Fibonacci in nature - patterns around us
Submitted by kodiakalpha on Fri, 12/14/2012 - 09:53If you think math is not cool (or if you think math is cool) you should watch these videos. Vi Hart is a "recreational mathemusician" that has put together a series of videos that demonstrate mathematics to kids using doodling games. This particular set of videos looks at things in nature that mimic the Fibonacci series.

Part 3:
Thing is, they are really good for adults as well, and even though I consider myself pretty well versed in math, her methods really make me think. I would highly recommend her entire "Doodling in Math Class" series, as well her other videos.

Hey Mike
I am in my Masters Thesis for Architecture and will be demonstrating spatial designs just as you did.
what program did you use for your building renders?
They that give up liberty for security deserve neither.
The Romans used Fibonacci
The Romans used Fibonacci sequences in their constructions too, long before Fibonacci...in fact fibonacci proportions seem to be the most pleasing to the eye and tend to show up naturally in most construction. When other proportions are used, often the structure looks "odd" to us.

Yes
My Masters Thesis is on the Fibionacci sequence in nature and architecture spaces.
The old roman and greek structures followed these principles and now its obvious as to why these buildings are 'sacred'

If you read my post below
If you read my post below that begins about DNA, RN Elliott pioneered Fibonacci ratios in relation to markets. Someone trying to predict markets with Fibonacci retracement is going to likely be somewhat lost without knowing Elliott wave theory, and likewise Elliott wave theory requires knowing Fibonacci ratio.

Thank you for the pointers. Interesting. Looks promising read.
I won't miss to give a try to grok that.

Sorry, the geek in me just can't get enough of this stuff.
Nature itself is a feedback loop with simple rules.
The rules are so simple and start at the subatomic level that every new variable entered as part of the input from the previous run of the equation will end up with patterns emerging. Beautiful patterns that are incredibly complex. But change one small factor somewhere early in the process and the pattern becomes vastly different.... but the method of creating the pattern doesn't change. Pattern formation is woven into the fabric of the universe and that naturally gives rise to more ever more complex patterns. Chaos and pattern are built into nature's most basic rules.
And that applies to any system that includes feedback loops and self organization, like evolution.
Are math patterns in nature evidence of Design?
Jefferson referred to, "the Laws of Nature and Nature's God", as the foundation on which to base his appeal for our independence from England and our duty as sovereigns. When consistent patterns emerge from the structure of DNA to the spirals of galaxies; AND ignorance of such patterns is taught throughout our school systems; then the systematic removal of such profound knowledge appears to have been purposely done to weaken the persuasive appeal to a Higher Law than man's.

The Fibonacci sequence in Tool's Lateralus
This is awesome. It has been a long time since I stumbled upon the Fibonacci. Thanks for posting!
Worth watching. Great rock & roll mathmatics!

Fibonacci numbers are a sequence in which the next number is the sum of the previous two. So what does this have to do with Tool? In 2001, Tool released the album Lateralus which is heavily based on the Fibonacci sequence. The actual song "Lateralus" follows the sequence very closely.
The song begins with the lyrics (numbers denote syllable counts):
1 - "Black"
1 - "Then"
2 - "White are"
3 - "All I see"
5 - "In My Infancy"
8 - "Red and yellow then came to be"
5 - "Reaching out to me"
3 - "Let's me see"
As you can see, it follows the sequence and when it reaches 8, it proceeds to go backwards. The song does eventually break the sequence, but there is a reason behind it:
"Over Thinking, Over Analyzing,
separates my body from my mind,
withering my intuition,
missing opportunities and I must
feed my will to feel my moment
drawing way outside the lines."
Lateralus suggests that we continue to expand our minds; Not to live life in a constant fashion but rather, spiral out and try new things.
"Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come"
Truth is treason in an empire of lies
"We are eternal. All this pain is an illusion."
WHEN IS THE NEW ALBUM COMING!!!???
Sorry.
My favourite band of ALL TIME. I'm a little anxious for new material!

Love these kinda vids
Whats funny to me is in some movies, the "crazy" person who rights on walls, its often these shapes. Wonder if that is true of real "crazy" people. I'm sure its not...just a random thought lol
DNA follows a Fibonacci
DNA follows a Fibonacci pattern, so it follows that all things living would also follow that pattern through a fractal construction.
What's even more interesting is non living matter that maintains a Fibonacci pattern, such as Galaxy spirals; and human emotional nature following a Fibonacci pattern:
"Elliott discovered that the ever-changing path of stock market prices reveals a structural design that in turn reflects a basic harmony found in nature.
The Elliott Wave Principle is a detailed description of how groups of people behave. It reveals that mass psychology swings from pessimism to optimism and back in a natural sequence, creating specific and measurable patterns.
Elliott Wave Principle measures investor psychology, which is the real engine behind the stock markets. When people are optimistic about the future of a given issue, they bid the price up. (and vise versa when pessimistic)
Elliott’s pattern consists of “impulsive waves” and “corrective waves.” An impulsive wave is composed of five subwaves. It moves in the same direction as the trend of the next larger size. A corrective wave is divided into three subwaves. It moves against the trend of the next larger size. (3-5 itself creates a Fibonacci sequence)
Another key to applying the Elliott Wave Principle is Fibonacci ratios. Few investors realize that Fibonacci analysis of the markets was pioneered by R.N. Elliott."

Now I'm really learning new things
I could guess at a lot of the physical manifestations, but I never thought of looking for psychological implications of Fibonacci ratios.
spiral pattern...
Fascinating... I discovered a new species of microscopic plankton with a spiral pattern back in the 80s, see the picture:

It's the cylindrical one. I never considered any mathematical aspects, now will have to go back and count things.
Cool post!
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
Amazing
Funny thing is, I can almost see her doodling those in her math class!
Size...
The size of those fossils may not be apparent, but it's interesting that you can put rougly 100 of them side by side and they would only be 1 millimeter long.
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
Which leads to another thing that fascinates me
Scale. It boggles my mind that we see the same patterns on a gamut from the subatomic level to the galactic level (and probably beyond). Sometimes I wonder if we are particles running around on a proton in an atom that is part of something really, really big.
I don't know why...
But it's so hot when she says all that math stuff...
LMAO
