Only 7% of Detroit Public School 8th Graders Proficient in Reading
Submitted by JO4RP on Thu, 12/13/2012 - 16:53In the public schools in Detroit, Mich., according to the U.S. Department of Education, only 7 percent of the eighth graders are grade-level proficient or better in reading.
Detroit public-school eighth graders do even worse in math than they do in reading, according to the Department of Education. While only 7 percent scored highly enough on the department’s National Assessment of Educational Progress test in 2011 to be rated “proficient” or better in reading, only 4 percent scored highly enough to be rated “proficient” or better in math.

Detroit schools a travesty
I don't know how much can be "hoped" for, but there will be at least some "changes." Just read this backwards - it's on a socialist website. (If they're complaining about it, it's probably a good thing.) The state is taking over responsibility for some of the worst-performing schools. Now, in theory, I'm not for "states" taking education out of the jurisdiction of "local districts." But GIVEN THE STATISTICS, this could be viewed, I guess, as the state taking children from their abusive parents. http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2012/03/detr-m21.html

COINTELPRO ruined Detroit in the 60's with the race riots, and the historical effect has been devastating. All the capital moved out of the city with the capital owners into the suburbs. Thanks to No Child Left Behind, it's worse now than ever before. Detroit is home to a completely underprivileged black and brown demographic which is hurt most by this entire failed system.

700% increase in reading proficiency. We should send them more grants and funds while the metal is hot.

I think
These kids would probably be more proficient in reading and math if instead of public school they went to work at a McDonalds. They would learn to read a menu and how to make change. It would also keep kids safe from the dangerous drug and crime filled public schools.
Detroit
Perhaps it will become the first prison city?
Hope not but that city seems to be in an awful world of hurt.
