Tis' the Season to RememberSubmitted by Libera_me on Mon, 12/10/2012 - 19:41
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or just Winter Break, this season has a few lessons for us. With more familiarity with the story of the Christmas of 1776, we can see some ties between Hanukkah and the Patriots' first Christmas.
The Patriots were out gunned, out financed, and occupied by the statist British. The British were, like the Syrians, the greatest military power of the day. Not even the people living in the colonies were all aligned with the Patriots, either. They were as divided as the Jews were in the time of the Maccabees. In the time of the Maccabees, there were those who stood with the Syrians. A few irate supporters of Freedom of Religion were willing to stand against the tide of 'loyalists' to Syria, just as a few Patriots were willing to sign their names to the inflammatory document that would be called the Declaration of Independence.
In spite of the odds against both groups, the minority report was proven right, and the Maccabees won the Temple back, and the Patriots won their freedom.
So take heart! Miracles do happen, the minority is often right, and gains the victory when persistant.
"It does not take a majority to prevail,..but rather an irate tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." ~~ Samuel Adams
