The Christmas Truce

It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I, German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and fraternized with "the enemy" along two-thirds of the Western Front (a crime punishable by death in times of war). German troops held Christmas trees up out of the trenches with signs, "Merry Christmas."

"You no shoot, we no shoot." Thousands of troops streamed across a no-man's land strewn with rotting corpses. They sang Christmas carols, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared rations, played football, even roasted some pigs. Soldiers embraced men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if the top brass forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.

A shudder ran through the high command on either side. Here was disaster in the making: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals on both sides declared this spontaneous peacemaking to be treasonous and subject to court martial. By March 1915 the fraternization movement had been eradicated and the killing machine put back in full operation. By the time of the armistice in 1918, fifteen million would be slaughtered.

Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce. On Christmas Day, 1988, a story in the Boston Globe mentioned that a local FM radio host played "Christmas in the Trenches," a ballad about the Christmas Truce, several times and was startled by the effect. The song became the most requested recording during the holidays in Boston on several FM stations. "Even more startling than the number of requests I get is the reaction to the ballad afterward by callers who hadn't heard it before," said the radio host. "They telephone me deeply moved, sometimes in tears, asking, 'What the hell did I just hear?' "

You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It gives us a glimpse of the world as we wish it could be and says, "This really happened once." It reminds us of those thoughts we keep hidden away, out of range of the TV and newspaper stories that tell us how trivial and mean human life is. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really could be different.

While not with a Christmas theme

I'm reminded of No Man's Land, a fantastic film depicting the inanity of war, It takes place during the Bosnian War. Won Best Foreign Film in 2001. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Man's_Land_(2001_film)

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

Bump for an excellent reminder.

Hope this Christmas message is repeated over and over this year.

Best wishes to you LL for all your efforts! Keep warm.

Merry Christmas my friend

Your comment lifted my spirits.

Such a noteworthy event, and so few know the story.

And it seems someone here has a vendetta against ll and is using this beautiful post as an excuse to act on their warlike inclinations. Perhaps there is fear of a similar event ending the war-profit machine in the halls of the warmongers, and ll hit a nerve with this post?

Vendetta against LL

I suspect some might have double accounts here just for their job of down-voting.

"And some here bring the attacks on themselves."

Your whole persona says: Kick Me and YOU created it and continue daily to reinforce that and sadly you soured way too many people here to ever gain back any semblance of true respect here. You would be better off just leaving.

And you suspect wrong on account manipulation and were informed of this by a moderator yesterday.

This kind of activity (multiple accounts for voting) is watched for, and shut down when it is found. I personally hunt around for it on slow days or when suspicion arises, and I know other mods here do too on occasion. If the voting system is abused, the abuser's account(s) are removed when found. TOR won't provide you with immunity either. We'll find it, figure it out, and eliminate it at some point. We do it often enough.

For keeping the peace sake, let that be known.

It takes 2 to tango

If you do not like a post, do not bump it. It is just that easy, and yet you keep this fight going. Why? Can you just admit that you work for DHS? Divide and rule...
Hey, that ridiculous accusation can go both ways.... Funny thing about attacking people rather than searching for concepts that enlighten us all. We COULD lift each other up, ignore "bad" posts and just stop using the "downvote" button. Silence is a more effective way to make a bad thread go away than attacking a poster.

Such a powerful statement these soldiers made

Thank you my friend.

Such a powerful statement these soldiers made placing their own lives in danger of being executed for "fraternity with the enemy" they stood tall for Love for humanity.

It's hard to read that article and not have watery eyes...

Gigi just imagine if all 7 Billion human beings on earth read this article -- we would have world wide peace and Liberty within mere hours.

Unfortunately, even if those billions would take the time

to read it, TPTB would still continue their business as usual. "Peace on Earth TO men of good will" is the correct passage. I think men (and women, of course) of good will do find peace within themselves.

Stories like this do give me a glimmer of hope. There's a film, "Silent Night", a true story, about WWII in Germany during Christmas. It is retold by a man who is the child of the woman who took the American and German soldiers into her home one Christmas. I think you'd like that one, too.

Thanks for sharing that men of good will story with us, LL.

Why someone just down-voted this?

Can you have the courage to explain why you down-voted this anti-war article?

Tell me why would you do this.
Is it because of your work?
Do you work in a factory that makes weapons bombs?

Tom, don't worry about that

I just voted it up.

Have you ever seen the video for Paul McCartney's song, "Pipes of Peace?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVK_mJrLbmY

It came out when I was in high school, and MTV was new. I saw it many times. I had no idea at the time that it was based on a true story. It is still a wonderful song, and a wonderful video, based on the story you relayed above.

Merry Christmas friend!

Thank you for that link.
I will post it for others on Twitter etc.

When I read that story I just posted I was thinking of you and of the wonderful people in your city in Boston.
There is something about the freedom loving Boston.
Ron Paul received the most votes in his first presidential run in 1988 in your city.

Here is my fave Christian metal song for you.

"freedom loving Boston"

Thanks for the laugh.

hmm

Can you explain?
Info - links?

I check traffic to Liberty oriented sites and Boston area often leads....so perhaps you mean Boston the way it used to be?

I was born and raised in Boston

In fact, I just moved from there in the spring (part of the NH FSP).

If Boston were filled with such "freedom loving" people, MA wouldn't have some of the most repressive gun laws and outrageous taxes in the union. Let's not forget all the traffic cameras, either.

Half of the buildings in my old neighborhood are filled with multi-generational families of welfare recipients who drive $40,000 SUVs, and the average person cares more about the Patriots and the Red Sox than what's happening in the governor's office.

Are there liberty-minded people in Boston? Absolutely, but it's not a "freedom loving" city my any means, not in this century anyway.

Thanks

That is depressing to hear...

You have the NHL Boston Bruins goalie icon who supports Ron Paul and refused to meet with Obama after winning the Stanley Cup.....

So you moved to NH?

There is a *little* hope there...

Don't get me wrong, it's not as bad as say, San Fransisco (yet), but MA is a pretty out of control place in general. I will say that Boston is a relatively "safe" place as far as violent crime goes (compared to other major cities).

Yeah, moved to NH this spring partially for the FSP and partially for family reasons. It's much cleaner here, the people are a bit more alert and self-sustaining.

NH is great

All the people I know who live there tell me they would not move anywhere else.

Cheers from Toronto Canada!
Many freedom loving Americans settled here in the last 11 years.
