"Grandpaul" - My 4 year old never ceases to amaze me

Here is a quick little story that I hope you will find as inspiring as I did.

A few nights ago my wife, myself and my two daughters (4 and 8 months) were seated at the dinner table as we do every day. I cannot for the life of me remember exactly what it was we were talking about but it led me to say; "truth is a hard thing to come by these days, as long as I've been following this stuff I've only seen or hear one politician tell the truth". Wifey says sarcastically, "and who would that be?" Before I could even get it out, the four year old says, looking at her mother (this is what I thought I heard), "grandpaw silly". A little confused, because she calls my dad "granddad" and my wife's dad "pop-pop"; I pried her to figure out who she was talking about. She says you know daddy, the man who tells the truth and who's on your computer. My oh my how much these little ones soak up. What she actually said was "grandpaul silly", you know daddy the man that doesn't like fighting and always tells the truth. I said, "you mean Ron Paul" and she said yeah "grandpaul" I was stopped in my tracks. I think time actually stopped for a moment. You have to understand how off guard this caught me. I've never talked to her about politics...she four for crying out loud. She either picked it up from me watching RP you tubes at the breakfast table or talking with my friends or my wife. And where did she come up with "grandpaul." I've never said it or heard anyone say it. Grandpaul! does it get any better than that?

Then I got to thinking, which is sometimes a dangerous thing. I'm 34 and never really had any grandparents to speak of. My parents were older when they had me so they had passed on before I really got to spend any time with them. Ron Paul, and I'm just realizing this now, has sort of been the older wiser man I could look up to, sort of like a grand father.

After dinner she wanted to see Grandpaul, so I obliged an put on the recent "RP on Iran sanctions video" because it was the most recent one I watched. Of course she had no idea what was going on so 45 seconds in I she wanted to know what he was talking about. I basically explained to her that he was telling people that fighting is bad and that we shouldn't be bossy and tell other people what to do all the time. She says "yeah fighting is bad, and bossy sue is bad too" Bossy sue a term we use when she gets a little "bossy" with her friends.

Then I really got to thinking. What about a website: grandpaul.com that would teach kids, the basics of individual liberty and freedom using children's stories, games...stuff that kids are into. I'm not the techy type and I'm way to busy to even think about it any further but who knows, maybe one of you DP's might think it a good idea and actually have the skills to pull it off.

Anyways, thanks for listening. Hopefully I didn't bore you to tears with my little personal story.

**UPDATE**--Dp'er Robhino runs with it!

Ron Paul 2012

I forgot to tell y'all this cute story.

At the Veteran's Rally for Ron Paul I was standing in line with a young mother from the Asheville (NC) Revolution. She had brought her tiny lil spitfire daughter who appeared to be about 2-1/2. The little girl was buzzing all over the place with excitement and she'd do a little dance when you asked her if she loved Ron Paul. The mother told me when they pulled up into the conference center parking lot the little girl said "Mommy why does everybody have a sticker of Grandpa?" The Mother smiled and said to me "She thinks he's 'Grandpa'". I know how she feels. :)

GrandPaul was taken by some guy named Paul Grand. :(

I haven't messed with the website yet, but I did secure the domain www.grandpaul.com. I'm still brainstorming on how to develop that. Feel free to suggest ideas on any of this! The creativity on the DP is endless!

Please like and share and FB to help build the audience! Also, if you have any stories, tips, resources, etc. to add, please add them on the FB page!

Where are all the homeschoolers out there?! The page will be needing regular content if we're going to be effective and popular.

My contribution

Here is one picture that you can add to your website:

http://public.fotki.com/SmilingAleks/ron-paul/

My mom illustrated it for the campaign. I sent it to the campaign, but it did not get through :(

Precious story, and great idea

I, for one, would love to chip in to help you buy that URL address.

You can purchase software which will step-by-step help you to build a simple but professional-looking website. Once you have your format and content ready to launch, web hosting can be found as cheap as $9.95 a month.

It would be a great activity to do with your family. Learn about Liberty - learn about computers, all while enlightening others.

Once you get up and running, like the poster said below - you could link to recommended books, music, host appropriate ads, and even sell some products from your site and generate some income from it.

Liberty or Death

Reminded me of a little bit

more than four years ago... This was beautiful. Thank you for posting this. It brought a smile to my tired face.

This is

PERFECT

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquence. It is force. And force, like fire, is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." George Washington

a childrens theme

like Bob the Builder, or barney etc etc and make it into a Libertarian message for kids. Make it good stories that can explain how populist, collectivist ideas turn out bad.

We could sell...

We could sell liberty children's books and liberty for dummies (adults) coffee table books that put complex issues and current events in simple terms and pictures. I started a little coffee table book on liberty a couple years ago that I never finished! Looks like a reason to get back on that project!

Heck, if you want to think large scale, what about textbooks for homeschoolers? Are there companies that already do this?

Thanks again

for the post. Related to my comments below, my idea of a Ron Paul character a la "Crinkleroot," I found an Amazon site that lets you "look inside" a couple pages of some of the Crinkleroot books. With children your daughter's age, this is along the lines of what I thought might work perfectly. Again, just an idea. http://www.amazon.com/Crinkleroots-Guide-Knowing-Butterflies...

This is one of the things that keeps me going

This is what keeps me hopeful, is the youngest generation. I hope all the college kids get off their butts and take action ASAP. Because most of my generation is lost in space, not caring about politics in the least other than those caught up in the jail and prison system at some point in time. And most can't vote. I'm stuck between the boomers and college kids.

Most Kids Learn Libertarianism

The problem is, they learn it with an exception for government.

Of course, children have to listen to and obey authoritarians, so the trick is to make sure they know when to do so, and when not to do so, as they mature, so that they can function as free human beings by the the time they're adults.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

If you're serious about the website idea

It would be wise to take your proposed domain name off your post because people like to steal ideas and park domains right off the bat.

Edit: Nevermind, too many already put the domain in their posts, someone is going to see it no matter what now. Get that domain now if you want it.

I don't want the domain...

just throwing the idea out there...if someone "steals" it, I just hope they do a good job with it! I hope whatever it turns out to be, it's free and stays true to the message of peace and individual liberty.

Liberty or Death

Your wish is my command!

I have not been one to let down when fighting for liberty! It will always be free, but I'm sure you wouldn't object to trying to make a profit off my labor. After all, if we were all millionaires, this country would be a better place and we wouldn't be trapped in the 8-5 M-F working for other people!

What a story! Thanks for telling it!

I love the idea of Grandpaul.com,

my comment below, notwithstanding (which is at the core of the most successful N/K program I'm aware of, called by its founder "Education Towards Freedom" - a private school movement with now an 80+ year track record and what has become international in scope).

And so, giving this some more thought, *if* bparker189 had in mind this being specifically for little ones his daughter's age (say 4-7 years old), here's one idea. (I envision it drawn. Actually, I envision it as an animated cartoon.) "Grandpaul" could be this grandfatherly man you maybe first see in the kitchen with "Grandcarol." He's enjoying those chocolate chip cookies that she makes just for him. As I see it, Grandpaul narrates everything and just tells stories, in the voice and language you would use telling a story to a 4, 5, 6, 7-year old. His stories *would* begin, "Once upon a time... and he'd just tell stories about the founding of America, digressing with little anecdotes to put things *into* the sphere of reference of a preschooler. (I'm thinking of BossySue, from the anecdote.) I guess I'm reminded of those GREAT Crinkleroot books!!! In that series, this lovable woodsman-type character (who is a tall-tale teller and claims to have been raised by bees :)) takes you around and points out all different kinds of interesting things about nature. You really feel as if he's talking to YOU. https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT-xFOO... Anyway, I hope to one day see a few Grandpaul videos on you-tube!

Grandpaul for President!

Out of the mouths of babes. Yes, but wouldn't it be nice to have someone in the White House with experience, knowledge and WISDOM.

The two morals of this cute story are:
1. Watch what you say in front of children - negative things, and
2. Watch what you say in front of children - positive things. As they used to say to obliquely to warn a fellow adult that we children were within earshot: "Little pitchers have big ears."

Personally - just my 2 cents, at that age, when children (as is normal and appropriate) do not yet have concepts of geography or history but, rather, live in "the here and now," I think it's important to keep teaching within their sphere of reference and/or without specifics. Fairy tales, depicting different virtues (goodness, courage, truth, beauty, love.... and their opposites), with always a challenge and different means by which that challenge is overcome (work, cleverness, resourcefulness...) along with justice prevailing, are the perfect fare in my opinion to give children the foundation for later learning about more abstract concepts. (Also helps to provide them with a sense of security.) I'm talking about stories that begin "Once upon a time..." and end with "They all lived happily ever after." Fairytales are filled with all sorts of archetypal images and symbology that don't need to be explained but go in a soul level, so to speak. They do *support* the concepts that underpin liberty and freedom.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

I think it's a great idea!

My 3 and 5 year olds call him that too and I have never corrected them because I think it's fitting.

Also, my hubby is a programmer... I'll run this by him and let you know what he says. :)
