More accurately. Socialism in the USA ... since 1910, actually

Socialism idea's inception, as a synonym for central planning of resources, including monetary and human resources, occurred in the U.S. in 1910, actually :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jekyll_Island#Planning_of_the_F...

Socialism central planning, with central bankers and statist bureaucrats and other officials as the central planners, was enacted on December 23, 1913 :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve_Act

This was 11 month after a pre-requisite device had been implemented (and promising to last at the time) :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16th_amendment#Pollock_nullified

A promise very successfully kept, and much more, way beyond the most wishful expectations *** :

http://taxfoundation.org/article/summary-latest-federal-indi...

Bear.

*** the expectations of the BLOOD AND SWEAT sucker worms in various gov't offices, that is

P.S.

How to defeat socialism ?

Easy :

Exactly first it started with a few

Programs, a few regulations and some taxes and it just keeps growing and you see how it is now consuming itself in endless spending and debt

FDR clearly accelerated socialism

With the New Deal but the progressives from the turn of the century Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson set the train in motion as did the direct election of senators, the income tax, prohibition and the creation of the Federal Reserve and the centrally planned economy .

socialism is the classic 'nice dream'

that doesn't work in reality or even when you examine it at all closely.

unfortunately the socialist dream is a reality

in many countries while true liberty is a dream

Two words: Envy and Ignorance

and my generation is full of both.

There's many different reasons why the young are turning to socialism. Here are just four:

1. Rebellion: It makes young adults feel good if they can convince themselves they are intellectually and morally superior to their elders. Most older people lived through the Cold War and vehemently oppose socialism. It therefore makes them feel good to convince themselves that "old farts" just don't know what socialism is.

2. Academia: The public school system is biased in favor of the New Deal and Great Society. From 1st grade through college, American students are fed straight-up propaganda.

3. Media: It doesn't matter if its a national news network, Hollywood movies, or PBS documentaries, the media in this country has been ardently pro-socialism since the 1930s. It has always had a minimal impact on public opinion, but, the reason why it's finally CAPTURING public opinion today is because so many voters today grew up in single-parent homes, with mothers who had to work two jobs just to make ends meet, so, the kids did not have quality time with their parents, so, there was no counter-balance to combat the anti-family, anti-individualism, pro-government propaganda they got in school.

4. Fairness: This goes back to the break up of the family unit. As an entire generation grows up either in broken homes, partially broken homes, or around a bunch of kids that grow up in broken homes, when they grow up, their attitude toward the government will tend to be similar to a child's attitude toward his parents. A child expects his parents to (1)provide for him, (2)make sure his brothers and sisters treat him fairly, and (3)let him do what he wants. Those that think millennials are more libertarian than other previous generations draw that conclusion from number (3) and ignore numbers (1) and (2).
