Should I be buying Gold or Silver right now?
Submitted by ryno.t1985 on Mon, 12/24/2012 - 06:08I have very little gold, which I was trying to diversify in, but should I wait to buy it and keep buying silver instead since silver is relatively cheap now?

This morning,
This morning, Cheaperthandirt.com has just received a new order in of RIO 12 gauge 00 buckshot 2 3/4" shells, cases of 250 shells for $139. That's just over .50 each.

Don't know how much longer they will be in stock. That's the kind of investment I'm talking about.
It is very plausible that
It is very plausible that silver has bottomed a few weeks ago and so has gold.
We may be in the last sideways move before the next rally up.
High up, as fiat currencies are inevitably going to zero anyway.
Anyone who managed to save some fiat cash: now is likely a good or even last time to buy PMs "cheap" if I dare say. When was gold 35/oz again?
On this end, I'm dry for now, sadly. But I will again ASAP, if we're lucky enough.

Yes. I just bought 100 oz and the price went down. So what!
Yes. I just bought 100 oz and the price went down. So what! Its 100 oz of silver. Not very much. I bought 4 oz of gold last month. The price went down. So what! Its hardly anything.
Are you a day trader betting on 12,000 oz in paper, with a view to move not to hold? No. Neither am I.
I'm out to save for the long term. Banks are paying jack squat in interest and holding all wealth in cash is senseless in a QE universe.
So, diversify regularly. Sometimes it'll be up, other times, down. But saving 30% in metals looks like a safe bet over the long term.

Get your long term food
Get your long term food storage first and your ammo and guns then I would keep buying silver until you have around a monster box (500 ounces)then start to save in gold.
I will buy silver and nothing
I will buy silver and nothing else. All I own I have to contain in a 12' x 12' bedroom, and I don't really see myself as a person owning guns. I have no problem with them, I just don't want it. I think if things tank, there will be food on the shelves because almost no one will be able to afford it. I also can only afford to focus on one thing. For me I can only have two things. Rent takes up one of those things. I don't have a car, but will soon need one, so that will take up the other thing and after that I will no longer be able to keep buying silver. Hell, I don't even live on my own. I have to rent a room in a house. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just expressing my situation.
Neither! The stock market is the place to put your money!
Haven't you been paying attention. All time highs, nine days in a row. Man what is it going to take to get you people to understand.
sorry, I don't know why I am feeling especially sarcastic today.

I don't think people got your sarcasm, even though you said you were being sarcastic. I upped your comment because I didn't feel it deserved to be rated negative.

HI-HO SILVER
AWAY!!!! This is a GREAT time to buy silver!
It depends on how you're going to store it
Right now you'll need a pickup bed to store enough silver to equal a shoebox full of gold. That might change, of course, at least in the short term.
siver.
siver.
Listen to Sierra
I did and got in at silver about $12. I knew nothing about PM's at the time. I have thanked him everyday since.

buy silver
it has more upside percentage wise. It is 54-1 to gold and historically has been 35-1
I get the best prices
at a local coin shop. If you have one of those go see them, the guys here in Tennessee beat eBay and anywhere else online by a few dollars without even trying to haggle.

I have a thousand dollars to spare right know. for those who are knowledgable on the subject; BUYING SILVER
Where to buy?
what is the strategy in buying? a bar, a coin, divide the thousand to small amt of silver etc?
Thanks much

It depends
Do you have food, guns, and ammo? If so, you don't need much spending money, and you could just buy generic bullion on the cheap. It's made to invest and hoard. This would be good for a person who is self-sustaining and maybe would need to buy or fix farm equipment.
Are you not a person who has the prepper mentality or simply don't have the resources to do so and will need spending money in a crisis? Buy "junk" silver, rather known as 1964 and earlier dimes, quarters, and half dollars. War nickels (1942-1945) are also good to have. Find a good place to buy American Silver Eagles. They have more bang for the buck than the old 90% silver dollars. Those old dollars cost the same, if not more, than your ASE and they only contain ~75% of the silver. If you want to spend even more, the mint has been minting proof dimes, quarters, and halves since 1992.
I tend to not give two shits about numismatics. I just want the silver, but the market seems to be mainly numismatic these days. Why these people add a $5+/oz. premium on the old worn circulated coins is beyond me. I can buy previous-years ASEs from a local dealer for $2.50 over spot. They don't like to do small quantities, so I am stuck buying at least a roll at a time. I also don't like how they want me to write down my information on the invoice.

I just read something on
I just read something on nickels as well. Just like in the 60s when silver was taken out of our quarters etc. But nickel is still in the nickels... right not 1 nickel is work .0507.... it even got up to .7 cents before the recession. Just like every step of a devaluated currency there are chances to protect yourself... go exchange your paper dollars for actual nickels. It is when bad money kicks good money out... not saying i think nickel is money but if it is worth more than the face value of 5 cents... lets make a profit
oh and yeah buy all the
oh and yeah buy all the precious metals you can afford. Worth* Now*
Is buying junk really worth
Is buying junk really worth it? I have some, but the economists I hear say that Silver Eagles and Maples would be easily tradable than junk.

go half and half. I have a couple real estate properties I own free and clear...everything else I own is silver ...1/2 silver eagles, and 1/2 pre 1965 90% silver.

This might help
Coincidentally, I recently posted something worth reading and watching, I think, on this specific topic, to help yourself make your own opinion :

(note : both sides of the argument are defended; in the linked text vs. in BJF's comments about it)
Personally, I don't stack numismatics at all**, only junk, from US mint, and freshly minted semi-numismatic (from private mints). It's about in 50/50 proportions, for now anyway.
"Your Mileage May Vary" of course. I take it as a very personal decision to make, but it's good to have heard about both sides, first, IMO.
