Why Socialism Failed

By Mark J. Perry :

"Socialism is THE BIG LIE of the twentieth century. While it promised prosperity, equality, and security, it delivered poverty, misery, and tyranny. Equality was achieved only in the sense that everyone was equal in his or her misery.

In the same way that a Ponzi scheme or chain letter initially succeeds but eventually collapses, socialism may show early signs of success. But any accomplishments quickly fade as the fundamental deficiencies of central planning emerge. It is the initial illusion of success that gives government intervention its pernicious, seductive appeal. In the long run, socialism has always proven to be a formula for tyranny and misery.

A pyramid scheme is ultimately unsustainable because it is based on faulty principles. Likewise, collectivism is unsustainable in the long run because it is a flawed theory. Socialism does not work because it is not consistent with fundamental principles of human behavior. The failure of socialism in countries around the world can be traced to one critical defect:

it is a system that ignores INCENTIVES.

Socialism fails for the same reason Democracies fail

The majority vote themselves benefits from the public treasury.

Ay "ism" based on central planning enforced by government

is an anathema to freedom, and in that sense will be a failure, regardless of what economic metrics are measured.

The key to socialism, as Marx

The key to socialism, as Marx described, is to be as vague as possible in your definition of socialism. They will say socialism didn't work because it wasn't done correctly. All the while berating and insulting the capitalist, calling him an elitist, or a panderer to the elitists.

They, of course, will never give you their definition of socialism, because there is most likely a society that tried it their way and failed. The more vague their opinions the harder it will be to disprove, and they always reserve the right to flip-flop positions. They do this on purpose. When dealing with socialists, I have always found it best to try and make them define the aspects of socialism they want, which may be tough, but then they are easy to disprove.

Socialists believe in a socialist utopia, and they will always use the fact that capitalism does not provide a utopia to validate their beliefs, so there must be something better. The fact is anybody who believes in such a thing as a utopia, also probably believes in unicorns and pots of gold at the end of rainbows.

The problem is, socialism is such a wide-held belief. I would venture to say 90+% of people in this world have socialist beliefs in one way or another, but please friends, continue to make them feel as stupid as possible. I know I get great joy out of doing it.

Indeed:

"[...] And this explains how it happens that, although they have a kind of sentimental love for humanity in their hearts, hate flows from their lips.

Each of them reserves all his [her] love for the society that he [she] has dreamed up; but the natural society in which it is our lot to live cannot be destroyed soon enough to suit them, so that from its ruins may rise the New Jerusalem."

Curve ball..

Socialism has lasted eons, longer than any Republic. It may have ebs and flows or even changed hands, but it still dominates much of the world past and present. I would say that socialism is a success for the ptb, otherwise they would simply abandon it.

It's only a minority who oppose it, or try to defeat it.

Yes, and speaking of which, I sincerely believe that more of the brave at work, wealth creating people should learn about - and apply to themselves - the "secret" Generational Wealth Formula of the Elite, precisely :

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

Certainly, I think we could say that

Certainly, I think we could say that (I would agree without much difficulty, anyway).

But be wary that some will argue with you they can always come up with a definition of nature different from yours.

This is a very good article.

This is a very good article. The author makes several great points by comparing socialism to capitalism; this could be useful when trying to convert family and friends to the ideas of liberty.

He writes, "Marxists like to compare a theoretically perfect version of socialism with practical, imperfect capitalism which allows them to claim that socialism is superior to capitalism." This is, pretty much, hitting the nail on the head. Thanks for posting.

Obviously preaching to the choir.

Still, a well-put article.
