I was wrong that 70% of mass shootings are linked to SSRIs. It is 90%

according to this article:

The police can find no evidence that Adam was on medication, because they have become quite adept at not looking for evidence. From the article above:
“I know [Adam Lanza] was on medication and everything, but she homeschooled him at home cause he couldn’t deal with the school classes sometimes,” Louise Tambascio..." The source is named, but the cops can't seem to find her.

Nor can the police find this Uncle, named and quoted in this article:

"...according to Adam’s uncle Jonathan Lanza.

“I’m just in shock right now. It’s like a nightmare. It’s so surreal,” said the uncle, 39.

Adam, he said, was taking the anti-psychotic drug, Fanapt..."

And for some reason, this vital piece of information is left out of more recently released versions of this article.
(Edit: See reply below from damox for interesting twist on this.)

Guns don't kill people, but SSRIs do - they say so right on the label.

SSRIs linked to emotional distress in 85% of "healthy volunteers

Dr Healy was given access to the archives during the Schell case and found what he considered alarming evidence of withdrawal problems. One study showed that as many as 85% of the volunteers - who were company employees with no hint of depression - suffered agitation, abnormal dreams, insomnia and other adverse effects.

From the same article:
"Last week a jury in the US ordered GlaxoSmithKline to pay $6.4m (£4.6m) to the family of Donald Schell, 60, who killed his wife, daughter and granddaughter then himself after two days on Seroxat. Two weeks earlier, an Australian judge ruled that another drug in the class, Sertraline, caused David Hawkins to murder his wife and attempt to kill himself."

And from
" Therefore, the case cited below, where a Canadian judge ruled that a teenage boy murdered his friend due to being on the antidepressant Prozac, "

So, the info in the OP comes from the man who took the time to comb through the research records. His findings have been echoed by the findings in courts in 3 different countries (probably more, I just did a quick search.) The companies are paying out settlements for the damage they have done, but that is not evidence enough for those who love their drug pusher, Pharma.

Judges and government officials are stupid, right?

Except when the agree us!

You know something like 30% of violent crimes are committed by people intoxicated by alcohol?

You know 50% of drug tests show marijuana in the system of violent criminals?

Alcohol and marijuana CAUSE violence, right?

Those big Alcohol PUSHERS! Those ignorant weed smoking zombies! Alcohol and weed interfere with normal brain chemistry!

Let's blame them for violence in our society!

By the way Fishy, did you actually read this article?

"Some other experts say scientific evidence of a link between the latest anti-depressants and homicide is thin.

“I think it got pulled out of a hat, frankly,” said Dr. Umesh Jain, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental health. “You could construct a weak and biologically plausible effect, but you’d have to be pretty convincing in court.”

Studies have established such drugs can increase the risk of young patients having suicidal thoughts. Their tendency to lift inhibition could also release some hostility or violence lurking in a person’s character, said Dr. Jain. Small studies like one he co-authored in 1992 have also suggested that the drugs can trigger short-term mania, especially in bi-polar disorder patients.

There is little or no scientific evidence directly linking the anti-depressants and serious violence or homicide, though, he said."

"About two-thirds of the

"About two-thirds of the alcohol-involved crimes were characterized as simple assaults."

Government does not even track violent crime related to marijauna.

How many mass killing perpetrators have alcohol/cannibis in their blood?

Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental health, an institute of psychiatry??? You think they would say any OTHER??? A psychiatric institution coming out and telling people, "these drugs, that btw we prescribe on a regular basis, are hazardous to our patients mental health, not beneficial"...

People's Awareness Coalition: Deprogramming Sequence

Where is proof of this "90% linkage?"

Where is David Healy coming up with these numbers?

SSRIstories certainly is not proof. That site links a bunch of alleged SSRI associated violent incidences, but then often links to "evidence" that don't actually offer any proof of anything and sometimes don't even mention SSRIs to begin with.

Why is David Healy the only person coming up with these numbers?

All these new articles keep popping up, and all of them are about David Healy and Peter Breggin. And there is still NO PROOF. Just speculation.

And here is one to ponder...

Adam Lanza's mother was a "prepper."
She homeschooled.
She stockpiled guns.

FishyCulture, what are you going to do if strong evidence comes out that Adam Lanza was not medicated at all? Are you just going to throw it under the rug and keep blitzing the forums with different anti-psychiatry articles, or are you going to find out what made him snap even though he wasn't on meds? Are you trying to truth find, or just demonize psychiatry?

Murderers on SSRIs...

...were probably prescribed SSRIs because they were nuts to begin with. SSRIs have actually helped thousands of people who suffer from depression.

This SSRI excuse sounds very much like the "Twinkie defense," i.e. "Sugar made me do it."

No offense but,

These drugs cause mania in a CERTAIN PERCENTAGE of users. Especially teenagers. Nobody said they cause it in EVERY USER. So your personal stories on these drugs would only matter if they did produce mania or suicidal thoughts when there was none before them. If they did not, then you're not apart of the group in question. Not everyone reacts the same to drugs, especially these particular group of drugs.

People have used that excuse in court

"The psychiatric drugs made me do it."

Peter Breggin has gotten people off with murder by testifying that the drugs caused their violent acts.

I've been on SSRIs. I didn't murder anybody or harm anybody. My moral compass was unaffected.

I can attest from personal experience that SSRI makes me less introverted, more assertive and decisive, and most importantly less angry at nuisances. I don't ever get pissed at traffic anymore, for example. In fact, I'm as laid back as I've ever been in my life. And my moral compass was certainly unaffected, having no increased wish to harm any person or feeling any less empathy.

I've never been diagnosed with depression--my doctor prescribed them because I told him I felt that I was too impatient with family members and would regretfully get angry at petty annoyances. SSRI cures grumpy old man syndrome, basically. And for just $4 a month, much cheaper than "alternative" therapies like 5-HTP supplements.

If there are people sensitive to SSRIs, then their doctors should OBSERVE this in followup visits. Prescribers need to take responsibility and titrate each patient's dose correctly, and cease a medication if it is causing adverse outcome.

It would be interesting to see a study that gave candidates for SSRIs either SSRI or placebo, and see whether there were more murders committed by those who received SSRI vs received placebo. I can imagine that possibly SSRI use would increase likelihood of homicide--SSRI can make one less indecisive, into more of an action person. And if the "action" being contemplated is murder or suicide, then one could possibly cease handwringing about it and simply do the deed. But that's pure speculation. I want to see the study that demonstrates correlation between SSRI vs no SSRI and violence vs no violence, and credible explanation of causative effect.

I've used them too at a time when I needed them and not once during that time did it ever cross my mind to do harm to anyone.

I'm surprised at the professing libertarians on Daily Paul who are sounding just like liberals -- SSRIs kill, guns kill, sugar kills, bad diets kill, etc. -- turning the guilty into "victims."

It has nothing to do with libertarianism

It's mostly two factions I've identified- Scientologists and the "natural" health crowd. They have intentions that run far deeper than truth seeking. They use every tragedy to demonize psychotropics and mainstream medicine.

Blaming inanimate things like drugs and guns on complex human behavior is a traditionally liberal cause. They are trying to find simple solutions and scapegoats for extremely complicated problems.

It has gotten to the point where people are so convinced that drugs cause murder that they won't even listen to any counter arguments. I can't tell you how many times I've been accused for being a "drug rep" or "government shill" on the DP. My position has nothing to do with defending government or big Pharma. I'm trying to defend science and reality.

Science gets in the way of agendas

That's the common ground between left-wing and right-wing extremists, science is only useful when it is consistent with the agenda. I'm not anti-natural medicine or anti-conventional medicine. I'm just pro-health and pro-truth. Can't trust people who have no concept of truth, but cherry pick information consistent with their pre-existing biases.

As a psychology major nearing

As a psychology major nearing completion of my neuroscience undergrad degree, I can tell you that there are way too many drugs prescribed without proper oversight in our country. Doctors are all too willing to give out antidepressants, stimulants, and anti-psychotic drugs. Doctors do not want to invest the proper time in diagnosing patients and figuring out real causes to issues. In other cases, parents all too often think their kids need drugs and demand doctors to give it to them as well. Why do we give kids who are 9 or even younger adderall which is simply pill-based amphetamines?

Sure, there are plenty that are helped by the drugs, but I would be interested to see how many are actually harmed by the drugs and I would even be willing to say it is an alarmingly high ratio.

Thank you for posting!

And hang on to your sensibilities! I don't know how you got this far and have not been sucked into Pharma worship, but BLESS YOU and good luck!

"Jonathan Lanza"

There are some questions about this "uncle." Some reports indicate he may be an individual who claims to be a "lawsuit factory," and who apparently has a reputation for "punking" reporters. This individual reportedly also had a tenuous connection to the Aurora shooting. See, for example:

Some forum participants at Democratic Underground recognized Riches' picture in a video in which he claims to be Lanza's uncle:

As a result, several Webmasters and forum Moderators have urged that references to the Riches-Lanza connection be struck pending further investigation. The New York Daily News appears to have edited out the reference in one of its articles, and the Google cache for it has apparently disappeared. Articles from the New York Magazine and Business Insider that mention the "uncle" are still active.

Thus, the "uncle" and his claim about Lanza allegedly being prescribed Fanapt (a controversial psychiatric med) should be considered suspect at this point.

Everything about this entire event appears to be "suspect."
Are the media goons not even verifying the identity of the people they interview?

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

It just doesn't make sense that...

no mainstream media are even talking about the medications Lanza was on. I mean, we KNOW why the MSM doesn't talk about it but wouldn't you think some of their viewers, especially those in the medical professions, would question what medication this kid was on?

It's very simple to my wife and I = crazy person who killed kids. Next step: what medication was he on? Not: what GUNS did he use?

Does that make sense? Is that logical or is that considered "conspiracy thinking"?

I just don't get people.

Lima-1, out.

If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

just ask "who's their daddy?"

Big Pharma buys a lot of ad space. So what do you think they are going to report about these drugs?

"no mainstream media are even talking about the medications Lanza was on."

If the MSM started to tell the truth there would be millions of folks on the streets protesting.
