Brilliant Geminid Meteor Shower 12/13/12 Possible Appearance of a Yet Un-named Shower Also

Coincidentally, it seems there will be an excellent viewing opportunity tonight for not one, but possibly two meteor showers. Including a yet un-named shower, possibly explaining the recent multiple spectacular meteor reports in the last day.

The Geminid shower should linger until Dec. 16 or so.

With recent reports about a few large meteors making the news before the scheduled peak of the Geminids shower, it might very well be indicative of an excellent show tonight. Even better - viewing conditions are forecast to be virtually ideal due to the current moon phase.

Skywatchers around the world are in for a treat tonight, as the annual Geminid meteor shower is poised to put on a spectacular show.

The Geminids will peak overnight tonight (Dec. 13) with the moon at its new phase. The skies will thus be free of the moon's glare, allowing viewers in rural areas to see perhaps 100 or more meteors per hour, experts say.

A new and as-yet unnamed meteor shower may also make an appearance tonight, ramping up the celestial display even further.

"We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars." - Huck Finn

STARS. It's lovely to live on a raft. We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made or only just happened. Jim he allowed they was made, but I allowed they happened; I judged it would have took too long to make so many. Jim said the moon could 'a' laid them; well, that looked kind of reasonable, so I didn't say nothing against it, because I've seen a frog lay most as many, so of course, it could be done. We used to watch the stars that fell, too, and see them streak down. Jim allowed they'd got spoiled and was hove out of the nest.

Pretty cool!
They didn't just seem to be coming out of one area though. There were 4 of us looking and our total is from all of us.

Not bad

15 minutes, 4 meteors, 1 owl.

Pretty cool

The clouds parted a little while ago, and I saw several of them. Just got finished laying on my back in the driveway until I couldn't stand the cold any more. Still neat to see.

Saw a bunch so far from the Geminid shower

radiating out of Gemini, but only one anywhere near radiating out of Pisces.

Did get to see one big very long track meteor so far though. Could actually see tiny sparkles of debris coming off of it.

Heading back out for a while.

I just finished splitting some firewood for the chimnia

in case it gets cold, and gassed up the 4 wheeler to make a trip to the top of the mountain for a better view if it proves to be as productive as they expect. Going to get the camera and tripod ready now too just in case any really good ones appear.
