Good news or Bad news? Jim DeMint leaving post.

Washington (CNN) — Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina will resign from his Senate seat as of Dec. 31 to take over as head of the Heritage Foundation, his office announced Thursday.

"It's been an honor to serve the people of South Carolina in United States Senate for the past eight years, but now it's time for me to pass the torch to someone else and take on a new role in the fight for America's future," he said in a statement.

Elected in 2004, he was re-elected in 2010. His term was not up until 2016. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor. A special election will be held in 2014 for the last two years of his term.

DeMint had always planned on leaving after two terms, according to a DeMint adviser.

"This move puts him in a powerful position to further advance fiscal conservative principles," the adviser said.

SC could do a lot worse than Jim DeMint

DeMint is not Ron Paul, but he is one of the 3-4 closest to Paul in the Senate. Rand, Mike Lee, and then probably DeMint. If the best choice gets picked to replace him, it could still be bad, because then we may be more likely to get stuck with Mrs. Graham again. I really want to see Lindsey gone!

Well, I will never forget how

Well, I will never forget how he once betrayed Ron, but he has been mostly a good voice for Conservatism. He is still probably corrupt, unless he has changed. I like what the Heritage Foundation does, for the most part. They are really trying to keep the Constitution alive. They do not understand its foreign policy, but most of the rest of it..Jim may do good there...

Impossible to know if this is good or bad

I am sorry to see him leave. We could have used him in the Congress for the rest of his term. But he's leaving so he could teach and otherwise spread the conservative message. In that way, he may have more success than he would in cess-pool known as Congress, where his stands may be more symbolic than not. Still, congress won't change if only the corrupt men stay in it, and like it or not, Congress is messing up our country. Still, I respect deMint's decision and I wish him the best.

If DeMint is replaced by a principled, liberty-minded person, hurray for us! If he's replaced by a neocon, we've definitely lost.

At least he has moral

At least he has moral standards to remove himself from the position. Probably had some encouragement from Boehner and Friends, though. Have a lot of respect for him.

Maybe he can change the direction of Heritage Foundation away from the neocons.
